Olympus C3040Z Quality Settings
- In the table above, the file size before compression is assumed to be horizontal times vertical pixels,
times 3 (3 bytes for 24-bit color), divided by 1024 (to obtain K). Except for TIFF, the result is then
divided by the assumed compression rate. This resulting file size is shown in the calculated file size column.
The given (Oly) file size is taken from a FAQ published by Olympus for the C3030Z (it does not seem to be available for the C3040Z).
In it, the compression ratios are incorrectly given as 1:2.7 and 1:8.
- With the Olympus Camedia C3040Z,
it is possible to configure the pixel resolution of images captured in TIFF mode. It is also possible to program
the SQ1 and SQ2 settings: each may be set to one of two pixel resolutions and compression levels (see table above).
However, it is NOT possible to select a pixel resolution or compression setting for SHQ and HQ; these modes
are preset for the maximum pixel resolution and a particular compression level.
- From the above, it is clear that the C3040Z has only three compression settings: none (TIFF), approximately 1:4
(SHQ, SQ1, SQ2) and 1:12 (HQ, SQ1 and SQ2). Note that the compression level for HQ (shown as "High" in
the table above) is the same as that for SHQ, i.e., 1:4.
- Confusingly, the High Quality (HQ) mode uses 1:12 compression (the same as the Normal mode in SQ1 and SQ2), whereas
the High quality mode in SQ1 and SQ2 uses 1:4 compression (same as the SHQ mode)! The table uses the naming convention
from the Olympus user manual.
- All in all, there are 15 quality settings: 5 TIFF, 1 SHQ, 1 HQ, 4 SQ1, and 4 SQ2. Except for TIFF, each quality mode
is defined as a combination of pixel resolution and compression setting.
