FALL 

The excitement of beginning, fear of the new, 

wondering what comes next 

The hard thrust of returning responsibility, trying 

to adjust from the 

freedom of Summer 

The cool mornings, hurrying to warmth 

The hot afternoons, sweating in the morning's 

wools 

The early fog that runs away from the sun and 

disappears 

The trees, green to red to brown 

The dead leaves rustling down the sidewalk in 

circles aHd streams and 

then lying still 

WINTER 

The grey days that try to brighten but never 

succeed and are depressed 

The monotonous music of rain leaving puddles 

to soak through your shoes 

and worms on the sidewalk 

to be stepped on 

The wind scattering Fall's leaves away and 

blowing up your sleeves 

and numbing your hands 

The silent snow rendering white beauty to the 

world around it, making the 

ground slippery and soggy 

and forming little white 

men in the yard 

The cold - 

Everything in hibernation: 

the eternal cold that you try to 

avoid even though you know 

you must go out 

SPRING 

From the grey of winter emerge hlue skies and 

green grass and the joy 

of living 

The joy in heing alive, in witnessing the rebirth 

of all that \Vinter killed 

fills your being 

You hear the racket of birds and the clatter of 

people and you rejoice in 

your own vigor

Daniel Aldredge Cannaday 

1899 -1961 

The following is from the dedication of the 1961 BEE HIVE: "A short stocky man, carrying 

his books aloft, whistles his way through the halls of Founders to class. He has just left a desk 

neatly arranged with books, maps of Virginia, and English History test papers. 

"Thi.s man is indeed a familiar figure on the R adford campus. His accomplishments and activities 

during his career here have been many and varied. He is an history scholar .. . an authority 

on the history of Virginia and Radford and a member of the Virginia Government and History 

Textbook Commission ... an author ... a contributor to various magazines of local and 

state interest . . . a church worker, gardener, antique collector, and confirmed bachelor."

Dr. Moffett and friends at Cricket Hearth 

College's First and Only Dean Sees Last Class of Girls

Dr. M'Ledge Moffett is a living institutio n. 

For thousands, sh is an unchanging symbol of campus days at Racliord College. As Dean 

of 'Vomen, Dr. Moffett has guided, directed, and counseled hordes of unsure freshmen and 

overworked seniors from the first days of the college in 1913. 

This week, for the 49th time, she watche d the stream of fresh-faced students pour onto 

the campus as Orientation Week began. These young women in sneakers and pleated skirts 

look little like the first student body at Radford, but like their predecessors, they will seek out 

Dr. Moffett for answers to their questions. They will be the last to benefit by the dean's wit 

and wisdom. 

J n J nne, she will retire. 

Dr. Moffett has been many things to Radford College. In the early years, she directed the 

hume economics department ... teaching her charges the fine points of sewing, cooking, and 

homE' care. She handled purchasing and food service for the 180 students and 15 faculty members. 

In 1920, she became the first woman dean in the state. 

There was little to see at Radford when Dr. Moffett began her career, only Founders Hall, 

some resident houses, and 33 acres of land. Through the past 48 sessions, she has witnessed the 

transformation to a handsome campus with 16 buildings on 70 acres. 

As unofficial historian, she has kept, collected, and written the story of the college's growth 

from a two-year state normal school to today's fully accredited senior college ,vith 1,600 students 

and 100 faculty members. She has seen the part-time graduate school and a nursing program 

for aspirants at Radford and Pulaski hospitals. 

Born in Cincinnati in 1892, Dr. Moffett grew up in Lexington and received her B.S., M.A. 

and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University, where she was a charter member of Kappa Chapter 

of Kappa Delta Pi. Always active in the education field, she was formerly a director of the 

Virginia Education Association, and president of the Virginia Home Economics Association. 

l\'oted for her wit and warmness, Dr. Moffett lives alone in her Racliord home, and keeps 

on the go in her 1961 black sedan. 

Other people and places still fascinate her, too, and last year she toured Europe and the 

~ear East by jet, her favorite type of travel. 

Looking today at her school of girls, Dr. Moffett speaks with noticeable pride. "The college 

is a very definite part of the Radford Community," she says, "and that's not true of all colleges."

The members of the Class of '65 have moved through a trying year of adjustments. They 

have failed in some respects, perhaps, but their successes far outweigh their failures. The 

members have moved together in a closely knit body, each complementing the other. 

In February the Freshman' Dance, "Midnight Under the Sea," and the Freshman Tea afforded 

the beginnings of memories not soon to be forgotten . . . memories which will grow and 

linger in the hearts of the young women of the Class of 1965.

The Panhellenic Council coordinates the four sororities on campus, Its 

purposes are to maintain on a high plane, fraternity life and interfraternity 

relations within our college and to further fine intellectual accomplishments 

and sound scholarship among fraternity members. 

The Council is composed of the president, two representat ~ "es from 

each sorority, and a faculty sponsor. 

The Panhellenic Council sponsors an Open House fm freshmen and transfer 

students and participates in the Campus Carnival.

