Use the ultra-slim Sony DSC-T77 to capture snapshots of your most important events. This camera records images in striking 10.1-megapixel detail, so you can enlarge or crop your high-resolution photos without sacrificing clarity. It's easy to compose and review pictures on the bright 3" LCD touchscreen. Move in close to your subject with 4X optical zoom for natural, candid shots. And optical image stabilization offsets camera shake, so your photos turn out crystal-clear.

Count on face and smile detection to help you capture razor-sharp portraits of your kids or friends and their best expressions. An anti-blink feature even alerts you if your subject squints as you snap your shot, so you can try again. Not sure which special scene setting to use? A smart scene recognition mode selects it for you, so all you have to do is point and shoot. And if your picture doesn't turn out quite the way you wanted, choose from 11 in-camera editing functions to help spruce it up to perfection.

The camera's built-in 15MB memory holds approximately three shots at top resolution — add optional Memory Stick Duo cards for more storage.

General Features

Memory Stick Compatibility: This camera is compatible with the following recording media: Memory Stick Duo, MagicGate Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick PRO Duo, and Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo. All compatible Memory Stick Duos can be used to record still pictures and moving images with audio. The full size Memory Stick is not compatible.

15 MB Internal Memory: This camera has a 15 MB internal memory. Even when there is no Memory Stick inserted in the camera, you can record images using the internal memory. This memory is not removable.

Image Recording Format: The camera records still images in JPEG format. Moving images with audio (monaural) are recorded in MPEG1.

Imaging Device: For optimal image quality, the camera uses a 7.7mm (1/2.3" type) Super HAD color CCD imaging device with approximately 10.3-million gross pixels and 10.1-million effective pixels. More pixels give you more detail and definition when you make big prints or crop in tight on your subject.

BIONZ: The camera is equipped with the BIONZ Imaging Processor for delivers high resolution and fast performance.

Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar Lens: The Vario-Tessar lens is specially produced for very compact cameras. This specialized design allows quick auto-focus, appealing zoom range while still maintaining a compact design. The lens has a 4x optical zoom and a focal length of 6.18mm to 24.7mm, equivalent to 35mm to 140mm in 35mm photography. It has a maximum aperture range of F3.5(W) to F4.6(T).

LCD Screen: The DSC-T77 has a 3" color LCD screen with 230,400 pixels (resolution 960 x 240). The LCD screen allows you to view an image before taking a picture and replay images that have been stored in memory. For best viewing, you can adjust the brightness of the LCD monitor when using the camera outdoors.

Image Size: When recording digital still images, the DSC-T77 allows you to choose from seven image sizes. When recording moving images, you can choose from three different image sizes and frame rates. The options include:

Still Image Size Resolution Typical Use
10M 3648 x 2736 Up to A3+ print/11" x 17" print
3:2*(8M) 3648 x 2432 Match 3:2 print
5M 2592 x 1944 Up to A4/8.5"x11" print
3M 2048 x 1536 Up to 5"x7" or 4"x6" print
VGA 640 x 480 For e-mail attachments
16:9 (HDTV) 3648 x 2056 (7M) Display on 16:9 HDTV
1920 x 1080 (2M)
Moving Image Size Frames/Second
640 x 480 Fine Approx 30 fps Display on TV (high quality)
640 x 480 Std Approx 17 fps Display on TV (standard)
320 x 240 Approx 8 fps For e-mail

*This option records images in a horizontal to vertical proportion of 3:2 to match the size of the print paper used.

Digital Zoom: The camera has a Precision Digital Zoom of 2x. Combined with the 4x optical zoom, the maximum total zoom is 8x.

Function Guide: An on-screen function guide text/icon display makes it easy to learn the camera functions that give you greater creative freedom to adjust photo settings. The function guide can be turned on or off as desired.

Face Detection: When activated, the Face Detection function detects the faces of up to eight subjects and adjusts the focus, strobe, exposure, white balance, and pre-strobe for red-eye reduction. Face Detection helps make skin tones look more natural and eliminates harsh facial glare.

Smile Shutter Mode: The DSC-T77 helps you capture more smiles by shooting automatically when your subject laughs, smiles, even grins. You select the person to watch and the expression to catch, the Face Detection system and intelligent Smile Shutter algorithm do the rest.

Anti-Blink Function: The camera's Anti-Blink function captures two images, and records only the photo with less squinting. It works automatically in the Portrait mode. If a blink is detected in other shooting modes, a warning will be displayed after you take the shot.

Double Anti-Blur Solution: With Optical SteadyShot and high sensitivity (up to ISO3200), the DSC-T77 compensates for shaky hands, minimizes blur, brightens images, and allows flash-free shooting to preserve the mood.

Auto Focus Mode: You can choose from the following AF modes:

  • Multi-Point AF: focuses on points throughout the frame, useful when your subject is not centered
  • Center AF: focuses on the center of the frame, useful for shooting stationary subjects
  • Spot AF: focuses on the area of the frame you specify, allows for small subject or narrow focus area
  • Focus Presets: Preset focus distances include 1 meter, 3 meters, 7 meters, and infinity.

