Engine and Trims

Four trims make up the 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander lineup, three of which come standard with a front-wheel drivetrain. The lineup is the ES 2.4, SE 2.4, SEL 2.4, and GT 3.0; the first three trims can be upgraded to have Mitsubishi Motors All-Wheel Control (AWC) or Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC), whereas the GT automatically somes with S-AWC. Under the hood of the first three trims is a 2.4-liter MIVEC SOHC 16-valve inline 4-cylinder engine, able to generate 166 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. The Outlander GT is powered by a 3.0-liter MIVEC SOHC 24-valve V6 engine, able to generate 224 horsepower and 215 lb-ft of torque.

Engineering and Handling

Built with MIVEC, also known as the Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control system, the engines have both been optimized for performance and fuel efficiency. The entire lineup comes with an automatic transmission, with the GT paired with a 6-speed electronic automatic transmission and the rest of the lineup hooked up with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) system. Depending on the drivetrain, the fuel economy for the first three trims is 25/30 mpg city/highway on FWD, with a combined mpg of 27 on (S-)AWC. The 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander GT 3.0 has a fuel efficiency of 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.

Exterior Features

One for the ages, the 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander still keeps things pretty simple. Halogen headlights come standard for the first three trims, with LED standard on the GT, optional on the SEL 2.4 – the ES 2.4 and SE 2.4 come with auto-off headlights, but the SEL 2.4 and GT 3.0 come with automatic on/off headlights. Heated exterior mirrors are a lineup classic, as are LED daytime running lights, LED rear combination tail lights, rear privacy glass, and a rear window wiper. All trims ride on 18-inch two-tone alloy wheels. A power glass sunroof is optional for the SE 2.4, standard for the SEL 2.4 and GT 3.0.

Interior Features

Standard across the lineup is a 60/40 split-fold second-row bench, a 50/50 flat-fold third row, dual-zone automatic climate control, an ECO drive mode switch, and surprisingly, heated front seats. All trims but the base come with an 8-way power adjustable driver’s and passenger’s seat, and all trims come with some form of driver information display. All trims but the base come with FAST-Key passive entry.

Cloth upholstery and soft-touch surfaces make up the seating trim for the ES 2.4 and SE 2.4, but the SEL 2.4 and GT 3.0 both come with leather upholstery. A leather-wrapped steering wheel can be found in all trims but the base, and a heated steering wheel is optional for the SEL 2.4, standard for the GT 3.0.

Entertainment

The entire lineup comes with a 7-inch touchscreen, but the ES 2.4 doesn’t come with a smartphone link for Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto compatibility – it does come with Digital HD Radio, though, along with the rest of the lineup that also gets a 3-month subscription so Sirius XM Radio. The first three trims come with a six-speaker system, whereas a Rockford-Fosgate premium 9-speaker system comes with the GT 3.0, optional on the SEL 2.4. Bluetooth wireless technology, steering wheel audio controls, and steering wheel phone controls are a lineup standard (plus voice control for all trims but the base).

Safety Features and Warranty

For the 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander, all trims come with a total of seven airbags around the cabin (including the driver’s knee airbag and advanced dual-stage STS front airbags), three-point seatbelts and head restraints, an anti-lock braking system (ABS), traction and stability control systems, a LATCH child seat anchor system, and anti-theft alarm system and engine immobilizer. The first three trims come with a rearview camera, but a multiview camera is optional on the SEL 2.4, standard on the GT 3.0. Advanced safety systems available consist of forward collision mitigation, lane departure warning, blind-spot warning, automatic high beam headlights, and adaptive cruise control.
