Phal. schilleriana is an impressive, desirable orchid species, producing many large flowers on a single inflorescence. Yes, the flowers do look a bit like common Phal hybrids (after all, the hybrids had to have gotten these genes from their species ancestors), this species beats the hybrids hands down when you look at the leaves. They are mesmerizing with their mottled patterns! Only around five Phal species (maybe six) have mottled leaf patterns, and schillerianas are distinctive amongst these, with some types even having somewhat banded patterns. Common Phal hybrids have a lot going for them — they’re beautiful, plentiful, and growers are successful. But breeders really missed the mark in developing these mass-produced hybrids in one way — they didn’t pay any attention to the leaves! With the floriferousness, fragrance, and fantastic foliage in Phal schilleriana, it’s a shame commercial breeders didn’t take advantage of the excellent genetics found in this fine species. In our breeding program, we’ll definitely work to rectify this!

In the meantime, enjoy one of these Phal schillerianas in your collection. They’re as easy to grow as Phal hybrids, but just…better.

How to grow:
1) Moderate shade (avoid prolonged direct sun). Keep humidity high for best growth.
2) Water once to twice a week; let dry between waterings.
3) Use NZ Sphagnum Moss or chunky bark for plenty of aeration at the roots.
4) Fertilize twice per month.
5) Avoid temps below 50 F; temps into the 90s F or even over 100 F are tolerable if kept shady and well-watered
