About the Fujifilm FinePix F700

Julie Govan
Talk about getting a lot for a little! The remarkably sleek and well-priced F700 pairs 6-megapixel recording with Fujifilm's exclusive Super CCD SR technology. The result is crisp, brilliant photos with ultra-high resolution, and exceptional sensitivity when it comes to rendering shadow and detail. That's key when it comes to making large prints, or cropping out sections of a photo and magnifying them!

And that's not all. You also get useful features like 3X optical zoom, movie mode with sound, and exposure, focus, and sensitivity control. Continuous autofocus mode is great when you're shooting in-action candids at a gathering — just frame the shot you want, point, and shoot. You don't need to depress the shutter to get the camera to focus, because it's been intelligently assessing the scene and focusing on it all along! For convenience's sake, you get a Photo Mode button, for quick access to shooting menus — switch from color to black-and-white in a moment — and a handy dial for manual control of exposure, white balance, and sensitivity. Another major perk is the supplied picture cradle, for easy, drop-in connection to a USB-capable PC. It also handles battery charging. Nice job, Fujifilm!

    Features

LCD Monitor: The Fujifilm FinePix F700 has a 1.8" CG silicon TFT LCD monitor featuring approximately 134,000 pixels and a 10-level brightness adjustment. The LCD monitor has nearly 100% horizontal and vertical coverage in the shooting mode.

Viewfinder: In addition to the LCD monitor, the camera has a real-image optical viewfinder with approximately 80% horizontal and vertical coverage. The viewfinder should be used when you want to save power, or when bright ambient light makes it difficult to see the LCD monitor.

Optics: The FinePix F700 is equipped with a Super EBC Fujinon lens with 3x zoom.

Zoom: Coupled with the 2.2x digital zoom, the camera has a total zoom of 6.6x.

4th Generation Super CCD SR: Fujifilm's new Super CCD SR technology was developed specifically to deliver wider dynamic range than previous CCD imagers. Negative film employs both low-sensitivity and high-sensitivity layers for each of the primary RGB colors. The Super CCD SR mimics this structure by using a combination of low-sensitivity R-pixels and high-sensitivity S-pixels, employing extremely precise design and construction for each pixel. The Super CCD SR technology achieves approximately 4 times greater dynamic range than the preceding 3rd-generation Super CCDs. In addition, this new CCD gives you improved resolution, greater sensitivity, higher signal-to-noise ratio, and enhance color purity.

    CCD Imager: The FinePix F700 features a 1/1.7-inch Super CCD SR imager with 6.7-million total pixels (3.35-million R-pixels and 3.35-million S-pixels) and 6.2-million effective pixels (3.1-million R-pixels and 3.1-million S-pixels).

Recording Media: Images are recorded onto xD-Picture cards. A 16MB xD-Picture card is supplied.

Image Quality: The FinePix F700 records still images in JPEG format and CCD-RAW, and movies in AVI format (Motion JPEG) with monaural WAV audio. You have a choice of 5 still image size options and 2 movie size options:

CCD-RAW: Setting the camera to CCD-RAW disables the signal processing functions of the camera (reconstituting the data received from the CCD as an image). Because of this, the images shot in CCD-RAW must be rebuilt on a computer, with the supplied FinePix Viewer software installed.

Shooting Modes: Using the top-mounted rotary mode dial, you can set the camera to suit your level and style of photography. The shooting mode choices include:

