Introducing the vibrant and exotic Maxillaria sanguinea, a mesmerizing orchid species native to the lush rainforests stretching from Costa Rica to Western Panama. With its striking appearance and unique characteristics, this medium-sized epiphyte is sure to captivate orchid enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Maxillaria sanguinea shares similarities with its close relative, Maxillaria tenuifolia, yet distinguishes itself with a slightly fruity fragrance and distinct features. Sporting fusiform pseudobulbs and narrow leaves never wider than 3 mm, this orchid showcases a delicate beauty that sets it apart.

Cultivating this stunning species requires attention to specific environmental factors to ensure optimal growth and blooming. Here are some essential tips to help you nurture your Blood-Red Maxillaria:

Light: Provide moderate to bright light, filtering or dispersing intense sunlight to prevent leaf damage. Aim for a light level of 18000-25000 lux, ensuring the plant never faces direct midday sun exposure. Adequate air circulation is essential for healthy growth.

Temperature: Maintain warm to hot temperatures, with summer daytime averages between 29-31°C and nighttime lows around 20-22°C. Winter temperatures should range from 28-30°C during the day and 19-21°C at night, with a slight decrease in watering to accommodate the cooler conditions.

Humidity: Maintain a humidity level of 70-80% to mimic the orchid's natural habitat. Insufficient humidity can hinder growth and lead to leaf yellowing and drying. Good air movement is crucial to prevent fungal diseases, especially in warmer conditions.

Substrate and Repotting: Opt for well-draining substrates such as medium-sized fir bark or shredded tree-fern fiber. Consider adding coarse perlite and charcoal to improve substrate structure and prevent acidification. Repot when the substrate decomposes or the pot becomes too small, preferably during the emergence of new roots.

Watering: Water frequently during active growth, ensuring excellent drainage to prevent root rot. Adjust watering frequency as new growths mature in the fall, reducing water intake accordingly.

Fertilization: Fertilize weekly with 1/4-1/2 doses of orchid fertilizer during active growth. Use a balanced fertilizer or switch to high-nitrogen fertilizer in spring to mid-summer, followed by a phosphorus-rich fertilizer in late summer and autumn.

Rest Period: Blood-Red Maxillaria does not require a winter rest period. Maintain consistent conditions throughout the year, slightly reducing water and fertilization in winter while ensuring the plant never goes completely dry.

This is a blooming size in a 4" pot about 1 to 2 years to bloom, grown from seed, limited!

With proper care and attention to these cultivating tips, your Blood-Red Maxillaria will reward you with its stunning blooms and lush foliage, adding a touch of tropical elegance to any orchid collection.