AF Illuminator: The AF (auto focus) Illuminator briefly provides fill light to focus more easily on a subject in dark surroundings. The AF Illuminator is most useful within approximately 8' of the subject.

AE/AF Lock: If you have difficulty focusing on an off-center subject, you can set and lock the focus and exposure on the subject by pressing the shutter button halfway with the subject in the AF rangefinder, then recompose the shot and press the shutter button fully to take the picture.

Macro/Close Focus: For close-ups of small objects such as flowers and insects, this camera has macro focus capability and a close focus function. With the zoom set all the way to wide, the camera can focus on objects as close as 7-7/8" from the lens in Macro mode and as close as 13/32" in the Close Focus mode.

Auto Power-Off: If you do not operate the camera for approximately 3 minutes, it will turn off automatically to conserve battery power.

Date and Time: Each time you take a picture, the camera records the date and time. The date and time are not superimposed on the picture, instead saved in a data file along with the image.

Battery Information: The DSC-T77 comes with the NP-BD1 lithium-ion rechargeable battery and BC-CSD battery charger. This battery takes approximately 3 hours 40 minutes to fully charge. It can reach a "practical charge" in approximately 2 hours 40 minutes.

Battery Performance: Under normal operating conditions the battery has the following capacity:

Function Number of Images Approximate Time
Record Still Images Approximately 220 110 minutes
Playback Still Images Approximately 4600 230 minutes
Recording Images

Shooting Modes: The camera features the following shooting modes:

  • Auto Adjustment: camera automatically adjusts the focus, exposure and white balance
  • Program Auto: you can change the focus, metering mode, ISO, and EV settings
  • Scene Selection Modes: choose from the following Scene Selection modes:
    • High Sensitivity: shoot without flash in low light, reducing blur
    • Landscape: focuses only on a distant subject, such as a landscape
    • Soft Snap: capture subject with a softened background
    • Twilight Portrait: shooting people with a dark background
    • Twilight: used for shooting a distant subject at night
    • Gourmet: shoots food arrangements in delicious color
    • Beach: for shooting at seaside or the lakeside
    • Snow: use with a white background
    • Fireworks: record fireworks against a night sky
    • Underwater: shoots underwater in natural colors (when a waterproof case is used)
    • Hi-Speed Shutter: shoot moving subjects outdoors or in other bright places
  • Smile Shutter: shutter released automatically when the camera detects a smile (3 levels)
  • Scene Recognition: camera automatically detects the shooting conditions before taking the shot

Color Mode: When desired, you can select one of the following picture effects:

  • Normal: normal color tones
  • Vivid: bright and deep color
  • Sepia: sepia-toned like an old photograph
  • B & W: in black and white

Movies: Besides recording still images, you can also record moving images with sound. There are three image sizes are available:

  • 640 Fine: 640 x 480 @ approximately 30 frames per second (using Memory Stick PRO Duo only)
  • 640 Standard: 640 x 480 @ approximately 17 frames per second
  • 320: 320 x 240 @ approximately 8 frames per second

Flash Modes: The flash can be set to Flash Auto, Flash On, Slow Synchro, or Flash Off. In Flash Auto mode, the flash automatically strobes when the surroundings are dark. When the flash is set to Flash On, it strobes with every shot. In Slow Synchro, the flash is used regardless of the amount of ambient light, but the shutter speed is slower under dark conditions, allowing you to clearly shoot a background that is out of the flash-lit area. In addition, this camera has a "red-eye reduction" setting, which causes the flash to pre-strobe before shooting to reduce the red-eye phenomenon. The red-eye feature also has an automatic setting, engaging when the camera detects a face in the frame.

Flash Range: The recommended distance using the flash is 3-1/4" to 9' 10-1/8" with the zoom set to wide, and 1' 7-3/4" to 7' 10-1/2" with the zoom set to telephoto.

High Sensitivity Mode: For better shots in low light, or when you can't use flash, you can set the camera to the high sensitivity mode of ISO 3200. The ISO speed can be also be set to Auto, 80, 100, 200, 400, 800, or 1600. When shooting under dark conditions or shooting a fast-moving subject, you should use a high number setting. When recording high-quality images, use a low number setting.

Metering Modes: You can select Center-weighted or Multi-pattern Metering. Center-weighted metering measures the center of the image and determines the exposure based on the brightness of the subject. When multi-pattern metering is used, the image is divided into multiple regions and metering is performed in each region. The camera judges the subject position and background brightness, and determines a well-balanced exposure.

White Balance: When the white balance is set to auto, the white balance is set automatically in response to the condition of the subject, and the overall color balance is adjusted. When shooting under special lighting conditions, you can select the settings manually. When using flash, you can select the flash white balance mode. In addition to Auto and Flash, the white balance can be set to Incandescent, Fluorescent 1 (white fluorescent), Fluorescent 2 (natural white fluorescent), Fluorescent 3 (day white fluorescent), Daylight, and Cloudy.

Exposure Adjustment: Besides auto exposure, you can adjust the exposure from +2.0EV to -2.0EV in 1/3 stop increments.
