Description

This line of breeding was made by our friend James Fang of Hilo Orchid Farm and I think this will soon set a new standard for the Paph. rothschildianum .

'New Balance', is a very fine clone with good form and dark color. 'New Horizon' is one of the newest and best clones of Paph. rothschildianum , awarded a First Class Certificate by the American Orchid Society (FCC/AOS) in recent years. FCC is the highest flower quality award given by the AOS. paph. rothschildianum 'New Horizon' FCC/AOS, at the time of award had four flowers on one 53-cm inflorescence; sepals chartreuse striped dark mahogany; petals chartreuse stippled dark mahogany; pouch cream colored overlaid mahogany; substance firm; waxy texture.

paph. rothschildianum is called the “King of Paphs.” Its impressive, large, stately flowers always draw attention at orchid shows. They can be slow to reach blooming size as seedlings, but once they reach maturity they flower reliably every year. As the plants get larger the flowers become even more impressive.

Paphs detest soggy growing medium; pot in well-draining media. Grow them in bright light and warm temperature with high humidity and good air circulation. As with all Paphs, its roots are sensitive to salt buildup from excess fertilizer which causes leaf tips to turn brown. It is a good practice to flush the medium with fresh, clean water once a month and repot Paphs in fresh media every year. This plant reportedly grows well outdoors in South Florida. Can be grown on a bright windsowsill or under lights. New technology advancements in LED lighting now make it possible to bloom and enjoy these plants in the home without a greenhouse.

This new strain is vigorous and fast maturing. It takes 5 – 6 years to bloom out of flask versus 7 – 8 years compared to the older generation. The impressive, large, striking, long-lasting flowers are borne on tall, sturdy inflorescence. Excellent potential for a high level AOS award. We are offering mature plants with a minimum of 5 years with 35 – 45 cm leaf span. Highly recommended for all multi-floral Paph lovers.

PLEASE NOTE: Since this is a Seedling Population (not a Mericlone which produces exact duplicates), the picture is for illustration purposes only. No two plants will be the same from this cross, and they will flower in a range of possibilities coming from the two parents.
