Major zoom and much more! Fujifilm's FinePix S5100 gets attention with its solid build, versatile controls, and serious telephoto power. And it makes true believers when folks see the beautiful photos it delivers, again and again!

The S5100 boasts a 10X optical zoom lens, with a 35mm equivalent of 37-370mm. Why would you want that much zooming ability? Well, you can use a telephoto lens to snap a crisp close-up of a Great Blue Heron far off on a marsh's edge; you can zoom past the tourists to get a more detailed shot of Stonehenge; or you can simply zero in on a baby's smile from across the room, for the kind of photo that you'll treasure for years.

There's more to the S5100 than mere zoom, however. You'll love the glowing, accurate photos this camera produces. And you get all kinds of manual controls and convenient presets. Use Programmed Auto Exposure modes for quick adjustment in complex shooting situations, or adjust exposure manually when you want to get creative. You can set sensitivity to 80, 100, 200, and 400 ISO, to simulate shooting with different film speeds. Movie mode lets you capture surprisingly crisp movie clips with sound — a fun way to hold onto special memories. The included lens adapter ring promises versatility; you can add optional telephoto or wide-angle converter lenses. And the SLR-style design makes this camera a pleasure to hold and use.

Optics: The FinePix S5100 is equipped with a Fujinon lens with a 10x optical zoom. The lens has an aperture of F2.8 to F8 at wide-angle and F3.1 to F9 at telephoto.

Lens Adapter Ring: This unit is equipped with a lens adapter ring which not only protects the lens and blocks unwanted external light, but is threaded to allow optional conversion lenses to be attached. Dimensions: Diameter=2.391", Height=1.448", Filter Diameter with adapter ring: 55mm.

Zoom: The digital zoom becomes active as the zoom value exceeds 10x, the value of the optical zoom. The maximum zoom scale varies as the image quality setting changes. When the image quality is set to 4M (2272 x 1704), the digital zoom cannot be used and the maximum zoom value is 10x. The remaining maximum digital zoom settings are:

CCD-RAW: Setting the camera to CCD-RAW disables the signal processing functions of the camera (reconstituting the data received from the CCD as an image). Because of this, the images shot in CCD-RAW must be rebuilt on a computer, using the RAW FILE CONVERTER LE application bundled with the supplied FinePix Viewer software.

Shooting Modes: Using the top mounted Mode Dial, you can set the camera to suit your level and style of photography. The shooting mode choices include:

    • Auto Mode: The Auto Mode is a simple point-and-shoot mode in which the exposure value and white balance are controlled by the camera. This mode is recommended for first-time users of digital cameras.
    • Scene Position: The following modes are preset to match the selected photo setting:
      • Portrait: For shooting portraits--skin tones are shown beautifully and the overall tone is soft.
      • Landscape: For shooting scenery in daylight--provides crisp, clear shots of scenery such as buildings and mountains.
      • Sports: For shooting sporting events--gives priority to faster shutter speeds.
      • Night Scene: For evening and night scenes--allows you to take shots where priority is given to slow shutter speeds of up to 3 seconds. To prevent camera shake, a tripod is recommended.
    • Programmed Auto: An automatic mode to specify the settings except for the shutter speed and aperture setting.
    • Shutter Priority Auto: An automatic mode to set the shutter speed--for freezing a moving subject (fast shutter) or convey the impression of movement (slow shutter).
    • Aperture Priority Auto: An automatic mode to set the aperture--to have the background out of focus (large aperture) or have both near and far objects in focus (small aperture).
    • Manual Mode: The Manual Mode lets you specify any shutter speed and aperture settings.
    • Movie Mode: You can make movies at a rate of 30 frames per second with monaural sound. The images are recorded at 640 x 480 pixels or 320 x 240 pixels. There is no maximum set recording time; the camera will record continuously until the remaining memory in the xD Memory card is used. You must zoom before you begin to record. The maximum zoom scale is 10x. Focal range is 2 feet to infinity (telephoto).

Photometry (Metering): The Finepix S5100 gives you three methods of metering:

    • Multi (Pattern): The camera assesses the scene through the lens (TTL), using 64 different zones within the frame, and chooses the optimum exposure; useful for everyday photography.
    • Spot: Light metering is optimized for the center of the image; useful for subjects with strongly contrasting light and dark areas where you want to achieve the correct exposure for a particular feature.
    • Average: An average metering value over the entire frame is used; effective for shots of people wearing black or white clothing, or shots of scenery.

Note: Spot and Average metering are available in Programmed Auto, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, and Manual shooting modes.

Continuous Shooting: The FinePix S5100 offers four continuous shooting modes:

    • Top 3-frame: Shoots up to 3 frames at a maximum speed of 3 frames per second.
    • Auto Bracketing: Shoots same image 3 times, each with different exposure settings: correctly exposed, over exposed, and under exposed. Brackets can be set to ?1/3EV, ?2/3EV or ?1EV.
    • Final 3-frame: Shoots continuously up to 40 frames at a maximum of 3 frames per second, and records the last 3 frames. If fewer than 40 frames are shot, the camera records the last 3 frames.
    • Long Period: You can take up to 40 continuous shots at maximum 1.6 frames per second.

Focus Modes: The FinePix S5100 features a Focus mode selector on the top left side of the camera which allows you to select Standard Auto Focus, Continuous Auto Focus, or Manual Focus:

    • Standard AF: The camera focuses automatically when the shutter button is pressed halfway.

    • Continuous AF: Automatic focus is constant; helpful when shooting pictures of a moving subject. (Battery consumption is greatly increased.)

    • Manual Focus: You can manually focus on a subject by holding the +/- button down while pressing "T" or "W" to bring the subject into focus.

