Nikon COOLPIX 8700 Digital Camera
Bought this camera as a step up from my 5700. The camera does everything I want, with its 10X optical zoom lens which goes from 35mm-350mm (equivalent). The controls are easy to use, basically just point and shoot, although there is plenty you can adjust if you need to. Its really robust having been dropped a few times with no problems except a scratch on the viewfinder. (I mostly use the LCD display as its less obvious you're taking photos.) It has a hot shoe attachment for my Nikon SB80DX digital flashgun which is great for bounce flash and has enough output to light up a church. On recommendation I bought the add-on battery pack which was a disaster. It takes 6 AA batteries which dont last any longer than the internal Li-ion battery, and since chargers only charge 4 at a time its ... Bought this camera as a step up from my 5700. It also makes the camera much bigger and heavier, and the only upside I could see was it was easier to hold for portrait shots. I also bought the wide angle and tele attachments and promptly sold them again. What they dont tell you is that they only work with the camera at a fixed zoom setting, and if you try to zoom they could break the camera. They dont give you any real flexibility, and the quality is cr*p. So get the camera and enjoy but apart from a case dont bother with accessories! If you need a wide angle (eg for pictures inside a house) go for the 8400 which offers 24-85mm or perhaps the Olympus Camedia C7070 at 27-110mm. UPDATE APR 2009: Compact cameras such as the Panasonic Lumix series are now capable of doing most everything the 8700 does - except for the flash attachment; so if you need that the 8700 is still a good option. Otherwise consider a compact because its easier to carry with you - and if you aint got the camera you wont get the shot!

I bought my first 5700 in 2001 and I loved it. It was one of the first decent point and shoot cameras and the only drawback was that it was a bit pricey. After eight years it got a little tired when I was focusing and although it still took good landscapes and portraits in decent light it could not really auto focus too great inside or in bad light. (Not bad for a camera that has been to to the top of numerous Scottish mountains and traversed the Sahara Desert) This was a very robust camera and lasted really well so when it was time to replace it I got a used 8700 from eBay. As my 5700 lasted eight good years the way I dragged it about I knew that I could take a chance on getting a used 8700 as they were the step up from the 5700. I have had a good eleven years usage from these two cameras ... I bought my first 5700 in 2001 and I loved it. I now have two Coolpix 8700's. This one is a spare in case of one failing. I have used the 8700 for a number of years now, mainly for Wedding Photography, and the results are stunning. The camera is so easy to use, it is a cross between point and shoot and an SLR. The inbuilt lens gives high quality photos with a good range of zoom facilities. Various program settings ensure that the results are perfect every time. I wouldn't be without itI now have two Coolpix 8700's. This one is a spare in case of one failing. i love it!
i bought this camera as we needed new one to make photos to our 18 months old daughter.old one was just a simple compact.i think i love everything about this nikon!one thing that is a minus is it's weight but obviously this have to be a lot heavier than a compact.picture quality is excellent.
