Keeping the tradition of Kanga alive in East Africa

Kanga is a traditional East African garment, featuring a saying with a meaning, which women often wear to convey a certain message. For example: "Luck is like the wind, now it is on my side" ("Bahati ni upepo sasa upo kwangu") or "Things are fine when you love each other" ( "Mkipenda mambo huwa sawa") It's a unique example of "talking clothes.

Together with the Assalam Community Foundation, the TUI Care Foundation is extending the cultural reach of Kanga beyond  "talking clothes" to the walls of local homes, by supporting the "Don't forget" arts and culture project in Zanzibar.

To inspire the preservation of African culture, and to encourage tourists to support local artisans by purchasing their handcrafted products, the TUI Care Foundation invited local residents to paint Kanga pattern murals on homes in the Kizimkazi village.