    • Auto Mode: The Auto Mode is a simple point-and-shoot mode in which the majority of camera settings are controlled by the camera. This mode is recommended for first-time users of digital cameras. While in the Auto Mode, the following settings can be adjusted: Image Quality (number of recorded pixels), ISO Sensitivity, and FinePix color.
    • Scene Position (SP) Mode: The camera gives you the option of 4 Scene Modes. The camera settings are automatically adjusted to suit the selected scene. The Scene Position Modes include:
      • Portrait: For shooting portraits--skin tones are shown beautifully and the overall tone is soft.
      • Landscape: For shooting scenery in daylight--provides crisp, clear shots of scenery such as buildings and mountains.
      • Sports: For shooting sporting events--gives priority to faster shutter speeds.
      • Night Scene: For evening and night scenes--allows you to take shots where priority is given to slow shutter speeds of up to 3 seconds. To prevent camera shake, a tripod is recommended.
    • Programmed Auto Mode: The Programmed Auto Mode is an automatic mode that allows you to specify any of the settings other than the shutter speed and aperture. This allows you to take shots relatively simply in the same way as the Shutter-priority Auto and Aperture-priority Auto modes. While in the Programmed Auto mode, you can activate the Program Shift feature which lets you change the combination of shutter speed and aperture without changing the exposure setting.
    • Shutter-priority Auto: This is an automatic mode that allows you to set the shutter speed and the camera automatically sets the aperture for the proper exposure. You can use this mode for shot where you want to freeze a moving subject (fast shutter speed) or convey the impression of movement (slow shutter speed). You can set the shutter speed between 3 seconds and 1/1000 second in 1/3 EV steps.
    • Aperture-priority Auto: This is an automatic mode that allows you to set the aperture and the camera automatically sets the shutter speed for the proper exposure. You can use this mode for shots where you want to have the background out of focus (large aperture) or have both near and far objects in focus (small aperture). You can set the aperture from F2.8 to F8 in 1/3 EV steps (wide angle).
    • Manual Mode: The Manual Mode allows you set any shutter speed and aperture setting. You can set the shutter speed between 3 seconds and 1/1000 second in 1/3 EV steps and you can set the aperture from F2.8 to F8 in 1/3 EV steps (wide angle).
    • Movie Mode: Make movies at a rate of 30 frames per second with sound. You can select "640" (640 x 480) or "320" (320 x 240). The recording time is limited to the amount of available memory in the xD-Picture card. There is no maximum clip length.

ISO Sensitivity: When in the Auto Shooting Mode, you can set the camera's ISO sensitivity to Auto, 400, 800 or 1600. When in the Scene Position, Programmed Auto, Shutter-priority, Aperture-priority, or Manual shooting modes, you can set the camera's ISO sensitivity to 200, 400, 800 or 1600. The Auto ISO setting is equivalent to 160 to 400 (with LCD on and flash off). You can use any sensitivity with any of the Still Image Quality (image size) settings, with the exception of ISO 1600. When the "high-sensitivity" setting (ISO 1600) is selected, the quality is automatically set to 1M (1280 x 960).

FinePix Color: The FinePix Color settings allows you to control the color saturation of the recorded image. The camera gives you the following choices:

    • Standard: for portraits and everyday use.
    • Chrome: for landscapes and architectural photography
    • Black & White: for dramatic and artistic images

White Balance: White balance is used to preserve natural colors under different types of lighting. The White Balance can be changed when the shooting mode is in the Programmed Auto, Shutter-priority, Aperture-priority, or Manual. You can select Auto, Outdoors, Shade, "Daylight" fluorescent lamps, "Warm White" fluorescent lamps, "Cool White" fluorescent lamps, Incandescent light, and Custom (set by the camera for the specific lighting for the shot).

Exposure Compensation: You can alter the exposure from the value suggested by the camera, making pictures brighter or darker. You can adjust the exposure a total of 13 steps from -2.0 to +2.0 EV in 1/3 EV steps. Exposure compensation is available in the Programmed Auto, Shutter-priority, and Aperture-priority shooting modes only.

Continuous Shooting: You can choose one of four continuous shooting modes:

    • Top 5-frame: You can shoot up to 5 frames at intervals as short as 0.2 seconds. The photographed images are displayed in sequence and automatically recorded.
    • Auto-Bracketing: This mode automatically shoots 3 continuous frames that bracket the selected exposure setting so that one is correctly exposed, one is overexposed and one is underexposed.
    • Final 5-frame: This mode allows you to release the shutter up to 25 times at intervals as short as 0.2 seconds, and record the last 5 frames.
    • Long-period: You can take up to 40 continuous shots at intervals as short as 0.6 seconds. In this mode, the image quality is automatically set to 1M (1280 x 960 pixels).

Self-timer: The camera gives you the choice of a 10-second or 2-second self timer.

Auto and Manual Focus: The FinePix F700 offers three auto focus modes, plus manual focus. The auto focus modes include Auto (focuses on the central area), AF center (focuses on the center of the screen), and AF area (lets you change the position on the screen where the camera focuses). When focusing manually, the left and right arrows (on the 4-position ring) are used to move the focus closer or farther away.

Focus Range: The focus range is 2' to infinity in normal mode, and 3.5" to 2.6' in Macro close-up mode.

