Everybody has space for this easy-to-grow and easy-to-bloom mini-Catasetum! Ctsm. kleberianum is very rare in nature, and some suspect that it may be extinct in the wild. It is a small-growing species with attractive flowers sporting a flat bright yellow lip. Ctsm. tigrinum is a showy species with white flowers spotted in light pink, displayed 2-3 times a season in impressive cascades of 20-25 blooms. These mini-Catasetums will be easy to bloom and should produce high flower counts multiple times each season.  We expect white petals and sepals boldly spotted in burgundy with contrasting frilly yellow lips - very cool!

Ctsm. pileatum f. imperiale (Ctsm. pileatum f. imperiale 'Pierre Couret' HCC/AOS x self)
The ‘imperiale’ is a unique color form of pileatum, recognizable by the red pigmentation expressed on the flowers compared to regular color forms, which are light green or cream colored. This cultivar was collected many years ago in Venezuela, and a piece was given to Marcel Lecoufle to be meristemed.  The clonal name 'Pierre Couret' honors one of the founders of the Caracas Orchid Society.  Ctsm. pileatum f. imperiale is only found in a very specific area of Apure state, and some feel that it might represent a natural hybrid.   One theory for the red color is that Ctsm. xtapiriceps (the natural hybrid of pileatum and macrocarpum) was backcrossed to pileatum in nature many times over the years, resulting in the creation of a complex natural hybrid favoring the attributes of pileatum and the red flower color of macrocarpum.  The real nature of this special cultivar may never be known. The prediction for this selfing will be broad pileatum-shaped lips in colors that tend toward a mixture of solid to blotched red with a few pinks or even green. The cultivar ‘Pierre Couret' is very uncommon in cultivation, and this is a rare opportunity to own a piece of pileatum history and the king of Catasetums!

Ctsm. pileatum f. imperiale 'Pierre Couret' is a unique red color form of pileatum. The pileatum f. album is outstanding, receiving an FCC/AOS for its huge, pure white flowers. It's also the most floriferous cultivar in my collection, and a single bulb can produce two inflorescences holding as many as 22 white flowers each. This pairing was made to create a range of flower colors in shades of pink and coral, possible with a few in white and red. Each one will be a unique masterpiece!

Here is a really special and rare offering. This seldom-seen Clowesia species has a name that is a bit complicated to pronounce: thylaciochila (thigh-lass-see-OH-kye-lah).  It is native to Mexico, growing along the Pacific coast in the states of Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero and Oaxaca. I spent years trying to source this species, but it was elusive. Finally, I was lucky enough to locate some plants, and they have grown into impressive specimens. Flowers are produced in late June with the developing new growths, making them the first Clowesia species of the year to flower.  Flower production is incredible: hundreds of light green flowers with darker green stripes cascade over and cover all sides of the hanging baskets. And the fragrance is amazing! The whole growing area becomes infused with it. Check out this PICTURE of a full-grown plant. Very rare and not to be missed!

Okay, we all know about Mormodes, but how many have you grown lately? We have been diligently working on developing advanced Mormodes crosses, and they are now coming of age. Flower colors are without compare, and the ease of culture now rivals most Catasetums. Morm. Gareth Wills (Exotic Treat x Nitty-Gritty) has bright yellow flowers with bold dark red spots, and plants produce 2-3 inflorescences on leafless bulbs. Morm. Aftermath (Mark Mills x Midnight Hooker) was a breakthrough in flower color. Just take a look at this picture of 'Neon Blaster’ . I hadn’t seen color like this before. Here we are looking for intense yellow/orange color with bold red spotting on 2-3 upright inflorescences produced from leafless plants.

Morm. Aftermath (Mark Mills x Midnight Hooker) was a breakthrough in flower color - an intense neon orange spotted with dark burgundy. Morm. andreettae has an eye-catching coral pink flower color, and the strong upright inflorescences do a great job displaying 12-16 nicely-arranged flowers well above the foliage. The expectation here is to produce Mormodes with long, sturdy, upright inflorescences and flowers in a range of intense colors. It will be very interesting to see how the coral-pink floral tones of andreettae mix with the neon color of Aftermath. This cross will lead to never-before-seen flower color combinations plus improvements in inflorescence length.

