Rhone set several new personal bests during the season. He ran a time of 14 minutes, 58 seconds on Mt. SAC’s hilly 2.93-mile course.  He also ran 14:17 over 3 miles and broke the 15-minute barrier in the 5k with 14:59 at the Nike Portland XC Invite in September. His time in the state meet was 15:13.

Rhone, who has scholarship offers from Cal, Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton, credits his mindset and training for helping him improve by more than 60 seconds compared to his junior season.

“I took everything really serious this year,” Rhone explained. “I wasn’t really trying to joke around. I left the jokes for after practice.”

Rhone was known for his blistering kick at the end of the race, where he often passed several runners, sometimes just a mere step or two before the finish line.

“I just know whoever is close to me and in front of me I’m going to catch them,” Rhone said. “That’s just my goal all the time. I always know I have that kick and I know I can finish the race strong.”

Rhone said he’s looking forward to his senior track season this spring. His goal is to have a time of 1:53 in the 800, 4:08 in the mile, 8:53 in the 3,200 and a 52 in the 400.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Tim McIntosh, St. John Bosco

St. John Bosco coach Tim McIntosh is the Press-Telegram boys cross country coach of the year after leading the Braves to a fourth-place finish in the Division IV race at the CIF State Championships.

Like many teams, Bosco faced adversity this season with injuries and illnesses. However, McIntosh credits his runners for their perseverance and selflessness.

“Don’t run for you, run for each other,” McIntosh said. “When you have someone counting on you, you find another will… That sense of togetherness, it’s one race and we all go together. I think that’s what carried us through.”

This is the sixth time, McIntosh, a 1979 Bosco alum, has been selected as the Press-Telegram’s cross country coach of the Year.
