The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's free plant exhibition, "Enchanting Orchids" is in its final days at PHS's McLean Library. The stunning plants, grown by Flower Show experts, will warm up a cold winter's day and get you in the mood for the 2012 Philadelphia International Flower Show, entitled "Hawaii: Islands of Aloha," where orchid displays will be center stage. Join PHS for two final events before the exhibit comes to a close.

The exhibit itself is open every day this week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"Waking up in Eden" evening lecture -- Thursday, 6 p.m., PHS Auditorium

Begin your Hawaiian Flower Show reveries early with an evening lecture by former Philadelphia Inquirer writer Lucinda Fleeson about her adventure living and working at the National Tropical Botanical Garden on Hawaii's island of Kauai. In her book, "Waking up in Eden," Fleeson describes how native plants are dying at an astonishing rate—Hawaii is called the extinction capital of the world—and how invasive species (plants, animals, and humans) have imperiled this Garden of Eden. This lecture will coincide with the closing event of our orchid exhibit in the McLean Library. Registration will begin in the library at 5 p.m., and a wine and cheese reception and book signing will follow the lecture. Fee: $10 members, $20 non members.

Tropical Plant Sale -- Thursday, 9 a.m.-8 p.m., McLean Library

Stop by the Enchanting Orchids exhibit to purchase gorgeous plants for your home. Choose from a selection of amazing orchids and tropical plants including anthurium, dracaena, foliage plants, and even mini-pineapples. Tropicals make great houseplants and will brighten up any room in your house this winter. Plants starting at $10 and up.
