Loren has been growing orchids for 42 years and hybridizing 

for nearly 40 years. He has made more than 

1,800 hybrids to date, and makes about 70 hybrids 

each year; mostly Cymbidiums with a few Zygopetalums. 

He has been an AOS and CSA Judge for 25 years 

and is the current chair for the AOS Encinitas judging 

center. Loren has received the Cymbidium Society 

Hudlow medal for Cymbidium hybridizing and the 

AOS Award for Excellence in Hybridizing for his high 

color hybridizing. Loren along with his wife, 

Nancy, started Casa de las Orquideas in 1976 and are 

now the leading hybridizers for spotted and high color 

cymbidiums in the US. They have about half an acre 

of orchids grown outdoors under shade cloth, and 

bloom out about 5,000 plants a year. The Batchmans 

have more than 200 seedling crosses and about 50 

different cymbidium clones available from 3" pots to 

blooming size.

President’s Message 

Spring Show Review 

This year “The Art of Orchids” show received 

the “Best Show” award as judged by those 

who attended. Our shows have a reputation 

that generates enthusiasm for orchids, draws 

excellent attendance with superb sales. It is 

an occasion when volunteers work as a team 

and enjoy visiting with guests and society 

members. Our annual shows foster the future 

activities and health of our society. 

Later this month, Saturday the 13 th , Kayo is 

traveling with a bus full of orchid enthusiasts 

to Santa Barbara orchid show. Do give Kayo a 

call soon @310-374-7353 as the seats are filling 

up fast. I can predict that everyone will 

enjoy (as in the past) the trip to the Santa 

Barbara Orchid Show and visits to two large 

orchid growers, Santa Barbara Orchid Estates 

and Cal-Orchid. 

In May we will vote for officers to guide us 

through the 2010-2011 year. This year’s 

board has lead our society in a very pleasant, 

positive direction for the future. If you want 

to consider being a possible candidate, or an 

alternate, do contact Arthur Hazboun or 

any board member. We always want new talents 

that are needed for success and growth. 

Thank you, Don Smith, for donating more of 

Dorothy’s books to our Society. We appreciate 

your thoughtfulness.

What a great Spring Show we had! The 

weather was great, the orchids were beautiful, 

and the show was well attended. Everything 

ran smoothly thanks to the hard work of our 

committee chairs and everyone who came to 

help.

Marilyn Hill and Sue Estes recruited and 

organized the hosts and hostesses. They did a 

great job of keeping an eye on the showroom 

and answering questions the public might have 

about our plants and our society, as well as 

staffing the plant hotel and the front lobby. 

Ron Henry and Larry Bergen organized 

the set-up of the show, which involved bringing 

all of our show supplies from storage and returning 

them. Thank you to everyone who 

showed up to help with this labor-intensive job. 

Bob Streeter was able to get excellent 

judges for our ribbon judging and for CSA and 

AOS judging. Bob and his assistants organized 

our plants for judging and public display. 

Sharon Gage and Ann Rogers worked 

hard to get everyone’s plants registered Friday 

night. 

Eeva Renger was at the Membership and 

Information table to welcome our guests, answer 

questions about our meetings, and to sign 

up new members. Thanks to her efforts we 

now have 15 new family memberships, or 19 

members.

Spring Show continued from p. 2... 

Don Goss, our publicity chair, designed 

the wonderful color poster that was the centerpiece 

of his publicity campaign. Don also 

designed the color ads placed in the local 

newspapers which is our #1 way of advertising 

our show. 

Art Hazboun, our webmaster, was busy 

sending out emails to our “friends” list and to 

other societies. Our website and emails are 

becoming an increasingly important part of 

our advertising campaign. Art was also busy 

at the show calling out the winning numbers 

for our hourly raffle. 

Nick Braemer scheduled the speakers 

who did an excellent job of preparing and 

giving talks on orchid culture. The talks were 

well attended and appreciated by the show 

attendees who were eager to learn how 

to successfully grow orchids. I also want to 

thank our members who volunteered to give 

the talks. 

Bobbie Davison organized the art exhibit 

in the show room. She and her friends 

are students of George Lin and we are 

pleased they displayed their beautiful artwork 

as part of our show. 

As always, the kitchen was a popular 

gathering place for eating and socializing. 

Thanks to Marci Bergen, Kayo Libiano, 

June Brooks and Joann Green for doing 

an excellent job of keeping the kitchen organized 

and to everyone who brought in 

food to feed our hungry volunteers and vendors. 

Our show has become famous among 

the vendors for our warm hospitality and 

good food. 

Thank you to everyone who cleaned up 

their plants and brought them in for judging. 

This was a beautiful and successful show due 

to the efforts of our members.

