2022 Audi A6 Allroad has SUV practicality in wagon form

The brand’s esteemed performance characteristics, build quality and design are also on board.

The mid-sized A6 Allroad is a youngster in the Audi lineup, having entered the scene just two years ago. There are no major changes to the Allroad for 2022.

Allroad’s appeal lies in its SUV-like capability in the guise of a wagon, along with Audi’s esteemed performance characteristics, design, and build quality. The Allroad is a great option for a driving enthusiast who wants neither a sedan nor an SUV, seeks highway and twisty two-lane sportiness but also some off-pavement moxie, and has deep pockets.

There are two A6 Allroad trim levels: Premium Plus and Prestige. Both are powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine delivering a zesty 335 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Its driving partner is a seven-speed automatic transmission, and Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system is standard. The team functions flawlessly together.

EPA fuel economy ratings are 20 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined. Premium fuel is recommended.

Pricing starts at $67,995 for a Premium Plus model, and $73,495 for the Prestige. These figures include a $1,095 destination charge.

The A6 Allroad has roomy and firmly comfortable seating for five passengers within its exceptionally quiet cabin. A large rear cargo area provides 30 cubic feet of space when second-row seats are in upright position. When more cargo space is called for, second- row seats can be folded accordingly.

Interior design and materials live up to Audi’s high standards. Stowage bins and cubbies are kept to a minimum, giving the interior a clean streamlined look, an Audi thing. I’d trade the clean streamlined look for more stowage, and the look was blighted anyway by my cluster of small essential items with no place to put.

Three screens dominate the dashboard: Audi’s Virtual Cockpit digital driver information display, a 10.1-inch infotainment system display, and an 8-inch lower display.

The A6 Allroad is lavished with special features for comfort, convenience, safety, driver assistance, and connectivity. Infotainment technology is up-to-the-minute but not overly complex. My Premium Plus test car was outfitted to the hilt by the addition of Prestige and Luxury packages, and a $4,900 Bang & Olufsen Advanced sound system in lieu of the standard mere Bang & Olufsen Premium sound system.
