In his work, Maleonn has always kept a close eye on ancient Chinese history. In older series like the Second Hand Tang Poems¸ he brings to life ancient poems, including their translations, because too many youths o longer know the classic stories. For him, “…especially artist need to know and understand their own traditions and history, as they are the one’s that need to comment, react, continue and/or try to alter it. Without history, there can be no future”
The presented work is from a new series he created in 2017 in which he re-enacts images that according to him all Chinese people should know. In this case the lonely shepherd in the barren landscape using his Imperial staff to herd the sheep is Su Wu, the ambassador of the Han dynasty imprisoned and sanctioned for almost 20 years. In those 20 years he never wavered in his loyalty to emperor Wu who had trusted him and his family to represent him. The story of Su Wu is one of the most important stories about loyalty and determination.
Maleonn, whose real name Ma Liang, was born in 1972 in Shanghai, where he lives and works. Born into an artistic family, he attended art school from a young age. After graduating in Arts from the University of Shanghai, he worked as director of advertising. In that way, he developed his technique as photographer and videographer, important elements of his work.
