About the Olympus C-750 Ultra Zoom

Julie Govan
If you've got some film photography experience under your belt, and are in search of a digital camera with the perfect mix of high resolution, manual control, and easy usability, the C-750 Ultra Zoom may be your new best friend.

If you've got some film photography experience under your belt, and are in search of a digital camera with the perfect mix of high resolution, manual control, and easy usability, the C-750 Ultra Zoom may be your new best friend.

Olympus' C-750 starts off with 4-megapixel recording, for detail-rich photos. All-glass lens elements and Olympus' TruePic™ technology ensure accurate, vivid color in every picture you take. And with a top resolution of 2288 x 1712, photos even look good printed out in larger sizes like 8" x 10"! Plus, there's the impressive 10X optical zoom — an unusually powerful zoom for a digital camera.

Folks who need more than point-and-shoot simplicity often gravitate to the C-Series line of cameras, and here's why. Along with full automatic capability, the C-750 gives you features like manual focusing with a gauge; auto exposure presets for common uses like portrait shots or sporting events; and manual adjustment of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO (sensitivity, or film speed equivalent). With "My Modes," up to four different users can store their favorite settings for quick access — nice if the C-750 is going to serve as a family camera!

You can use the built-in flash whenever you want, and the hot shoe permits attachment of an external flash as needed (external flash not included). If you're expecting to print a lot of photos, you'll appreciate Exif 2.2 capability; it records information about shooting conditions when a picture was snapped, so an Exif-compatible photo printer can produce even more realistic photos. A last convenience that could save shutterbugs a lot of money: the C-750 comes with rechargeable batteries and a charger.

Features

Recording Media: The camera records still images or moving images on an xD Picture Card (a 16MB card is supplied). Still images are recorded in TIFF and JPEG format. Moving images are recorded in the Quick Time Motion JPEG format. Non-Olympus brand cards must first be formatted before using in the camera.

Recording Modes: Images can be recorded in several modes requiring varying amounts of memory. The recording modes include:

  • TIFF: This is the highest quality mode. Images are saved as uncompressed data, and require an enormous amount of memory.
  • SHQ: The highest quality mode in the JPEG format, SHQ uses very low compression, giving you high quality pictures, but requires lots of memory.
  • HQ: This is a high quality mode using medium compression, allowing you to store more images on a card than SHQ.
  • SQ1/SQ2: These are the most compressed modes. For each resolution, you can choose "High" (to reduce noise) or "Normal" (to store more images).

3:2 Recording: Image aspect ratio is normally 4:3. When you select a 3:2 aspect ratio image, the resolution becomes 2288 x 1520 pixels and can be used in TIFF, SHQ and HQ modes. The 3:2 mode allows you to print the entire image on 4 x 6-inch paper without losing its borders.

Resolution: Still images can be recorded at one of the following resolutions:

  • 3200 x 2400 pixels (Enlarge Size--interpolated from 2288 x 1712; SHQ, HQ)
  • 2288 x 1712 pixels (TIFF, SHQ, HQ)
  • 2288 x 1520 pixels (3:2 mode; TIFF, SHQ, HQ)
  • 2048 x 1536 pixels (TIFF, SQ1 High/Normal)
  • 1600 x 1200 pixels (TIFF, SQ1 High/Normal)
  • 1280 x 960 pixels (TIFF, SQ1 High/Normal)
  • 1024 x 768 pixels (TIFF, SQ2 High/Normal)
  • 640 x 480 pixels (TIFF, SQ2 High/Normal)

Moving images can be recorded at the following resolutions:

  • 320 x 240 @15 fps (HQ Movie)
  • 160 x 120 @15 fps (SQ Movie)

Optimum Image Enlargement (OIE): When Enlarge Size is selected in the SHQ or HQ modes, this 4 megapixel camera can produce a 7.6 megapixel file (3200 x 2400) through Optimum Image Enlargement (OIE). OIE is a new algorithm which allows the camera to scale up the image while it is still raw data in the camera. This allows a higher resolution image through advanced interpolation using the maximum optical spatial resolution of the CCD. Since the image enlargement happens before the image is saved as a JPEG it also reduces the JPEG artifacting that may happen in image-editing programs to achieve this same type of enlargement of the file size. OIE allows you to make high quality prints up to 11.7" x 16.5", however the file sizes are quite large.

