Common Name The Malipo Paphiopedilum [Area in China] - In China Ma Li Po Dou Lan

Flower Size 3 to 4" [7.5 to 10 cm]

Found in southern China and Vietnam, is found in leaf litter on limestone rocks in mixed semi-decidous to open deciduous, broadleafed mountainous cloud forests, or on steep limestone cliffs or at the summits of limestone mountains with mosses and ferns at elevations of 450 to 1450 meters in partial shade as a small sized, warm to cool growing lithophyte or terrestrial with a short rhizome giving rise to 4 to 6, distichous, coriaceous, oblong or narrowly elliptic, acute to obtuse at the asymetric apex, dark and light green mottled dark green, heavily purple spotted and keeled beneath, leathery leaves that blooms in the winter and spring on a suberect, green spotted with purple, white hirsute, 12" to 20" [30 to 50 cm] long, single [rarely 2] flowered, inflorescence with a narrowly ovate-lanceolate, greenish marked with purple, conduplicate, shorter than the ovary floral bract carrying a large flower with a nice [apple-raspberry] scent

This species likes water more than other paphs and was discovered as recently as 1984.

Similar to P jackii but it differs in a different pattern above and in the pale purple beneath the leaves, the light floral scent instead of raspberry and most important the different staminode with its truncated diamond shape, more elongated, and squared off at the base and lacks the deep groove at the apex.