Continuous Auto-Focus: The camera features a conveniently-located button which activates the continuous auto-focus. This front-mounted "C-AF" button lets you keep moving subjects in focus.

Flash Modes: The FinePix F700 has a built-in flash with a range of 1' to 16' 4" (Wide), 1' to 2.7' (Macro) and 2' to 13' 1"(Tele). You can choose from the following flash modes:

    • Auto: flash fires automatically as required by the shooting conditions

    • Red-eye reduction: flash fires a pre-flash just before the picture is taken and fires again to take the actual picture.

    • Forced Flash: flash will fire whenever a picture is taken

    • Suppressed Flash: flash will not fire, even when lighting is poor (Auto White balance operates so natural colors are captured)

    • Slow Synchro: auto flash combined with slow shutter speeds (tripod recommended)

Flash Brightness Adjustment: The intensity of the flash can be adjusted to suit the photography conditions or to achieve a desired effect. You can adjust the flash in 5 steps from -0.6 EV to +0.6 EV in 0.3 EV increments.

Photometry: In the Auto, Scene Position and Movie modes, light metering is set to "Multi". In the Programmed Auto, Shutter-priority, Aperture-priority and manual modes, you can select one of three Photometry modes for shots where the brightness of the subject and background differ greatly and the light is not metered as desired:

    • Multi (Pattern): light metering where the camera automatically assesses the scene and selects the optimum exposure.
    • Spot: light metering where the exposure is optimized for the center of the image
    • Average: light metering where an average value for the entire image is used.

Voice Memos: You can add voice memos of up to 30 seconds each to still images. The voice memos are recorded in the WAV format. During playback, you can pause/resume, stop, fast-forward and rewind the voice memos.

Viewing Images: Images can be played back one-at-a-time, in fast forward, or multi-frame (9 "thumbnail" images).

Playback Zoom/Trimming: You can enlarge a still image according to the image quality (size). Images shot in 6M (2832 x 2128) can be enlarged a maximum of 18x, 3M (2048 x 1536) enlarged to 13x, 2M (1600 x 1200) enlarged to 10x and 1M (1280 x 960) enlarged to 8x. While zoomed in on an image, you can pan to the left, right, up or down. Trimming the image allows you to save a cropped image as a new image.

Playback Menu: The playback menu contains the following options:

    • Erase: Erases all or only selected frames
    • Protect: Protect selected pictures from accidental deletion
    • AutoPlay: Displays the images in a slide-show. You can select two image transitions and two playback intervals.
    • Voice Memo: Allows you to record a voice memo of up to 30 seconds

Printing Pictures: Using DPOF (Digital Print Order Form), you can designate which images to print, and whether to print them with or without date. Pictures can be printed as followed:

    • Printer or Photo Lab: insert the memory card into a compatible printer, or take the memory card to a digital photo lab.
    • Transferring to Computer: transfer the images to a computer before printing them

Picture Cradle: The camera includes a convenient Picture Cradle which has connections for the AC adapter and a USB-A/V output. The camera docks into the Picture Cradle, enabling you to charge the battery, connect the camera to your computer (using the supplied special USB cable), or connect the camera to your TV (using the supplied A/V cable). Dimensions: Width=2.833", Height=2.321" (4.746" with camera in cradle), Depth=3.464".

Power Requirements: The FinePix F700 is equipped with an NP-40 Lithium Ion rechargeable battery. The supplied battery provides power for shooting approximately 135 frames with the LCD monitor on and approximately 270 shots with the LCD monitor off. A fully depleted battery requires approximately 2 hours to fully recharge.

AC Adapter: The supplied AC-5VW AC adapter allows you to operate the camera on household current and charge the NP-40 battery. The adapter can be plugged into the supplied Picture Cradle, or directly into the camera.

Power Off Function: When the camera is operated on battery power, the Power Off function will automatically turn off the LCD monitor to reduce the drain on the batteries if no operations are performed for 30 seconds. Furthermore, if the camera is left unused for a further period (2 or 5 minutes, as set in the menu), the Power Save function automatically switches the camera off.

    Inputs and Outputs Notes

USB/A-V Output: The FinePix F700 features a single proprietary jack for docking to the Picture cradle or directly connecting either the supplied USB cable or A/V cable. This one output allows you to download your photos to your computer via USB, or view your photos on a TV. Note: The video output is NTSC or PAL compatible.
