Found from Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama and CLM Colombia in premontane and lower montane rain forests on shady tree trunks as a medium sized, hot to cool growing epiphyte at elevations of 800 to 1500 meters with clustered, linear, strongly compressed pseudobulbs enveloped below by a few non-foliaceous, sheaths and carrying a single, apical, lanceolate to elliptic-lanceolate, coriaceous, acute, gradually narrowing below into the conduplicate base leaf that blooms in the spring on a 3 to 4, basal, arching, to pendant, short to 2" [to 5 cm] , single flowered inflorescence arising on a mature pseudobulb with highly fragrant flowers.

Similar to T punicea but it differs in the elongate, narrow pseuduodbulbs, larger flowers, darker reddish brown sepals and petals, a shorter tubular base of the lip, lip much wider across the lateral lobes than across the midlobe and a slightly twisted, column apex.