AutoFocus Methods: When autofocus is used, you can select from three AF methods:

    • Area: The camera changes the focusing position on the screen. Use when composing on a tripod and changing the focusing position.
    • Multi: The camera recognizes any strongly contrasting subject near the center of the screen and displays the AF frame over the subject in focus.
    • Center: The camera focuses on the center of the screen.

AF/AE Lock: When the subject of your photo does not appear within the AF frame, it is difficult for the camera to focus properly. You can use the AF/AE (auto focus/auto exposure) feature to focus the picture correctly. You can place your subject within the AF frame, lock the focus and exposure by pressing the shutter button halfway, then recompose and take the picture in focus.

FinePix Color: You can select one of three settings:

    • Standard: The contrast and color saturation are set to standard.
    • Chrome: The contrast and color saturation are set to high, allowing you to take more vivid shots of scenery (blue sky, greenery) and flowers.
    • B&W: The setting converts the colors in the photographed image to black and white.

White Balance: White balance is used to preserve natural colors under different types of lighting. You can select Auto, Custom, Outdoors, Shade, "Daylight" fluorescent lamps, "Warm White" fluorescent lamps, "Cool White" fluorescent lamps, and Incandescent light.

Exposure Compensation: You can alter the exposure from the value suggested by the camera, making pictures brighter or darker. You can adjust the exposure a total of 13 steps from -2.1 to +1.5 EV in 13 steps in 0.3 EV increments.

ISO Sensitivity: The ISO Sensitivity can be automatically or manually set. In addition to Auto, you can set the sensitivity to 80, 100, 200, or 400. When Auto is selected, the camera selects the best sensitivity setting for the subject's brightness. You can set the sensitivity to a higher setting to allow you to take pictures in darker locations.

Macro: For close-up photography, the FinePix S5100 offers a Macro mode mode. The Macro mode allows you to focus on subjects between 3.9 inches and 2 feet in Wide-angle, and 3 feet and 6.6 feet in telephoto. The effective flash range in the Macro mode is 1 to 6.6 feet.

Flash Modes: The FinePix S5100 has a built-in pop-up flash with an effective range of 1' to 13.8' (Wide) and 2.6' to 12.5' (Tele). You can choose from the following flash modes:

    • Auto: flash fires automatically as required by the shooting conditions

    • Red-eye reduction: flash fires a pre-flash just before the picture is taken and fires again to take the actual picture.

    • Forced Flash: flash will fire whenever a picture is taken

    • Red-eye reduction + Slow Synchro: pre-flash for reducing red-eye effect, plus auto flash with slow shutter speeds

    • Slow Synchro: auto flash combined with slow shutter speeds (tripod recommended) for taking pictures at night when you want to show a nighttime backdrop.

    • Suppressed Flash: Pressing the flash down turns off the flash so it will not fire, even when lighting is poor. The selected white balance function operates so natural colors are captured.

Flash Brightness Adjustment: In the Manual shooting mode, you can adjust the amount of light emitted by the flash to suit the conditions or to achieve a desired effect. The flash brightness levels can be set between -2/3 EV to +2/3 EV in 5 levels in 1/3 EV increments.

Voice Memos: Voice memos of up to 30 seconds can be added to still images. When recorded voice memos are being played back, you can pause/resume, stop, or fast forward/rewind.

Viewing Images: Images can be manually played back one-at-a-time, or multi-frame (9 "thumbnail" images). With Auto Play, the images are played one-by-one at a selectable interval with different types of image transitions to choose from.

Playback Zoom: You can enlarge a still image according to the image quality (size). Images shot in 4M (2272 x 1704) can be enlarged up to a maximum of approximately 14.2x, 2M (1600 x 1200) enlarged to approximately 10x, 1M (1280 x 960) enlarged to approximately 8x, and 0.3M (640 x 480) enlarged to approximately 4x. This function is useful for checking the focus of shots you have taken.

Trimming: You can save a cropped image as a new file. After selecting an image, you can zoom in or out and pan left or right to frame the new image. The new file can be saved as a 2M, 1M, or 0.3M image.

Erase/Protect: In the camera's playback menu, you can choose to erase images or protect images from accidental erasure. If you wish to erase unwanted images, you can choose to erase them one at a time or erase all unprotected images. To prevent images from being accidentally erased, you can choose to protect a single image, protect all images, or reset all images to remove protection from all of the files.

PictBridge Compatible: The FinePix S5100 allows you to print directly to a PictBridge-compatible printer of any brand via USB cable. You do not have to download pictures to a computer before printing.

Printing Pictures: Using DPOF (Digital Print Order Form), you can designate which images to print, and whether to print them with or without date. Pictures can be printed as followed:

    • Printer or Photo Lab: insert the memory card into a compatible printer, or take the memory card to a digital photo lab.
    • Direct Print: connect a PictBridge-compatible printer via USB cable and print images directly.
    • Transferring to Computer: transfer the images to a computer before printing them

Power Requirements: The FinePix S5100 is equipped with 4 "AA" alkaline batteries. The supplied batteries provide power for recording approximately 200 frames to an xD-Picture Card with the LCD monitor on. Optional Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) rechargeable "AA"-sized batteries can also be used.

AC Adapter: The optional AC-5V AC power adapter allows you to operate the camera on household current.

Power Save Function: When the camera is operated on battery power, the Power Save function will cause the camera to enter a "sleep" mode if it is not used for approximately 60 seconds. While in the sleep mode, the camera can be quickly brought back to full operational power by pressing the shutter button halfway. Once in the sleep mode, if the camera is left unused for a further 2 minutes or 5 minutes (as set in the menu), the camera is automatically turned off.
