Introducing the Exquisite Cattleya bicolor 'Jose Neto' Orchid: A Brazilian Gem

Description: Cattleya bicolor 'Jose Neto' is a captivating orchid native to the lush landscapes of Brazil. In its natural habitat, it thrives as both an epiphyte, perched gracefully upon trees, and a lithophyte, nestled among rocks near water bodies, flourishing at altitudes ranging from 1000 to 1400 meters above sea level. This orchid is a testament to the unparalleled beauty of Brazilian flora, showcasing its unique adaptability and vibrant elegance.

Appearance: This medium to large-sized orchid boasts long and slender pseudobulbs, reaching up to 75 cm in length. These pseudobulbs host two apical, oblonglorate leaves, each measuring about 18 cm in length and 5 cm in width. The pièce de résistance, however, is the striking spring and early summer bloom. Delicate olive-green to olive-brown flowers, spanning 7-9 cm in diameter, grace the plant, emitting a fragrant, long-lasting aroma. The petals, resembling a blend of a rhombus and an egg, exhibit wavy edges, while the lip takes on a spoon-like form, ranging in color from pink to carmine red. The lip's inner portion is pure white, adorned with intricate patterns and a light fringe, adding to the orchid's allure. The column, wide and elegantly arched, boasts a charming pink hue and can extend up to 3 cm in length.

Cultivation Tips:

  • Light: Cattleya bicolor 'Jose Neto' is a light-loving orchid, capable of thriving in direct sunlight up to 65000 lux without harm. Adequate lighting is crucial for stimulating flowering. While it can tolerate direct sun, it's important to watch for the development of red-violet freckles on leaves or a yellowish shade, which can fade in winter. These signs indicate a need for a more moderate light setting.

  • Temperature: This orchid prefers a moderately warm temperature range but adapts well to varying indoor temperatures. Ideal conditions include daytime temperatures between 20-28°C and nighttime temperatures of 16-20°C. Maintaining a nighttime temperature 4-6°C lower than daytime is recommended, and even lower if possible (10-12°C) for optimal results.

  • Humidity: In its natural habitat, this orchid experiences relative humidity rarely dropping below 60%. To prevent fungal and bacterial diseases, maintain humidity by regular ventilation, especially in enclosed spaces with high humidity.

  • Substrate and Repotting: Cattleya bicolor 'Jose Neto' should be grown exclusively in massive clay pots, with stones at the bottom for drainage and stability. Repot when new sprouts reach approximately 5 cm in size and begin developing roots.

  • Watering: Adjust your watering routine based on temperature and light intensity. Higher temperatures and brighter light require more frequent and abundant watering. Be mindful not to overwater during the winter rest period.

  • Fertilization: During active growth, feed your orchid with a diluted fertilizer every third watering, using half the concentration recommended on the package. Foliar feeding by spraying diluted fertilizer onto the leaves is also beneficial.

  • Rest Period: This orchid experiences a winter resting period due to decreased light and cooler temperatures. Maintain daytime temperatures between 16-18°C and nighttime temperatures between 12-14°C. Water sparingly during this period, as excessive sweating can deplete the root system.

This is a blooming size division in a 5" pot, newly repotted, about 1 to 2 years to bloom, grown from seed, limited!

Cattleya bicolor 'Jose Neto' is not just an orchid; it's a masterpiece of nature that brings the enchanting beauty of Brazil to your home. With proper care and attention to its specific needs, you can enjoy its exquisite blooms and fragrant charm year after year.