TruePic Technology: This camera has Olympus' exclusive TruePic technology for producing better images. Most digital camera designs throw away pixels when creating smaller file sizes. TruePic technology utilizes all the pixels captured by the CCD to create a better and truer photographic image, especially at lower resolutions. This technology also micro-smoothes the image to produce a clearer and smoother photo.

Automatic Pixel Mapping: In some rare cases, the camera may acquire some "dead" or "stuck" pixels in the CCD. Automatic Pixel Mapping (APM) allows you to engage a menu function and re-map the CCD, instead of having to send the camera back to an Olympus service center. The APM feature is normally only found in expensive, high-end studio cameras. It is recommended that Pixel Mapping be done once a year.

Exif Print (Exif 2.2): The Olympus C-750 Ultra Zoom conforms to "Exif Print", a worldwide standard. Vital camera settings (such as: exposure mode, white balance, exposure time) and scene data are recorded to the image file when it is captured. Printers compatible with "Exif Print" are able to use this information to produce high quality photographs, exactly the way they were intended at the time of capture. This intelligent communication process also allows the printer to correct for poor lighting or mistakes, resulting in photos that can be even better than the originals.

PRINT Image Matching II: PRINT Image Matching II (P.I.M. II), a technology developed--and recently updated--by Seiko Epson Corporation, ensures that P.I.M. II-enabled digital cameras and printers work together perfectly to produce the best possible prints. After an image is captured, the camera automatically tags the picture with 14 optimal image settings and includes it as part of the Exif Print header in the JPEG file. A P.I.M. II-enabled photo printer reads and utilizes the information in order to make the most accurate print. Note: Cameras with P.I.M. II are completely backward-compatible with printers with the original P.I.M. technology.

Image Pickup Device: This camera uses a high quality 1/2.5" CCD solid-state image pickup with 4.22 million gross pixels (4 million effective pixels).

Adjustable Sensitivity: Similar to 35mm photography, the camera's ISO Sensitivity can be adjusted. The higher the ISO value, the greater the camera's light sensitivity and better its ability to shoot in low light conditions. You can choose from an automatic ISO setting or 50, 100, 200 or 400 manual ISO Sensitivity settings.

White Balance: Color reproduction differs depending on the lighting conditions. This camera allows you to automatically or manually adjust the White Balance setting, or use one of several presets. The WB presets include sunny day, cloudy day, tungsten light, daylight fluorescent (homes), neutral white fluorescent (desk lamps), and cool white florescent light (offices). You can preview different color tones by trying the different Preset WB settings under the actual light source and checking the result on the monitor. When you need a more precise white balance than the presets can provide, you can manually set the white balance using the "One Touch" WB mode. In addition, you can make fine changes to the current white balance setting by adjusting it up to 7 increments in either the + (blue) or -- (red) direction.

Viewfinder and LCD Monitor: This camera has a 0.44 inch TFT color electronic viewfinder (approx. 180,000 pixels) with an AutoFocus/Backlight mark and a 1.5-inch color TFT low-temperature poly-silicon LCD monitor (approx. 114,000 pixels). The viewfinder has a diopter adjustment dial which allows you to see the AutoFocus target mark more clearly. The LCD monitor allows you to view images being taken as well as review stored images.

Quick View: To quickly check shooting results in the LCD monitor, you can activate the Quick View, which will playback the last picture taken without switching out of the shooting mode.

Auto-Connect USB Port: The camera has an Auto-Connect USB port for quick downloading of images to a computer. This port is compatible with most computers with a USB port without additional software to be installed.

Optics: The lens in the camera is an Olympus  6.3mm to 63mm aspherical and ED glass lens with an 10x optical zoom, specifically designed for digital photography. It contains 11 elements in 7 groups and is equivalent to a 38mm to 380mm lens on a 35mm camera. It has an aperture range of f2.8 to f8.

Zoom: In addition to the 10x optical zoom, the camera has a 4x digital zoom which, in combination, results in a seamless 40x zoom. You can turn on/off the digital zoom.

Shutter Speeds: The camera's shutter speeds range from 1 second to 1/1000 second in shutter priority mode, and up to 16 seconds in the manual shooting mode.

