Horse Fleam, 1793

Used for bloodletting horses. The ancient medical practice of bloodletting was eventually discredited in the nineteenth century, but was fervently believed in by both doctors and patients. In the early 1800s, hundreds of millions of leeches were imported to Europe for bloodletting purposes. Veterinarians were no different, and horses were bled as well as people.
