In 1954 presented the 300SL, a tubular frame-based coupé with its origins rooted in the W194, the brand’s racing car of the moment. Mercedes had no production plans but in 1953 Max Hoffman, the American Mercedes importer saw a market opportunity to create a street-going version and suggested this to Mercedes-Benz. The gull-winged coupé concept became reality, followed in 1957 by the open-top version, the 300SL Roadster. And so one of the most popular German sportscars came about. The space frame was adjusted to create a larger boot space in the Roadster and making getting in and out easier. Despite all of this the car stayed a proper 240 hp, three-litre straight-six sportscar. Whereas successive SL’s tend towards touring, the original SL was still firmly a racing car based 50’s supercar.

The fantastic model you see here was built in 1961 and comes with a lovely provenance. For years the car was maintained in the well-trusted hands of a well-known German expert. Only a few cars after this 300SL was built the option of an aluminium engine and disc brakes became available. The chassis number indicates it is only 4 numbers away from the start of that variation. That would explain why the original steel engine and drum brakes were more than likely immediately exchanged for the aluminium engine and disc brakes at the time of supply.

The 300SL’s black paintwork really stands out, especially in combination with the plentiful chrome and stylish chrome rims with black hubcaps. The car is totally in undamaged state with the paint finish having a lovely deep lustre. All panels are straight with correct alignment as you would expect from a car of this calibre.

The interior is tastefully appointed with a combination of lovely brown leather upholstery, ivory-coloured detail such as the steering wheel and gear knob, black paintwork and lots of chrome, forging it into a very stylish cabin space. Two fine and large round meters flank the otherwise vertically sited other meters are easy to read as you peer through the thin but very pleasant feeling steering wheel. The upholstery is gorgeous and clearly chosen from the best hides. The Becker Europa radio is the icing on the cake. The engine bay is incredibly appealing. The 2,996 cc six-cylinder looks pristine in its very clean and well-cared-for bay. Even on closer inspection, you cannot be but amazed at how immaculate every part looks. This generous power plant with a mechanical Bosch fuel injection system is attached to a manual 4-speed gearbox.

Driving this 300SL is a tremendous experience underlining that even compared to current standards it is abundantly obvious just how good this car must have been back in its day. A terrific engine, road handling comparable or even superior to your average modern car and a detailed finish surpassed by only a selected few; absolute top-class on all levels. It is not for nothing that so many 300SL’s participate in the yearly Mille Miglia. Whether it’s cruising at top speed or sticking to the tarmac on winding roads, it is all quite a delightful adventure in a SL. You also can rest assured in the knowlegde that the well-known Mercedes-Benz build quality will provide endless miles of care-free motoring.
This lovely 300SL story is even better by having a nice amount of documentation. We have original books, lots of history, the original Datakarte, ‘scheckheft’, luggage set and hardtop.
In other words, everything you could wish for in a top-class 300SL.
