Peacock Orchid

from $18.00

Pleione spp.

Tokisou  | トキソウ

While not a Japanese native, we had so much fun growing these last summer we had to offer them. Pleione are distributed throughout the mountains and foothills of the Himalayas. A truly hardy and easy-to-grow orchid the species are well adapted to cold temperatures and even frost. The growth habit of these unusual terrestrial orchids stems from relatively large pseudobulbs that form on top of the soil. Pleiones are renowned for their big, showy flowers that originate from new shoots formed at the base of the pseudobulb in early spring. They are pink to purplish, white or yellow, while the fringed, tubular lip is often paler or white, with yellow, red or purple dots and stripes. Blooms are spectacular and will last over a month. They are easily grown by the layman, easy to propagate and therefore are becoming very popular orchids. They are also accustomed to growing on cliff sides and steep moss-covered slopes and have a small root mass which make them excellent plants for small pots. We are excited to see them used more in kusamono plantings.
