Vein problems are one of the most important diseases in our society. An estimated 30% suffer from the consequences. Spider veins are small, visible, superficial, fan-shaped veins and are cosmetically disturbing. The so-called sclerotherapy (sclerotherapy of the veins) can treat the varicose veins efficiently. In addition to improving the aesthetic appearance, the feeling of tension and pressure is also improved. Likewise, possible late consequences of varicose veins such as thromboses and skin ulcers could be prevented.

What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is the elimination of superficial varicose veins by injecting a sclerosing agent. The sclerosing agent is an alcohol (Aethoxysklerol 0.25%, 0.5% and 1%) which irritates the vein.

As a result, the blood flowing back sticks together the treated spider veins, which are replaced by connective tissue over time and almost completely broken down.

What is the course of treatment?

For the treatment, the patient should lie down and a local anaesthetic cream is administered before the treatment. Then the medication is injected into the vessel with a fine cannula. The treatment takes about 15 to 30 minutes. After the treatment, a cotton pad is placed on the injection site.

After sclerotherapy, it is quite normal for small swellings with a feeling of tightness, bruises or reddening of the skin to occur at the injection site. These usually disappear after a few days. Walk up and down for about half an hour immediately after sclerotherapy and do light physical exercise every day (e.g. cycling, walking). Avoid sitting or standing for long periods of time.

Is the treatment painful?

The injection needle is very thin so there is hardly any pain during the treatment. In addition, we will apply an anaesthetic cream before the treatment. Therefore, apart from the puncture in the veins, varicose vein obliteration is largely painless.

How many treatments are necessary?

As a rule, 2 to 3 treatments are sufficient for a satisfactory result.

What are the possible side effects?

Sclerotherapy is a remedy that has been known and successfully used for many years. In general, side effects are very rare. Possible side effects include itching, tightness, infection, skin circulation problems, numbness, swelling or slight bruising, inflammation of the veins or pigment changes. Patients taking blood thinners can also be successfully treated with this method.

Sunbathing too soon after the treatment can promote brownish, melanin-related discolouration. Allergies to the sclerosant are very rare

What do I have to pay attention to after the treatment?

After the treatment you should wear support stockings for 2 weeks to prevent the "stuck" areas from opening up again. Additional compression pads on the sclerosed areas should be left in place for 2 days.

In addition, consistent sun protection with a sun protection factor of 50 and skin care for 3 months after the treatment are necessary. Likewise, strong heat effects such as hot baths or sauna visits should be avoided for at least 2 to 3 weeks after the treatment.

Do treated spider veins come back?

In most cases, sclerotherapy is successful. However, due to a hereditary tendency in the family, new spider veins can form. You can maintain your beautiful legs by regular follow-up sclerotherapy.

Does the health insurance pay for the treatment?

The treatment is usually cosmetic and is not covered by health insurance. Usually 2 to 3 treatments at approx. 250.- to 500.- CHF each are sufficient for a satisfactory result.
