These cute and colorful little balls of rice paste-wrapped ice cream have been taking the world by storm over the last few years – not only because they look adorable, but they also taste delicious, full of intense flavor, and are the most easy-to-eat ice cream out there! But is there more to them than that?

So, to pique your curiosity and fill you in with the facts about Sweety’s mochi ice cream, here are the top 10 things you wish you knew about mochi ice cream – read on to find out!

#1: What is mochi ice cream?

Mochi is a Japanese snack made from a chewy gelatinous rice which has been steamed and pounded until soft and sticky. This can be eaten straight away or made into delicious sweet and savory snacks beloved throughout Japan. Often it is made into daifuku which is mochi wrapped around Japanese sweet red bean paste.

In 1980, the food company Lotte released little balls of vanilla ice cream wrapped in marshmallow, however, they quickly swapped the marshmallow for mochi which was considerably more popular in Japan. Lotte called these little wrapped ice cream balls Yukimi Daifuku which went on to be a hit across the country, resulting in more mochi flavors, and eventually spreading around the world.

#2: What flavors of mochi ice cream are there?

The original Lotte mochi flavors were vanilla, chocolate and matcha, however, nowadays there are hundreds! At Sweety we make mochi ice cream in seven delicious flavors: strawberry, chocolate, mango, coffee, red bean, matcha and, of course, vanilla – a tribute to Lotte’s popular original!

Each of Sweety’s mochi ice creams is full of creamy flavor – the mango and strawberry mochi ice cream is like fresh, cold, juicy fruit, ready to cool you down on a hot day! Chocolate and coffee are sophisticated and bittersweet, matcha is the traditional taste of Japan, while our red bean mochi ice cream is homage to Sweety’s origins – our perfected family recipe!

#3: How do you eat mochi ice cream?

If it’s coming straight from the freezer some people prefer to let it soften for a few minutes to relax the mochi skin to its original chewy state, so we would recommend you leave it for 3-5 minutes to thaw slightly. Then, devour in any way you want! Hold it as you take a few bites, and you’ll see it doesn’t melt all over your hand like an ice cream in a cone!
