Even if you're new to digital photography, you'll find the Olympus D-560 super-easy to use. But this stylish, compact camera isn't just for beginners — it delivers impressive picture quality and flexible shooting options that enthusiasts will love!

Equipped with a 3.2-megapixel CCD, the D-560 lets you snap crisp, colorful photos at up to 2048 x 1536 resolution. You'll really appreciate the extra detail when making prints of your favorite shots — especially larger sizes like 8" x 10". Exclusive Olympus TruePic™ technology analyzes and processes every shot for maximum clarity, even in lower resolution settings.

Select different auto exposure modes for optimal performance under a variety of shooting conditions. You can view your subject through the optical viewfinder, or the 1-13/16" color LCD display. Photos are stored on the included 16MB xD-Picture Card™; transfer them to a USB-capable PC via the USB interface (cable included), for editing, e-mailing, posting on the web, and more! When you want hard copies of your pics, Exif Print makes for extra-accurate reproduction of photos with a compatible photo printer.

Other nice touches include a 3X optical/10X total zoom, a handy movie mode for taking QuickTime® movie clips, a video output for viewing your pictures on most TVs, and a sliding front panel that protects the camera's lens.

Features

Recording Media: The camera records still images or moving images on an xD Picture Card (a 16MB card is supplied). Still images are recorded in JPEG format. Moving images are recorded in the Quick Time Motion JPEG format. Non-Olympus brand cards must first be formatted before using in the camera.

Recording Modes: Several recording modes are available requiring varying amounts of memory: SHQ (super high quality), HQ (high quality), SQ1 and SQ2 (standard quality). When recording movies, you can choose between HQ and SQ.

Resolution: Still images can be recorded at one of the following resolutions: 2048 x 1536 pixels (SHQ, HQ), 1024 x 768 pixels (SQ1), and 640 x 480 pixels (SQ2). Moving images can be recorded at 320 x 240 (HQ Movie) or 160 x 120 (SQ Movie).

TruePic Technology: This camera has Olympus' exclusive TruePic technology for producing better images. Most digital camera designs throw away pixels when creating smaller file sizes. TruePic technology utilizes all the pixels captured by the CCD to create a better and truer photographic image, especially at lower resolutions. This technology also micro-smoothes the image to produce a clearer and smoother photo.

Automatic Pixel Mapping: In some rare cases, the camera may acquire some "dead" or "stuck" pixels in the CCD. Automatic Pixel Mapping (APM) allows you to engage a menu function and re-map the CCD, instead of having to send the camera back to an Olympus service center. The APM feature is normally only found in expensive, high-end studio cameras. It is recommended that Pixel Mapping be done once a year.

Exif Print (Exif 2.2): The Olympus D-560 Zoom conforms to "Exif Print", a worldwide standard. Vital camera settings (such as: exposure mode, white balance, exposure time) and scene data are recorded to the image file when it is captured. Printers compatible with "Exif Print" are able to use this information to produce high quality photographs, exactly the way they were intended at the time of capture. This intelligent communication process also allows the printer to correct for poor lighting or mistakes, resulting in photos that can be even better than the originals.

PRINT Image Matching II: PRINT Image Matching II (P.I.M. II), a technology developed--and recently updated--by Seiko Epson Corporation, ensures that P.I.M. II-enabled digital cameras and printers work together perfectly to produce the best possible prints. After an image is captured, the camera automatically tags the picture with 14 optimal image settings and includes it as part of the Exif Print header in the JPEG file. A P.I.M. II-enabled photo printer reads and utilizes the information in order to make the most accurate print. Note: Cameras with P.I.M. II are completely backward-compatible with printers with the original P.I.M. technology.

Sensitivity: The D-560 Zoom automatically sets the camera's sensitivity between 60 and 400 ISO. Similar to 35mm photography, the higher the ISO value, the greater the camera's light sensitivity and better its ability to shoot in low light conditions.

White Balance: Color reproduction differs depending on the lighting conditions. This camera allows you to automatically or manually adjust the White Balance setting. Manual settings include sunlight, overcast, tungsten light and florescent light.

Image Pickup Device: This camera uses a high quality 1/2.5" (.40") CCD solid-state image pickup with 3.34 million gross pixels (3.2 million effective pixels).

Viewfinder and LCD Monitor: This camera has an optical viewfinder with an autofocus/backlight mark. The camera is also equipped with 1.8" color TFT LCD monitor (approx. 85,000 pixels). The LCD monitor allows you to view images being taken as well as review stored images. The brightness of the monitor can be adjusted for optimum viewing.

