    Default Some Aparri-type Phalaenopsis equestris...

from the equestris guy. I am waiting for the rosea or Ilocos-type to open.

Not the most colorful, but this last one is my favorite.

    Default varieties of Phalaenopsis equestris

    Tim,

Most Phalaenopsis equestris varieties came from the Philippines rather than Taiwan.

The rosea variety is also known as the Ilocos type because they were first gathered from the Ilocos region, in northern Philippines. This one has sepals and petals of a light pink-purple color all throughout. My impression is that this variety is also most plentiful in that region. Plant and blooms a bit smaller than the other varieties, but this variety has the most tendency to have the most blooms per spike.

Contiguous to the Ilocos region is the big town of Aparri, at the mouth of the longest river in the Philippines, the Cagayan River. The appelation Aparri-type or leucaspis is what you see above, with bright yellow to orange to pink lips with some suffusion of purple-pink to the sepals and petals.

The leucothante variety has fewer blooms but they are a bit larger, and the sepals and petals are more white. Also known as the Tagalog type. This is perhaps exemplified by the last flower above.

There is also an alba form and a cyanochilus form.