Australian Terrestrial Culture

Deciduous terrestrials thrive in a shadehouse of 

50-70% shadecloth. In very cold areas, or where 

summer rain is heavy, a plastic roof is usually 

added. Light frost to -2°C does not worry the majority 

of species. All terrestrials like good air movement 

and will not thrive in a stuffy humid atmosphere, especially 

if temperatures are high. Some species prefer 

heavy shade, others full sunlight, but most will 

adapt to a wide range of light intensity. The spring 

flowering species prefer higher light values at flowering 

time. It is essential to keep pots up off the 

ground on benches to deter slugs and snails. I like 

to use plastic pots because they are easier to clean 

and sterilize. Pot size should be neither too big nor 

too small. I recommend 125mm standard pots up to 

175mm squat pots for specimen groupings of 20 

plants 

The potting soil must be kept uniformly moist 

during active growth. If the pots are allowed to dry 

out during the growing season, the plants may become 

dormant. Fertilizers are not necessary, although 

Pterostylis species are very hardy and will 

benefit from weak applications of foliar feed applied 

whilst the leaves are developing. New tubers are 

produced in winter-spring. The colony types form 

several tubers per plant and within a few years the 

pots would become overcrowded if not repotted. I 

recommend annual repotting for these. Some of the 

showier species produce only one new tuber each 

year and have to be propagated from seed. Some of 

these can be made to produce a second tuber by 

carefully twisting off the new season's tuber in September/October 

and replanting the plant with the old 

tuber still attached for another month or two. This 

method works well with Diuris and the rufa group 

greenhoods. 

As the days get hotter and drier in late spring, 

the leaves of terrestrials go yellow and then brown 

and dry. After the leaves have turned brown, the 

pots are allowed to dry out completely to dry up the 

old roots and tubers. Terrestrials must be given their 

own growing area, well away from evergreen plants 

which are watered regularly in summer. The tubers 

may rot if kept wet in hot weather. Seed pods ripen 

before the plants become dormant. Pods are 

checked daily and picked as they start to split open. 

Seed is stored in paper envelopes until autumn. 

In summer the plants are knocked out of the 

pots and the new plump, firm tubers are repotted 

into fresh soil mix. My mix is 45% loam, 50% sand 

and 5% peat moss with a small amount of blood and 

bone fertilizer added. It has a pH of 5.5. Growers in 

other states use coarser mixes containing fine 

gravel and with leaf-litter or buzzer chips in place of 

peat moss. The new tubers are replanted with the 

tops 20-40mm below the soil surface. A thin surface 

mulch of Casuarina or Pinus radiata needles, 

chopped to lengths of 20-50mm, prevents erosion 

and keeps the leaves clean and healthy, as well as 

improving the appearance of the pot. Repotting is 

normally done in November, December or January. 

Each tuber sends up a shoot to the surface in autumn. 

The leaves grow rapidly in late autumn and 

early winter as the rains set in. Seed can be sprinkled 

on top of the pots around mature plants in autumn. 

Protocorms develop in the cool, wet winter 

conditions and seedling leaves appear in spring. 

Seedlings produce tiny tubers by summer. Only the 

largest usually survive the long dry dormancy period 

of 4-6 months. 

Some species set seed unaided but most require 

hand pollination. I use a piece of pine needle 

to transfer pollen from one flower to another of the 

same species. The flower collapses within a few 

days if pollination is successful. Seed pods develop 

rapidly and in springtime can ripen in 4-6 weeks. 

The four commercially important deciduous terrestrial 

genera in cultivation are Caladenia, Diuris, 

Pterostylis and Thelymitra. Each genus has a large 

number of species, although not many Caladenia 

are in general cultivation. I am growing more than 

50 terrestrial hybrids in pots and have a number of 

others in flask. 

We have been very successful with the sun orchids 

or Thelymitra. All the colour of the rainbow, 

including the most beautiful blues, are found in the 

sun orchids. For exhibition work Thelymitra are poor 

subjects because the flowers close at night and will 

not open unless the temperature rises above 22°C. 

They can be made to open on cool sunny days if the 

pot is placed inside a closed car. Thelymitra are all 

spring/summer flowering orchids in southern Australia. 

They are very striking plants, some growing 

more than 50cm tall with up to 20 flowers. The 

smaller species are the easiest to cultivate.

Society hosted an exciting show with vendors 

showcasing their wares on two floors of the 

Westminster Mall and it provided a great opportunity 

for us to advertise for our spring show in 

Torrance. I encourage everyone to volunteer 

their time and plants to help represent SBOS by 

setting up a show table at least once. You may 

be surprised; it just might be your new calling. 

Our display at “Oceans of Orchids” was amazing! 

In just three hours, Dr. Bob Streeter, Marla 

Corey, Bob Fisher, Don Goss, Marla’s sculptor 

friend Debbie, and I whipped together this tabletop 

display for the ‘Oceans of Orchids’ show for 

Valentine’s Day Weekend. I could not have had 

more fun participating in the set-up, and as the 

picture shows, we have some serious talent - 

do we not?

A very pretty Oncidium with exceptionally large flowers was offered by 'Aroma Orchids of Rowland 

Heights'. When I bought mine on Saturday there were no tags on the plant but I was given a name. Don 

Goss did the same and tried to look up the name that evening only to find out that the name was incorrect. 

By Sunday evening, the vendor had secured the correct name which is the one in the heading. Google it in 

and plenty of info about the plant comes up. I saw several of our members walk out with this attractive plant, 

now you can give it the correct name. Ahnuld would have bought one too but he did not make the show,