Monitor Indicators: The LCD monitor displays status indicators, which include shooting information, playback information, a battery gauge and memory gauge. In the camera menu, you can indicate whether you want just the basic information displayed in the viewfinder and monitor (Info off), or very detailed information in the display (Info on).

Auto-Connect USB Port: The camera has an Auto-Connect USB port for quick downloading of images to a computer. This port is compatible with most computers with a USB port without additional software to be installed.

Virtual Mode Dial: The menu system of the D-560 Zoom features a "virtual dial" control, which allows you to quickly access the various shooting and playback modes and settings. The menu headings appear on the LCD monitor in a circular fashion and are activated by pressing the four arrow keys on the back of the camera.

Optics: The lens in the camera is an Olympus aspherical 5.8mm to 17.4mm glass lens with an 3x optical zoom, specifically designed for digital photography. It contains 5 elements in 3 groups and is equivalent to a 35mm to 105mm lens on a 35mm camera. It has an aperture range of F3.1 to F5.2.

Shutter Speeds: The camera's shutter speeds range from 1/2 second to 1/1000 second in normal shooting mode. In the Night Scene mode, the shutter speed can be a maximum of 2 seconds.

Zoom: In addition to the 3x optical zoom, the camera has a 3.4x digital zoom which, in combination, results in a seamless 10x zoom.

Flash Modes: This camera features an automatic flash which fires in low-light and backlight conditions. There are additional flash modes to choose from including: red-eye reduction, fill-in flash, and flash off. The flash charging time is approximately 6 seconds at normal operating temperature with a charged battery. The flash working ranges are 0.7' to 11' for wide angle, and 0.7' to 7' for telephoto.

AutoFocus/Focus Lock: This camera features a TTL (through-the-lens) automatic focusing system with contrast detection. The AutoFocus (AF) mark appears as brackets "[  ]" in the LCD monitor and as "cross hairs" in the optical viewfinder. When composing the shot, you should place the subject in the center of the AF mark for proper focus. If the subject does not appear inside the AF mark, you can "lock" the focus by placing the subject in the center of the AF mark, press the shutter button halfway, then recompose the shot and press the shutter button fully to take the picture.

Focusing Ranges (Normal and Macro): The focusing range for the normal shooting mode is 1.6'  (approx. 19") to infinity. In the macro mode, the range is 0.7' (approx. 8") to 1.6'.

Power Requirements: This camera uses two "AA"-sized alkaline batteries (supplied). Two optional "AA"-sized Nickel-Cadmium (Ni-Cad) or Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) rechargeable batteries can also be used in this camera, as well as a non-rechargeable Olympus CR-3v Lithium Battery Pack (available from the manufacturer).  To operate the camera on AC power, an optional Olympus E-7AU AC adapter (item # 279E7AU) should be used. An AC adapter is recommended when showing images in a slide-show fashion for long periods of time. Note: No battery capacity information is available.

Inputs/Outputs: The camera has a DC input jack for use with the optional E-7AU AC adapter. The video output jack (a mini-jack output for use with the supplied composite video cable) allows you to connect the camera to a TV (NTSC or PAL system). The USB connector (Mini-USB Version 2.0) allows you to connect the camera to a computer for downloading images. You can also connect the camera directly to a compatible photo printer through the USB jack.

Sleep Mode: To save battery power, the camera automatically enters the sleep mode and stops operation after approximately 3 minutes has passed with no operations being performed. If the monitor is on, it will automatically turn off, and the lens will retract automatically 5 minutes after that. The camera activates again as soon as you lightly press the shutter button or zoom button.

Time and Date Information: The camera has an internal clock, and the time and date information can be recorded on each image, if desired. The automatic calendar system will display dates through 2099.