In this remake of Rebecca Northen, we have used the best possible parents. Grace Dunn (warczewitzii x rosea) ‘Live Oak’ produces 15 or more fragrant pink and green flowers with cute frilly lips on 3-4 pendulous inflorescences from leafless bulbs in mid-winter. Cl. rosea ‘Fantastic Andy’ is truly an outstanding cultivar, exhibiting the best quality flowers I have seen on this species. It blooms profusely in early winter on deciduous bulbs with 3-4 pendulous inflorescences carrying 15 or more soft pink flowers with frilly lips. These will quite possibly be the best Rebecca Northens ever produced. Flowers will be carried on multiple pendent inflorescences and will be frilly and pink with a marvelous citrus fragrance.

This Brazilian species is not often available in the USA. My original plants were imported years ago from Bela Vista Orchids. Interestingly, they flowered in a wide range of colors, including red, amber, yellow, green and white - quite amazing! Ctsm. spitzii is one of the last Catasetum species of the year to flower, and it does so with an impressive display. Plants easily produce multiple arching inflorescences carrying many well-displayed flowers. Both of these selected cultivars are very floriferous, and as I write this, they are both in full bloom with 2 spikes each totaling over 120 flowers!!!  This is an underappreciated Catasetum species that deserves to be grown by all serious collectors.

This is one of my favorite species, and I'm always happy when these plants bloom, which they do 2-3 times a season! Inflorescences can be up to 3' long, holding 25+ well-arranged flowers. Truly outstanding!!!  A bit of history: a while back I made a sibling cross of saccatum ('SVO' x 'SVO II'), and the best plant from that cross was named 'Dark Wonder' for its exceptionally dark rich burgundy petals and sepals. The cultivar 'Brooklyn Botanic Garden' received a First Class Certificate (FCC), the highest accolade for flower quality given by the American Orchid Society (AOS). This saccatum is truly outstanding and blooms with 25 flowers nearly 6” across on an inflorescence that is 3' long!  As if that weren't enough, I have seen this plant flower 4 times in a single season!!!  This pairing might very well produce the best group of saccatum yet seen; it certainly has the genetic potential!

This cross is between two unusually nice Ctsm. tenebrosum, the best I have seen. The nearly black color of the petals and sepals creates a bold contrast with the chartreuse lip. This species is an early spring bloomer and is often the first to flower each year, kicking off the blooming season. The cultivar ‘Jim’ blooms with 24-28 flowers per inflorescence. Usually, 2 inflorescences are produced simultaneously, holding 50+ flowers at a time!  ‘Ed Wise #2’ has impeccable flower shape. Its wide petals really make it shapely and showy, and it is one of the grandparents in the breeding of Fdk. After Dark. This is one of the “must have” Catasetum species.

Everyone agrees that the flowers of 'Rolando Foo' are very nice! The richness of color and bright yellow center make for a memorable combination. Crossing Ctsm. Jumbo Pearl (Ctsm. Penang x Ctsm. tenebrosum) back to arguably one of the best Ctsm. tenebrosum will reinforce the petal and sepal color, allow for much of the yellow in the lip to predominate and make the offspring early season bloomers while still allowing for mid and late season flowering. This is our first cross with Jumbo Pearl ‘Rolando Foo’, and I can’t wait to see how these will bloom!

Although Cyrtopodium punctatum is not a Catasetum, it is a distant relative. Both belong to the tribe Cymbidieae and share many of the same cultural requirements, making them excellent comparison plants. Cyrtopodium punctatum has a wide natural distribution from southern Florida, through Caribbean, along eastern Mexico, and all the way down to Argentina! These robust growing plants produce many upright branched spikes with 100’s of yellow, orange and brown flowers. Mature plants stand a little over 2’ tall. This grex was a breakthrough in mini-Catasetum breeding. Besides having lots of colorful flowers, the plants are robust and bloom 2-3 times a season. The parents of Dentigrianum are Ctsm. (denticulatum x Ctsm. tigrinum).  This is a sibling cross of two exceptional cultivars, each with outstanding qualities. ‘SVO Excellence’ produces a very high flower count, and ‘SVO Very Nice’ has the best flower shape yet seen. The hope is that the best qualities of each will combine to give us the “next level” of quality Dentigrianum.