Banquet, when Joan Winterberger was chosen ASA Sweetheart, our Christmas

indeed we should not forget our legacy party, the unforgettable Founder's Day Banquet, the rush parties with 

"Sleepy Time Tau" and "The Old South" as our themes, sharing with others at Christmas, seeing young and old 

faces alike light up with pleasure, the excitement of the Sweetheart Banquet with one of the new sisters 

chosen "Sweetheart of Alpha Sigma Tau", the annual capin party, and confession night for departing seniors.

"One Heart, One Way" - this, our motto, unites the Sigma Kappas in a 

bond of sincere friendship as we strive to promote high standards of 

achievement - Scholastic, Social, Cultural, and Spiritual. 

During the summer of 1961 two Delta Psi delegates attended the COT's 

National Convention in Denver, Colorado. Sigma Kappa Philanthropies 

include the Maine Sea Coast Mission, the American Greek Farm School, and 

a Gerantology project which is active locally. At our pre-Christmas 

"Animal Stuffing Time" we provided gifts for children at the Main Sea 

Coast Mission. 

We Sigma Kappas never shall forget our "fun-filled" social events of the 

year. Our annual banquet, Date Party, and Christmas Party; Rush Parties, 

"Sigma Kappa Round-Up" and "Sigma Kappas at Cape Cod"; the annual 

Cahin Party in May, and Senior Confessions fill a college calendar with fun 

and Sigma Kappa memories. 

To close the year on a high note, Mrs. Tate, our beloved sponsor, invited 

us all out to her home for a "fun-fest" and feast. And, thus ended

scholarship among its members. Our national service projects 

center around the theme, "Sigma Serves Children".

The Winter Dance, held in January, and the May Day Dance which honors the May Queen and her court,

personal and scholastic standards, cooperation, and personal appearance are stressed by the Cotillion Club.

The objectives of the German Club are high personal standards, cooperation, sociability, and friendliness. The German 

Club sponsors two dances annually, the first is held in the fall and the second, in the winter, is held in 

honor of the Freshman class. The theme of the fall dance "Roman Reverie" brought to our campus the spirit and 

influence of ancient Rome. Warren Covington and the Tommy Dorsey orchestra were featured at this gala affair. 

The Coronation Ball held in March honored the queen and her court. A private dance for members was held 

in the spring. Membership is extended by invitation.

Chi Beta Phi is an honorary fraternity whose purpose is the promotion of interest in science. Iota Sigma Chapter 

sponsors programs dealing with various fields of science and their interrelation. The highlight of this ycar was 

a comprehensive study of radioactivity which was undertaken through individual research and exchange of programs 

by the members. 

Qualifications for membership include an overall B average in all science courses, completion of 20 hours in 

science courses, and a marked interest in science. 

Each year Chi Beta Phi gives a key award to the outstanding student member of the chapter.

and social activities. Its members donate services to the mathematics department as student aids. The social 

activities include an annual banquet for incoming members and a party for freshmen intending to major or minor 

in mathematics. The requirements for membership are a high scholastic average and the completion and

MONOGRAM CLUB 

The aim of the Monogram Club is to foster and contribute to palticipation 

in athletics at Radford College, To be eligible for membership, 

a girl must have earned at least 500 points by participating in athletics. 

After earning a Monogram she is then, upon earning the required 

number of points through game participation, eligible for a star and a crest. 

The club sponsors a play-day Spring Quarter for the high schools 

in the surrounding areas in order to acquaint high school students 

with the opportunities for occupation in recreation and physical education. 

Members play the faculty in volleyball and basketball. During Campus 

Carnival, the Monogram Club cooperates with the other athletic 

organizations in operating a booth.

The Hoofbeats, a dub new to Radford College this year, is open to all students who are enrolled in riding classes. 

This organization strives to promote interest in the art of horsemanship, to encourage athletic exercise, through 

horseback riding, and to instill in its members appreciation of the horse. Some of the club activities include participation 

in area hors(' shows, recreational riding, and the presentation of our own horse show during the Spring Quarter.

national religious organization on campus. The Christmas program, "The Messiah", was presented this year by

and the v.P.I. Glee Club assisting in the production. The Y.W.C.A. members play a prominent part in 

campus activities by their sponsorship of Freshman week, the Thanksgiving program, the Campus Carnival, Religious 

Emphasis Week, the Easter program, and Senior Vespers.

As a Day Student's Club, our purpose is to assist in integrating the day students to college life both academically 

and socially. Our chief aim is to develop the caliber of student who is worthy of acceptance into the college 

community. The only qualificaqon for membership in the club is enrollment as a day student at Radford College. 

To be classified as an active member, the student must participate in two-thirds of the club's activities. 

This year the club has undergone extensive reorganization in both leadership and purpose. The membership has 

greatly increased, and the members have found the activities more profitable than before our reorganization was 

undertaken. 

We are hoping to learn from our motto and, as day students, to make ourselves known on campus as a hardworking 

interested part of the college community. 

The motto of the Radford College Day Student's Club is:
