Phalaenopsis schilleriana, commonly known as Schiller's moth orchid, is a stunning evergreen, epiphytic orchid celebrated for its semi-pendent, broadly-elliptic, fleshy leaves. These leaves are a visual delight, with dark green surfaces marbled in silver-grey spots on top and a rich purple overlay underneath. They can grow up to 45 cm long and 5-7 cm wide, making them a striking addition to any collection.

During winter and spring, Phalaenopsis schilleriana produces enchanting rose-pink flowers, each 5-9 cm across, with a captivating purple or yellow lip. These blooms appear in branching racemes, and under optimal conditions, the plant can produce an impressive display of up to 250 flowers on stems that reach 90-100 cm in length. Mounted plants will develop a more pendulous habit, adding to their unique charm.

Cultivating Tips:

Light Requirements: Phalaenopsis schilleriana thrives in low light conditions, making it perfect for windowsills and under-lights environments. While generally preferring shady spots, it can tolerate slightly brighter conditions, especially if a fan is nearby to ensure good air circulation.

Temperature: Phalaenopsis schilleriana is quite tolerant but should not be exposed to temperatures below 60 °F. For optimal flowering, cooler night temperatures around 55 °F in the fall are recommended to initiate flower spikes.

Potting Media: The choice of potting media depends on the climate: Northern Growers: A moisture-retaining mix such as peat-based "mud mixes" or medium fir bark is ideal. Southern Growers: Coarser potting media like medium fir bark or coconut husk chunks are preferred, often amended with additives like sponge rock, or chunky peat.

Potting Options: Phalaenopsis schilleriana can be grown in both plastic and clay pots. Clay pots are particularly beneficial in hotter environments due to their moisture evaporative qualities, which help keep the roots cooler. Hanging pots are also suitable, allowing the leaves to droop naturally and preventing crown rot.

Watering and Fertilizing: Maintain a regular watering schedule, ensuring the potting media stays moist but not waterlogged. The fertilizer regimen should be "weakly weekly," meaning a diluted fertilizer solution applied weekly, reduced to twice a month in winter to accommodate the plant's slower growth during colder months.

Air Circulation: Good air circulation is crucial for Phalaenopsis schilleriana to prevent fungal and bacterial infections. Placing the plant near a fan can help maintain a healthy environment, especially in more humid conditions.

This is a blooming size in a 3" pot, about 1 to 2 years to bloom, grown from seed, limited!

By following these cultivating tips, you can enjoy the stunning beauty and graceful presence of Phalaenopsis schilleriana in your home or greenhouse. This easy-to-grow species orchid not only enhances your space with its vibrant leaves and abundant blooms but also brings a touch of elegance and tranquility.
