Cycnoches chlorochilon - Green-Lipped Cycnoches

Discover the captivating beauty of the Green-Lipped Cycnoches (Cycnoches chlorochilon). This South American orchid species showcases large and impressive green flowers that exude a delightful fragrance reminiscent of banana popsicles. With its unique characteristics and stunning appeal, it is a must-have addition to any orchid enthusiast's collection.

To ensure the optimal growth and blooming of your Cycnoches chlorochilon, follow these simple guidelines:

Watering and Fertilization: During the spring and summer months, this orchid species thrives when provided with ample water and regular fertilization. Keep the growing medium consistently moist, but avoid overwatering. Use a well-balanced orchid fertilizer to promote healthy growth and vibrant blooms.

Winter Care: As winter approaches, the plant's leaves will naturally turn brown and eventually fall off. During this dormant period, reduce watering and allow the growing medium to dry out. Only water if the pseudobulbs start to shrivel, indicating a need for moisture.

Lighting Requirements: The Green-Lipped Cycnoches prefers medium to high light levels. Provide bright, indirect light to promote strong growth and flowering. Avoid exposing the plant to direct sunlight, as it may cause leaf burn.

Temperature: This orchid species thrives in warm to hot temperatures. Maintain a consistent temperature range of approximately 20-30°C (68-86°F) throughout the year to ensure optimal growth and blooming.

Bloom Season: The Green-Lipped Cycnoches typically blooms in the late summer and fall, adding a touch of natural beauty to your living space during these seasons. Be patient and enjoy the anticipation as the inflorescence develops and produces 1-4 stunning flowers.

Native Habitat: Cycnoches chlorochilon is native to Panama, Colombia, and Venezuela. In Panama, it can be found in the province of Chiriquí and along the river La Maestra. In Venezuela, it grows on little-foliage trees near Caracas and along the old road between Caracas and Maracay. It is also reported in several states in Colombia, where it is the most common species of its genus.

This medium-sized orchid species typically reaches heights of 30-50 cm (12-20 inches). Cycnoches chlorochilon is an epiphytic orchid, meaning it grows on other plants, utilizing them for support. The plant features fusiform pseudobulbs, reaching up to 20 cm (8 inches) in length. These pseudobulbs are enveloped by non-foliaceous sheaths. The orchid carries 4 to 7 plicate, elliptic-lanceolate leaves measuring 12-30 cm (5-12 inches) in length and 2.5-5.0 cm (1-2 inches) in width.

With its green-colored petals and white lip adorned with a dark green, egg-shaped cavity, the Green-Lipped Cycnoches showcases a captivating flower structure. While male flowers are more commonly seen, occasionally female flowers also grace the inflorescence. The fragrance of these fleshy blooms adds to the allure, making it a true delight for the senses.

This is a blooming size orchid in a 4" pot, about 1 to 2 years to bloom, grown from seed, limited!
