Actor and businesswoman Sonia Mbele appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate Court on Thursday for the first time in the tax evasion case against her and two other accused, where the prosecutor Kamohelo Selepe said all charges against the three were withdrawn.
The withdrawal of the charges against Mbele comes after she, on Wednesday, signed an admission of guilt and paid the applicable fee of R41 000.
Mbele, Yolisa Gqunta and Rebone Sesing faced 41 counts of not filing company income, Value Added and Pay As You Earn taxes from 2019 to 2022 and 2020 to 2022, respectively, for their company The Real Housewives of South Africa (Pty) Ltd.
Though Mbele footed the R1000 per count bill, she previously said that, to her knowledge, the company was no longer operational.
Earlier in the month, the former Generations actor was given a final warning to appear in court on Friday after failing to appear twice. Both times, she submitted medical certificates for her absence.
"You will remember Sonia Mbele was admitted in May from work burnout, which turned chronic. She is currently getting treatment and taking weekly iron drips," her production company, Sonia Mbele Films, spokesperson Thato Malindi said at the time.