Flash Modes: This camera features a pop-up flash which fires in low-light and backlight conditions. The flash charging time is typically less than 6 seconds at normal operating temperature with a charged battery. The flash working ranges are 1' to 14.8' for wide angle, and 3.9' to 11.5' for telephoto. You can lock the flash in the closed position if you want to prevent the flash from firing. You can also manually adjust the flash intensity +/-2.0 in 1/3 increments. The flash modes include:

  • Auto-Flash: The flash fires automatically in low light or backlight conditions.
  • Red-eye Reduction Flash: The camera emits a "pre-flash" to minimize the red-eye phenomenon.
  • Fill-in Flash: The flash fires regardless of the available light, eliminating shadows, correcting color shift from artificial lighting, or in a backlight situation.
  • Flash Off: The flash does not fire, even in low light conditions.
  • Slow Synchronization:
    • Slow 1: Called first curtain or front curtain, the flash fires right after the shutter fully opens.
    • Slow 2: Called second curtain or rear curtain, the flash fires right before the shutter closes.
    • Slow 1 (with red-eye reduction): First curtain flash, with red-eye reduction.

External Flash: The C-750UZ has a hot shoe for optional external flash attachments. If you use an Olympus FL-20 or FL-40 external flash, the intensity of the flash is automatically adjusted by the camera's light receptor as the light passes through the lens (TTL-Auto). Any brand of external flash can be used, provided that the flash can be connected to a hot shoe, but without the TTL-Auto functions of the FL-20 or FL-40. You cannot use the built-in flash and an external flash simultaneously.

Focusing System: This camera features a TTL (through-the-lens) multi-pattern automatic focusing system with contrast detection. The AutoFocus (AF) mark appears as brackets "[  ]" in the LCD monitor and the optical viewfinder. Some of the helpful focusing applications include:

  • AF Mode: You can select between iESP (focus based on the entire frame) and Spot Focus (based on the subject within the AF target mark).
  • Fulltime AF: This function keeps the subject in front of the lens in focus at all times.
  • Selectable AF Area: You can select the area to focus on by changing the position of the AF mark.
  • AF Lock: You can "lock" the focus on an "off-centered" subject by first focusing the AF mark on the subject, pressing the shutter button halfway, then recomposing the shot and pressing the shutter button fully to capture the shot.
  • Manual Focus: The area you're trying to focus on is enlarged. You can manually adjust the focus electronically by using the menu cursor along with the camera's built-in distance gauge.
  • Macro/Super Macro Modes: The Macro and Super Macro modes allow you to focus quickly on close-up subjects.

Focusing Ranges: The focusing range in the Normal shooting mode is 23.6" to infinity (Wide) and 6.6' to infinity (Tele). In the Macro mode, the range is 2.8" to 23.6" (W) and 3.9' to 6.6' (T). In the Super Macro mode, the range is 1.2" to 2.8".

Basic Shooting Modes: The C-750 Ultra Zoom offers many basic shooting modes (including 6 Scene Programs), selectable from the Mode Dial control on the camera:

  • Situation-Related Modes:
    • Full-Auto: This mode, the simplest of all shooting modes, allows you to take still pictures using no special functions or manual adjustments. The camera set the optimal focusing and exposure.
    • Portrait Shooting: This automatic mode allows you to shoot a portrait-style image of a person. Importance is placed on reproducing skin texture. The camera automatically sets the optimal shooting conditions with the foreground subject in focus and the background out of focus.
    • Sports: This mode is suitable for capturing fast-moving action without blur. The camera automatically sets the optimal shooting conditions.
    • Landscape: This mode is excellent for shooting natural outdoor scenery. The camera automatically sets the optimal shooting conditions. The foreground and background are both in focus and the blue and green colors are more vividly reproduced.
    • Landscape + Portrait: You can take clear pictures of both your subject and the landscape.
    • Night Scene: The camera automatically sets a slower shutter speed than normal, suitable for shooting pictures in the evening or at night. (Tripod recommended)
    • Self-Portrait: When you take a picture of yourself while holding the camera, the camera automatically selects the optimal settings and the focus is locked on you. The zoom is fixed in the wide position and cannot be changed.
  • Setting-Related Modes:
    • Program Shooting: The camera sets both the aperture and the shutter speed.
    • A/S/M:
      • Aperture Priority: You set the aperture and the camera sets the shutter speed.
      • Shutter Priority: You set the shutter speed and the camera sets the aperture.
      • Manual: You set both the aperture and shutter speed.
    • My Mode: Your favorite settings (aperture value, zoom position, etc) can be saved in one of four My Mode presets.
    • Movie Record: This fully automatic mode allows you to record movies with sound. The camera sets the aperture and shutter speed automatically; the focus and exposure are locked when the shutter button is pressed halfway.

