He is known variously as the 'father of observational astronomy',[4] the 'father of modern physics', 'father of the scientific method' and 'father of modern science', having studied scientific laws of speed and velocity, pendulums, gravity and free fall, the principle of relativity, inertia and, projectile motion

RMMN06RK–. English: Drawing of the first pendulum clock, designed by Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens in 1657. Huygens contracted his clock designs to clockmaker Salomon Coster of The Hague, who actually built the clock. The pendulum had a wider swing than modern clocks, perhaps 80°-100°, due to its verge escapement. The drive force for the clock was provided by the two weights at bottom in an ingenious 'endless rope' mechanism. Huygens first pendulum clock - front view

RMP5XFPH–N/A. The second pendulum clock built by Christiaan Huygens, inventor of the pendulum clock, around 1658. It is from his treatise Horologium Oscillatorium, published 1673, Paris, and it records improvements to the mechanism that Huygens had illustrated in the 1658 publication of his invention, titled Horologium. It is a weight driven clock (the weight chain is removed) with a verge escapement (K,L), with the pendulum (X) suspended on a cord (V). The large metal plate (T) in front of the pendulum cord is the first illustration of Huygens' 'cycloidal cheeks', an attempt to improve accuracy by for

The Yukku-Rhythm Pendulum Clock built in 1982 by Seikosha, was the world's largest mechanical pendulum clock at the time. With a total height of 29 m, a pendulum length of 22.5 m, and a dial length of 7.2 m. A waterwheel powers the clock, and the pendulum completes a swing every 30 seconds. This mechanism gives the clock a distinctive slow-paced rhythm that stands at the origin of the clock's name: yukkuri (slow) rhythm. (Photo by Michael Steinebach/AFLO)

Suppose, now, the pendulum to beabout to pass through the vertical from right to left; at this moment thetooth on the A side passes from the cylindrical arc AA and slides over AC,accelerating the motion of the pendulum in the process. After the A toothhas passed, the escape wheel moves round rapidly under the driving force ofthe clock mechanism, until the B tooth is stopped by the cylindrical arcBB. Against this arc it rests until the pendulum returns from left toright.