As some of you long-time Catasetum growers know, for years I’ve been obsessed with frilly-lipped flowers, and that’s exactly what this cross is about. Ctsm. John C. Burchett (João Stivalli x Susan Fuchs) is a spectacular hybrid. The huge, flat, nearly black lip of the cultivar ‘Ursa Major’ really impressed the judges, and it received a First Class Certificate (FCC/AOS) for Ryan Kowalczyk. It blooms 2-3 times a year, and female flowers are often the first to be produced each season. Thus, this plant has been used frequently as a capsule parent. Millie’s Frilly Dragon (Frilly Doris x Voodoo Dragon) was such a fun cross. The flowers of ‘Chocolate Frills’ look just like the name: excellent frilly lips in a rich chocolate color. The plant is a robust grower and produces many flowers several times a year. These flowers will be shapely with broad lips and frills, colored richly in brown and burgundy.

This cross is bringing together two of the best mini-Catasetum hybrids produced, Melana Davison (denticulatum x Penang) and Karen Armstrong (Susan Fuchs x denticulatum).  ‘Hoorah’ is particularly beautiful, and the yellow base color of the lip and red markings throughout make it unique. ‘Very Nice’ has boldly marked flowers with prominent yellow, burgundy and chestnut colors - another stunning cultivar. We are expecting many good qualities from this cross: quick maturing plants that bloom throughout the growing season with 15+ shapely flowers on arching inflorescences in a range of memorable colors, primarily yellows and reds.

Ctsm. Dentigrianum (denticulatum x tigrinum) was a breakthrough in mini-Catasetum breeding. What this primary hybrid lacks in genealogical complexity it makes up for in charm, with beautifully-formed flowers in white, uniformly spotted with burgundy, and a soft yellow lip with a dentate margin. Chuck Taylor (denticulatum x Portagee Star) was a match made in heaven, and this cross resulted in many great plants. ‘SVO Sunshine’ has the most beautiful yellow lip and has been a solid parent, giving rise to several nice crosses so far. Since both parents are mini-Catasetums, the plants will stay under 6” tall, produce 15 or more flowers per inflorescence, and bloom 2-3 times a season. Every once in a while, a cross is so impressive that you want to re-make it as soon as possible. This remake capitalizes on the exceptional qualities of ‘Dark Spots’, which blooms with as many as 42 flowers, and ‘Very Wide Petals’. with the best petal shape imaginable, to assure exceptional qualities in the offspring. These will have spectacular flowers on miniature plants that bloom 2-3 times a season. Ctsm. Chuck Taylor (denticulatum x Portagee Star) is a high-quality mini-Catasetum cross that produced many fine cultivars. ‘Sunshine’ is one of our favorites, as it has the most beautiful yellow lip, and it’s proving to be a good parent. Daniela Isabel (Portagee Star x Karen Armstrong) has produced several awarded plants. This cross is noted for its flower color and free-flowering habit. Both of the parents used in this cross share a common ancestor, Ctsm. Portagee Star, which is expected to contribute color and large flower size. The remainder of the genetic makeup is predominantly influenced by denticulatum, which will keep plant size small and add burgundy spotting to the flowers. This a very interesting combination, producing beautiful spotted flowers with red and yellow lips on small-growing plants.

John C. Burchett (Ctsm. João Stivalli x Ctsm. Susan Fuchs) is one of the most impressive of the modern pileatum-based Catasetum hybrids. It has unusually rich burgundy color and a huge, flat, nearly-black lip. The FCC/AOS awarded to ‘Ursa Major’ is a testament to its amazingly high quality. Karen Armstrong (Susan Fuchs x denticulatum) ‘Wonder Spots’ has boldly marked flowers with prominent yellow, burgundy and chestnut colors. It’s a good grower and is frequently in flower. We are hoping for large flowers in darkest burgundy with big broad lips spotted in yellow. The plants will be like large mini-Catasetums and should bloom 2-3 times a year.

Solid black Catasetum breeding has been elusive, but Dark Tale (Donna Wise x Louise Clarke) ‘Black Surprise’ has given us hope. The flowers of ‘Black Surprise’ are so dark that we almost missed seeing them among the shadows created by the leaves. Ctsm. Ryan Harrington (Ctsm. tenebrosum x Ctsm. denticulatum) has been an excellent hybrid, with ‘Best of the Best’ edging out all the others with its dark color and remarkable flowering abilities. There is tremendous potential here for solid black Catasetum breeding. This grex is 44% tenebrosum, 25% denticulatum,19% expansum and 12% pileatum. Will this be the perfect genetic combination?

The morrenianum variety is a rare color form of fimbriatum. The flowers are a solid dark purple with the frilly (fimbriated) lip that defines this species. The male flowers are relatively long-lived, up to 14 days and sometimes more. This is another species that we’ve been trying to propagate for many years, but we needed to wait for the parent plant to bloom with both flower sexes simultaneously. When that finally happened, my first thought was to make a selfing. This plant has been in my collection for years and is finally available for the first time!