Light Metering: There are 3 ways of measuring the brightness of a subject:

  • Digital ESP Metering: The camera meters the center of the subject and the surrounding area separately.
  • Spot Metering: Exposure is determined by metering within the AF target area. Spot metering can be helpful when the subject is lit with backlighting by metering directly on the subject only.
  • Multi-Metering: The camera meters at up to 8 different points to set the optimal exposure based on the average brightness.

AE Lock: Similar to AutoFocus Lock, you can "lock" in the exposure by placing the area you want to be metered within the AF target mark, pressing the shutter button halfway, then recomposing the shot and pressing the shutter button fully to capture the picture.

Exposure Compensation: In some situations, you may get better results when the exposure set by the camera gets compensated (adjusted) manually. You can adjust the brightness +/-- 2.0 EV in 1/3 steps.

Image Adjustments: You can make the following adjustments when in the shooting mode:

  • Sharpness: You can adjust the sharpness of the image contours from -5 to +5.
  • Contrast: You can adjust the contrast between light and dark images from -5 to +5.
  • Saturation: You can adjust the color depth from -5 to +5.
  • Noise Reduction: Reduces noise generated during long exposures.

Self-Timer Shooting: This mode is useful for taking pictures when you want to be included in the photograph. In this mode, the image is recorded 12 seconds after the shutter is pressed. The self-timer mode is cancelled after one shot.

Remote Control: The C-750 Ultra Zoom comes with an RM-1 wireless remote control. When in the record mode, you can press the W or T buttons to zoom in or out. You can also use the remote to start the self-timer mode if you want to be included in the shot (the self-timer mode delay is shortened when using the remote). In the playback mode, you can press the W button to get an index display and select pictures with the + and -- buttons. For a close-up display, you can press the T button. In case of IR code interference, you can switch to another code.

Sequential Shooting: In addition to normal, single-frame shooting, there are 3 sequential shooting modes:
  • Sequential Shooting: Shoots approximately 11 frames at 1.3 frames per second. Focus, exposure and white balance are locked at the first frame.
  • High-Speed Sequential Shooting: Pictures can be taken at a faster speed than normal sequential shooting. The speed varies depending on the record mode setting (approximately 2 frames at 1.8 frames per second)
  • AF Sequential Shooting: Focus is individually locked for each frame. The AF sequential shooting speed is slower than normal sequential shooting.

Auto Bracketing: If you're not sure if the Auto Exposure setting will be optimal for the shot you want, you can automatically take a sequence of pictures, all with different exposure settings. In the Bracketing menu, you can choose the exposure differential for each frame (+/- 0.3, +/- 0.7 or +/- 1.0) and the number of frames (x3 or x5) to shoot in sequence.

Panorama Shooting: It is possible to connect together images with overlapping edges into a single panoramic image. You can connect together up to 10 images either horizontally or vertically. This function requires the use of Olympus CAMEDIA brand xD Picture Cards and the supplied CAMEDIA Master software.

2-In-1 Shooting: This feature allows you to take two pictures in succession and store them side-by-side as one image. After selecting "2-In-1" in the menu, the first shot taken will be stored on the left half of the frame and the second shot taken will be stored on the right half of the frame.

Special Effects: Special effects can be added to your pictures during shooting:

  • Black & White: Pictures are taken in black and white
  • Sepia: Pictures are taken with a brownish sepia tone
  • White Board: Pictures are taken in black and white, with black letters on a white background for emphasis.
  • Black Board: Pictures are taken in black and white, with white letters on a black background for emphasis.

Recording Sound: Sound can be recorded when taking still pictures and movies. For still images, recording starts about 1/2 second after the shutter is released and lasts for about 4 seconds. A built-in microphone is located beside the lens on the front of the camera. Sound can be also be added to a picture after it has been taken (known as "after-recording"). You can record over any pre-recorded audio as well.

