Press Release:

Canon today launches two PowerShot models that bring a new level of fun, creative and easy photography to the digital compact camera market. The PowerShot A2200 and PowerShot A1200 combine Canon know-how with HD video capture and easy to use shooting modes including Smart Auto – making it simple for everyone to achieve great results with one simple touch of a button.

The PowerShot A2200, the slimmest A-series model to date, is powered by a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery and is available in black, red, silver and blue. It provides users with a portable and flexible camera that’s also simple to use. Available in either silver or black, the AA battery-powered PowerShot A1200 is the perfect everyday camera, offering a comfortable, wide grip and an optical viewfinder for easy framing.

Affordable Canon performance
Canon has drawn on its extensive imaging expertise to ensure the PowerShot A2200 and PowerShot A1200 offer the strong mix of design, excellent image quality and ease of use that consumers expect from a PowerShot camera. The PowerShot A2200 features a 14.1 Megapixel sensor and the PowerShot A1200 offers a 12.1 Megapixel sensor, allowing users to print poster size images or creatively crop to produce the perfect composition.

Both models include a genuine Canon 28mm wide-angle lens, providing a 4x optical zoom range from an equivalent 35mm focal range of 28–112mm, to capture a range of subjects from wide group shots to portraits, as well as macro shots of flowers or insects.

Each also features a large, 6.8cm (2.7”) 230k dot LCD screen for easy framing when shooting and for convenient browsing of captured images. An intuitive mode dial on both models makes accessing a range of different shooting modes quick and easy. The Hints & Tips user interface also guides users through camera settings and allows them to better understand the functions of their camera as they use it.

Great shots made easy
Featuring Canon’s powerful DIGIC 4 image processing, both new models produce high image quality, ultra-fast response and support for a range of creative and practical shooting modes.

Both also feature the latest version of Canon’s Smart Auto – a fully-automatic shooting mode capable of detecting up to 32 different shooting scenes - making it easy for users to capture accurate, high quality shots of any subject in all lighting conditions. Smart Auto detects subjects in a range of lighting conditions, from high contrast spot-lit portraits, to sunsets, to landscapes with blue skies. Once the scene has been detected, Smart Auto automatically adjusts the camera’s settings to capture the best possible image, and instantly adapts if the image is recomposed prior to capture.

Even when the subject is moving, Smart Auto can use Face Detection Technology, along with its newly-introduced Advanced Subject Detection Technology, to automatically detect the main subject, whether a person or an object, and track it to the point when the shutter is released. This allows the user to achieve an in-focus and well-exposed shot.

When shooting in locations where flash photography is restricted, such as in museums, a new Discreet mode disables the flash and all camera sounds, allowing users to capture the scene without disturbing those around them. A dedicated Blur Reduction mode is also ideal for shooting in particularly challenging low-light conditions where camera shake and subject movement can result in the final image being blurred. This reduced resolution mode will automatically detect subject movement and the brightness of the scene and work to eliminate blur and obtain a sharp, clear result.

In addition to the impressive stills capabilities of both cameras, each features 720p HD video capture – allowing users to record scenes with high definition quality.
Miniature Effect in Movie mode is also included, allowing users to capture distinctive time-lapse footage with the scene transformed into a miniature scale model.

Freedom to create - features that make photography fun
For those who wish to have some control or give their images a personal touch, Live View Control mode provides the ability to manually change settings for brightness, colour or tone and see the result instantly on the LCD screen, before the image is recorded. In addition to Miniature Effect, other exciting Creative Filters include Fish-eye, Super Vivid and Poster Effect. A new Toy Camera Effect also gives images the retro feel of pinhole camera photos, while Monochrome Effect provides the ability to apply sepia, black and white and other monochromatic tones.

The addition of Smart Shutter with Face Detection Technology also allows users to be in their own photos, with the ability to trigger the shutter with a smile, a wink or simply after a new face enters the frame – perfect for self-portraits or group shots.

Sharing special moments with friends and family has never been easier. Owners of the PowerShot A2200 and PowerShot A1200 will be able to become members of the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY, offering up to 2GB free, secure, online space to upload and share images and video.

having just bought a canon powershot a2200. what a disapointment. cramming 14 mp on 1/2.3 inch sensor is asking for trouble. noise is terrible even at iso 200. why canon have done this- god only knows. they reduced the mp on g11 to improve noise with excellent results. why INCREASE them on the a2200 as opposed to the excellent 10mp a490. on the a490 iso1600 is better than iso 200 on the a2200 noisewise. i do hope canon will learn a lesson.