Modern Cycnoches hybrids are simply outstanding, with impressive flowers and a robust growth habit. Here we are breeding for spots. Maren Gleason (warscewiczii x Martha Clarke) has flowers peppered in burgundy on a yellow background. Richard Brandon (warscewiczii x Jean E. Monnier) has proven itself as an important breeder of quality hybrids. The awarded 'SVO II’ has bold dark burgundy spots over a bronze-green base color. Both parents have dominant shield-shaped lips from the warscewiczii in their lineage. This cross will have spots, spots and more spots in burgundy over a lighter-colored background. You will be impressed with the flower shape, ease of growth, and ability to carry 14-16 impressive swan-shaped flowers per stem.

These produce large flowers on small, easy-to-bloom plants, with really nice flower color and shape. ‘SVO Spotted Beauty’ has amazing flower quality, and the spotting is fantastic! Crossing it to the small-growing Dentigrianum will keep plant size down and assure boldly spotted flowers 2-3 times a season. This is the first to bloom PICTURE of grex.  We are now into the 3rd generation of mini-Catasetum breeding, and the quality of these is new hybrids is amazing.

Ctsm. Dentigrianum (denticulatum x tigrinum) 'SVO Excellence’ is an amazing plant with a great flower! The plant is a strong bloomer as well, flowering multiple times a season. Ctsm. Portagee Star (Ctsm. pileatum x Ctsm. Black Knight) is comprised of just three species: pileatum, expansum and tenebrosum. The flower quality is surprisingly nice: the shape is full, the lip is flat, and the color is an attractive light yellow with a blush of red. These will be like super improved Ctsm. Chuck Taylor with larger flowers, fuller shape and pronounced dentate lips. Really wonderful mini-Catasetums.

A prolific bloomer, it produces large, light-yellow flowers with red spots and a huge lip. The flowers of Memoria Raúl Mortera Penedo (Karen Armstrong x denticulatum) look like denticulatum on steroids, with flowers that are larger, fuller and darker. I am really looking forward to seeing the outcome of this mating! I expect large flowers with flat lips, densely spotted in red burgundy on a lighter background. These mini-Catasetums will be easy to grow and flower. Expect blooms throughout the growing season.

The common name for Cycnoches is the swan orchid, and we know how rare black swans are. What if a Cycnoches had black flowers?  For some time now, we have been breeding toward that goal, and I even have the name picked out: Cycnoches Black Swan. There’s just one problem: so far, none have been black. Here we are breeding for the darkest color yet using Cyc. Richard Brandon (warscewiczii x Jean E. Monnier) ‘SVO II’, which has dense spotting on very large flowers from robust-growing easy-to-bloom plants, and Cyc. Dark Swan (Cyc. Richard Brandon x Cyc. Chloroge) ‘Black Swan’ with flowers in an unbelievably dark color never seen prevously in Cycnoches. You can guess what I am expecting. Will some of these be black? The anticipation while waiting to see these flower is killing me!

Monnier) produced robust-growing plants that are easy to bloom with high-quality well-shaped flowers. ‘SVO II’ is a most outstanding cultivar with spotting on very large flowers, and 'Xtra Wide Petals' had the widest and fullest petals - truly amazing. In sibling crosses like this, selecting individual plants with desirable attributes will bring out the genetic variation that a cross can express. These will vary in flower color and shape, but all will be nice and some will be exceptional. I’m a big fan of this cross, which I believe will set a new standard of quality in Cycnoches.

When a Clowesia (Cl.) is crossed with a Catasetum (Ctsm.), the hybrid genus Clowesetum (Clo.) is created. The flowers become ‘perfect’ (bearing both male and female structures), and bloom longevity is extended to 3-4 weeks or more. Jumbo Lace (Cl. Rebecca Northen x Ctsm. fimbriatum) is a very attractive yellow with fine red spotting and a fimbriated lip. It is very floriferous, regularly producing 3 inflorescences per growth. The well-known Susan Fuchs has flowers with an impressive yellow background color and bold burgundy red spots. It is a reliable grower, bloomer and breeder. This cross will produce big, bright yellow flowers with bold red spotting. The flower longevity will exceed 3 weeks, and plants will have the tendency to produce multiple inflorescences at each flowering. Fredclarkeara breeding has revolutionized dark colored Catasetinae flowers. We realized that developing new colors in Fredclarkearas (Fdk.) was an opportunity to make some outstanding new hybrids. One of the early successful new color crosses was Fdk. Upgrade (Mo. Jumbo World x Ctsm. spitzii). We were very happy with the results: the cultivar ‘Yellow Gold’ has shapely yellow-green petals and sepals and a broad flat waxy yellow lip. The cultivar name of Ctsm. pileatum ‘Oro Verde’ translates to ‘Green Gold’ and is very descriptive of the flower color. Each of the beautiful flowers has light green segments and a golden yellow center to the lip. The flowers are also large, measuring over 4.5” across, and the 12 blooms per inflorescence make an impressive display. This new Fdk. breeding will capitalize on the high flower count and yellow and green colors of both parents, and the pileatum will contribute its dominance for flower and lip size. This is a very promising cross - highly recommended.

