I’m a street photographer in Chicago who started with a bulky Canon 7D DSLR, then switched to shooting film the last two years using a 35mm point and shoot from the 80s. I have an affinity for old things and simplicity. This first-generation Coolpix “Life” series of compact digital cameras really scratched my itch. I started with the L11, of which I’ve had 3. Overall, I’d call the body design sturdy, but the latch mechanism for the battery cover is anything but. It broke for 2 out of my 3. Of the original L10 - 12 line, the latter is definitely the way to go now buying it used; it bumps up the ISO from 800 to 1600, among some other feature upgrades. The options available on the body and via the menu system are obvious enough to not need a menu, which adds to my pleasure in using. Although, I do wish you could select the ISO. The auto focus is slow, especially so now 12 years later. I’ve learned to deal with it even shooting candid on the street. Image quality is solid in sunlight; it falls off dramatically in low light as you would expect. The flash is weak, so you’ve got to keep close. Given we’re in the era of a smartphone saturated photoscape, with built-in HDR and software-generated portrait mode, this early camera offers a particular type of low-fi digital aesthetic. But the best part is having a very pocketable, easy to use, purpose-built brick in your hand that allows you to make photos while keeping your phone in your pocket, doing so with Britney Spears era style. I have used this model camera for 10 years. This is the 4th I have had as I have broken the lens in the other three. My fault. I use the camera in the inspection business and am in areas of low light often. This Nikon L12 takes very good photos in low light without a flash.