Basic Shooting Modes: The D-560 Zoom offers 6 basic shooting modes (including 4 Scene Programs), selectable from the main shooting mode menu:

  • Program Auto: This mode is used for regular photography. The camera automatically makes the settings for natural color balance. Other functions, such as the flash mode and metering, can be adjusted manually.
  • Portrait Shooting: This automatic mode allows you to shoot a portrait-style image of a person. Importance is placed on reproducing skin texture. The camera automatically sets the optimal shooting conditions with the foreground subject in focus and the background out of focus.
  • Landscape: This mode is excellent for shooting natural outdoor scenery. The camera automatically sets the optimal shooting conditions. The foreground and background are both in focus and the colors are more vividly reproduced.
  • Night Scene: The camera automatically sets a slower shutter speed than normal, suitable for shooting pictures in the evening or at night.
  • Self-Portrait: When you take a picture of yourself while holding the camera, the camera automatically selects the optimal settings and the focus is locked on you. The zoom is fixed in the wide position and cannot be changed.
  • Movie Record: This fully automatic mode allows you to record movies. The camera sets the aperture and shutter speed automatically; the focus and exposure are locked when the shutter button is pressed halfway. There is no sound recorded with this camera.

Advanced Shooting: Controls on the rear panel of the camera can also access the following advanced shooting modes:

  • Macro Mode: You can shoot close to the subject (0.7 to 1.6 feet--approximately 8" to 19") with quicker focusing.
  • Self-Timer Shooting: This mode is useful for taking pictures when you want to be included in the photograph. In this mode, the image is recorded 12 seconds after the shutter is pressed. The self-timer mode is cancelled after one shot.
  • Spot Metering: You can choose between Digital ESP metering (meters the center of the screen and the area around it), and Spot metering (meters only the center of the screen). Spot metering can be helpful when the subject is lit with backlighting by metering directly on the subject only.
  • Sequential Shooting (Drive Mode): You can shoot a rapid succession of up to 11 still pictures at approximately 1.5 frame per second in the HQ mode.
  • Panorama Shooting: It is possible to connect together images with overlapping edges into a single panoramic image. You can connect together up to 10 images either horizontally or vertically. This function requires the use of Olympus CAMEDIA brand xD Picture Cards and the supplied CAMEDIA Master software.
  • 2-In-1 Shooting: This feature allows you to take two pictures in succession and store them side-by-side as one image. After selecting "2-In-1" in the menu, the first shot taken will be stored on the left half of the frame and the second shot taken will be stored on the right half of the frame.

Exposure Compensation: In some situations, you may get better results when the exposure set by the camera gets compensated (adjusted) manually. You can adjust the brightness +/-- 2.0 EV in 0.5 steps.

Mode Reset: After you have changed some of the settings, such as exposure and white balance, you can quickly return to the factory default settings by performing a Mode Reset.

All Reset: This function lets you choose whether or not to save the current camera settings after the power is turned off (All Reset Off), or return the camera back to the factory default settings (All Reset On).

Image Playback: Once the images or movies have been captured, the camera gives you several options for playing them back. For still images, you can play them back one at a time manually or present them in a slide show fashion. You can also enlarge the images up to 4x, or rotate the images if they aren't oriented horizontally. For viewing multiple images at once, you can create an index display of 4, 9 or 16 frames. For movies, you can playback the images in full motion, create an index of 9 frames, or display one frame at a time.

Displaying On A TV: Still images and movies can be viewed on a conventional TV through the supplied composite video output cable. In the menu, you can select the proper video signal type (NTSC or PAL) depending upon the region you're in.

Editing Still Images: You can edit images in the camera and store them as new images before transferring them to a computer. You can create black-and-white or sepia-toned images, or resize the pictures into smaller files such as 640 x 480 or 320 x 240 pixels. This is frequently done when you want to attach an image to an e-mail.

Erasing/Protecting Images: Unwanted images can be erased one at a time or all at once. You can protect important images to avoid accidentally erasing them. Once an image is protected, it cannot be erased during a single-frame erase or all-frame erase function. Note: Protected images can be erased when a card is reformatted.

Printing Options: Once the images have been captured and edited, you have three options for printing the pictures you have taken:

  • Computer: If you have downloaded the CAMEDIA Master software on your computer, or if it has software applications that support JPEG images, you can print images on a printer connected to your computer.
  • Print Reservation (for Printing at a Photo Lab): Applying Print Reservation to your pictures allows you to take the camera or an xD-Picture Card to a DPOF-compatible photo lab for printing. DPOF is the Digital Print Order Format, and allows you to add information to your photographs such as which pictures to print, adding date and time to each image, the number of prints desired, etc. You can also print images on a personal DPOF-compatible printer.
  • Olympus CAMEDIA Printer: You can print directly from an xD-Picture Card to an Olympus CAMEDIA P-400 or P-200 digital printer. Note: The xD-Picture Card cannot be inserted directly into the printer--a card adapter (sold separately) will be necessary.

Supplied Software