The tried-and-true Frilly Doris (Doris's Choice x Dona Marie) imparts good flower form, fimbriate lips and well-arranged flowers. It’s a vigorous grower that blooms reliably 3-4 times a season with 23-26 flowers per inflorescence. Earlier Ctsm. tigrinum crosses have shown that this species exerts a positive influence on petal width, and this desirable characteristic creates a full flower shape. These will be mini-Catasetums, as the plant habit from tigrinum will reduce plant size. High flower count, spotted flowers and frilly lips - what more could you want?

Melana Davison (Ctsm. Penang x Ctsm. denticulatum) is a landmark hybrid, reducing plant size while maintaining excellent flower size, shape, color, and count. The cultivar 'Foxtail' had a particularly high flower count and an impressive red color. Ctsm. Dentigrianum (denticulatum x tigrinum) is a breakthrough in mini-Catasetum breeding, with its beautifully-formed flowers in white, uniformly spotted with burgundy, and a soft yellow dentate lip. These will be mini-Catasetums, with plants under 6” tall, and will easily bloom 2-3 times a season. I am expecting flowers of excellent shape in colors ranging from red to densely spotted in burgundy.

Grace Dunn (warczewitzii x rosea) has been a productive parent, with its lemon-scented pink and green frilly-lipped blooms produced abundantly from pendulous inflorescences. Ctsm. pileatum ‘Oro Verde’ produces very beautiful flowers. Each bloom has light green segments and a golden yellow center to the lip. The large flowers measure over 4.5” across and, with 12 blooms per inflorescence, a flowering plant produces an impressive display. These will flower in December, with long-lived, shapely flowers in a range of colors from white to light green, light yellow, and soft pink. All will have broad frilly lips.

This Clowesetum will produce ‘perfect’ flowers with 3 to 4 week longevity. Cl. Rebecca Northen ‘Grapefruit Pink’ produces 20 or more frilly pink flowers on 3-4 pendulous inflorescences from leafless bulbs in mid-winter. Ctsm. spitzii ‘SVO Gold’ has solid bright yellow flowers with strong inflorescences carrying 25-30 each. The lip of spitzii is thick and solid - almost like it's formed from yellow wax – a valuable characteristic in flattening out the lips of its progeny. I really like Clowesetums! The flowers look like Catasetums, but instead of flowering throughout the year, they bloom all at once in early winter with 2-3 inflorescences per mature bulb. The vigorous plants will produce fragrant, shapely bright yellow flowers on long pendulous inflorescences. The amazing flowers PICTURE of this Clo. How cool is this? It’s a mini-Clowesetum! Cl. Grace Dunn (Cl. rosea x Cl. warczewitzii) is a small growing plant that blooms in mid-winter on leafless bulbs with multiple pendent inflorescences of 15 or more pink and green flowers with cute frilly lips and a wonderful citrus fragrance. Ctsm. schunkei is a rare Peruvian species. Plants are 6” tall and bloom with cascading inflorescences of many small flowers. The color is green with dense dark spots, and the yellow lip has comb-like fingers along the margin - pretty cool. This is a totally new type of breeding. We are confident that plants will be small, staying under 6” tall, and bloom in winter. Flower color is a bit trickier to predict. I think the flowers will be mostly in shades of green spotted with burgundy, and the lips will be yellow with pronounced fimbriation around the margins. This cross has good potential to be unique and desirable.

Charles Fouquette (Ctsm. expansum x Ctsm. osculatum).  Both of parents produce flowers with lots of yellow coloring on their lips and burgundy-colored petals and sepals.  It’s a novelty hybrid that piqued my interest.
