Need for Speed: The Run News
Oh boy.. where do I begin with this one.
I made the mistake of playing the Wii version first. It's.. it's bad. It's a direct port from the 3DS, with missing content. The game plays fine on 3DS, and is actually even fun. But on the Wii?
This game is just press and hold right trigger simulator. The graphics are atrocious. The story is very hard to follow and honestly doesn't even need to exist. The game was incredibly easy, and I beat it in about 3-4 hours.
The core gameplay is fine, and actually a really neat concept. Drive from San Francisco to New York as fast as you can. Drive through the country in an unrepeating, gorgeously landscaped map, with a banging soundtrack and fantastic car sounds. Sounds promising right? Well, where the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions took this in one direction, Firebrand had different ideas.
This version of the game was designed for the 3DS first, and ported to the Wii as an afterthought. You don't get any say in what cars you drive, you don't get any customization options, you only get 6 lanes of flat open highway and erratically spawning cops/monsters that will be more annoying than challenging. There's almost no points in the game where I needed to brake at all, only ease off the throttle momentarily. The other racers don't pose a challenge at ALL. The game was ugly to look at, the gameplay was boring, and the only reason I even finished this game was because it was over in 3 hours.
Looking at this from the 3DS's perspective, this isn't a bad game at all. But the fact the game wasn't altered in any way whatsoever for the big screen is just sad. A handheld game will rarely ever play well on a home console. And considering how good Nitro was.. this was a huge step backwards for NFS. I have heard that EA forced Firebrand to make this game without a lot of time or money, so in that regard, I get it, but that doesn't make up for all it's flaws.
