Morphological Characteristics
Cells solitary, long spindle shape, straight, curved or sinuate, ends tapering in to seta shape, straight or curved. The chloroplast is parietal, fine, in the middle of cell is curved. In young cells is one pyrenoid.

- Cell Length: from 64 to 200 µm
- Cell Width: from 3 to 28 µm
- Length without hyaline ends: from 11 to 68 µm
Distribution
Planktonic in tropical and temperate freshwaters in variety of habitats; genus essentially cosmopolitan although some species endemic.
Notes
Usually mixed with Monoraphidium.