Custom Button/Shortcuts: Frequently used functions can be assigned to the Custom Button on the back panel of the camera, making it easy to access it without having to select it from a menu. You can also set three shortcut menus on the top menu for easy access when in the still picture shooting mode.

Power Requirements: This camera uses four Ni-MH rechargeable batteries. A BU-300 battery charger is supplied with the camera. Four optional "AA"-sized Nickel-Cadmium (Ni-Cad) or Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) rechargeable batteries can also be used in this camera.  To operate the camera on AC power, an optional Olympus C-7AU AC adapter (item # 279C7AU) should be used. An AC adapter is recommended when showing images in a slide-show fashion for long periods of time. Note: No battery capacity information is available.

Inputs/Outputs: The camera has a DC input jack for use with the optional C-7AU AC adapter. The A/V output jack (a mini-jack output for use with the supplied mono audio/composite video cable) allows you to connect the camera to a TV (NTSC or PAL system). The USB connector (Mini-B USB Version 2.0) allows you to connect the camera to a computer for downloading images. You can also connect the camera directly to a compatible photo printer through the USB jack.

Sleep Mode: To save battery power, the camera automatically enters the sleep mode and stops operation after a preset amount of time has passed with no operations being performed. You can select 30 seconds, 1 minute, 3 minutes, 5 minutes, or 10 minutes. In the playback mode, the sleep mode is activated after 3 minutes regardless of the setting, and the monitor turns off. If a slideshow lasts for more than 30 minutes, the camera automatically enters the sleep mode.

Time and Date Information: The camera has an internal clock, and the time and date information can be recorded on each image, if desired. The automatic calendar system will display dates through 2099.

Image Playback: Once the images or movies have been captured, the camera gives you several options for playing them back. For still images, you can play them back one at a time manually or present them in a slide show fashion. You can also enlarge the images up to 4x, or rotate the images if they aren't oriented horizontally. For viewing multiple images at once, you can create an index display of 4, 9 or 16 frames. For movies, you can playback the images in full motion, create an index of 9 frames, or display one frame at a time.

Displaying On A TV: Still images and movies can be viewed on a conventional TV through the supplied composite video output cable. In the menu, you can select the proper video signal type (NTSC or PAL) depending upon the region you're in.

Editing Movies: You can edit movies to remove unwanted scenes. The edited movie can be stored as a new file (leaving the original intact), or overwrite the old file with the edited movie under the same file name. You can also display 9 frames extracted from a movie as an index to show the movie at a glance. The index is stored as a single still image.

Editing Still Images: You can edit images in the camera and store them as new images before transferring them to a computer. You can resize the pictures into smaller files such as 640 x 480 or 320 x 240 pixels, saving them as a new image. This is frequently done when you want to attach an image to an e-mail. You can also crop the image (trimming) and save the edited picture as a new image.

Erasing/Protecting Images: Unwanted images can be erased one at a time or all at once. You can protect important images to avoid accidentally erasing them. Once an image is protected, it cannot be erased during a single-frame erase or all-frame erase function. Note: Protected images can be erased when a card is reformatted.

All Reset: This function lets you choose whether or not to save the current camera settings after the power is turned off (All Reset Off), or return the camera back to the factory default settings (All Reset On).

Printing Options: Once the images have been captured and edited, you have three options for printing the pictures you have taken:

  • Computer: If you have downloaded the CAMEDIA Master software on your computer, or if it has software applications that support JPEG images, you can print images on a printer connected to your computer.
  • Print Reservation (for Printing at a Photo Lab): Applying Print Reservation to your pictures allows you to take the camera or an xD-Picture Card to a DPOF-compatible photo lab for printing. DPOF is the Digital Print Order Format, and allows you to add information to your photographs such as which pictures to print, adding date and time to each image, the number of prints desired, etc. You can also print images on a personal DPOF-compatible printer.
  • Olympus CAMEDIA Printer: You can print directly from an xD-Picture Card to an Olympus CAMEDIA P-400 (item # 279P400) or P-200 digital printer. Note: The xD-Picture Card cannot be inserted directly into the printer--a card adapter (sold separately) will be necessary.
