About the Fujifilm FinePix E510

Julie Govan
Fujifilm has a knack for making user-friendly cameras which are just packed with features, and the E510 is a great example. This pocket-size FinePix is durable, with a metal faceplate, and compact, with a depth of just 1-7/8". Yet it's got a 5-megapixel CCD and a whole host of features designed for great photos! Check it out.

Photos snapped at the top resolution of 2592 x 1944 are exploding with detail, and are crisp enough to print at sizes much larger than 8" x 10", without pixelation. The wide-angle lens is equivalent to 28-91mm with a 35mm camera, making it simple to capture photos of a beautiful landscape or a large group of people. And unlike many cameras, the E510 sports a bright 2" LCD, for easier framing of shots and reviewing of just-snapped pics.

You also get pretty sophisticated features — especially for a camera you can hold in the palm of your hand. For example, there's aperture and shutter speed priority modes, for more pro-style control over your photography. Three different Color Modes let you choose between normal, vivid, and black-and-white shooting. Finally, the E510 is compatible with Fujifilm's handy CP-FXA10 PictureCradle (not supplied). You can connect the cradle to an AC wall outlet and your computer's USB jack. Then, just place the camera atop the cradle to transfer photos or power up the rechargeable camera battery that comes with the cradle. It's just one more perk!

    Features

LCD Monitor: The Fujifilm FinePix E510 has a 2.0" low temp polysilicon TFT LCD monitor featuring approximately 154,000 pixels and a 10-level brightness adjustment. The monitor provides approximately 96% coverage in the shooting mode.

Viewfinder: In addition to the LCD monitor, the camera has a real-image optical viewfinder with approximately 80% coverage in the shooting mode. You can easily switch between the LCD monitor and viewfinder.

Optics: The FinePix E510 is equipped with a Fujinon lens with a 3.2x optical zoom.

Optional Conversion Lenses: You can attach an optional Wide Conversion Lens (WL-FXE01) or a Tele Conversion Lens (TL-FXE01) to change the focal length of the E510's lens. An AR-FXE01 adapter ring is required to attach either of the conversion lenses, and to mount 43mm diameter commercial available filters. The camera's ring cover must be removed to attach the adapter. Filters cannot be directly attached to the camera without the adapter ring.

Zoom: The digital zoom becomes active as the zoom value exceeds 3.2x, the value of the optical zoom. The maximum zoom scale varies as the image quality setting changes. When the image quality is set to 5M (2592 x 1944), the digital zoom cannot be used and the maximum zoom value is 3.2x. The remaining maximum zoom settings are:

Image Quality Setting Maximum Digital Zoom Scale
    3M

CCD Imager: The 1/2.5" square-pixel CCD imager found in the FinePix E510 features 5.36-million total pixels and 5.2-million effective pixels.

Image Quality: The FinePix E510 records still images in JPEG format and movies in AVI format (Motion JPEG) with monaural audio. You have a choice of 4 still image size options and 2 movie size options. The standard number of frames/recording time per xD-Picture Card, is as follows:

Shooting Modes: Using the top mounted Mode Dial, you can set the camera to suit your level and style of photography. The shooting mode choices include:

    • Auto Mode: The Auto Mode is a simple point-and-shoot mode in which the exposure value and white balance are controlled by the camera. This mode is recommended for first-time users of digital cameras.
    • Scene Position: The following modes are preset to match the selected photo setting:
      • Portrait: For shooting portraits--skin tones are shown beautifully and the overall tone is soft. All flash modes are available.
      • Landscape: For shooting scenery in daylight--provides crisp, clear shots of scenery such as buildings and mountains. No flash is available in this mode.
      • Sports: For shooting sporting events--gives priority to faster shutter speeds. Auto Flash, Suppressed Flash, or Forced Flash are available in this mode.
      • Night Scene: For evening and night scenes--allows you to take shots where priority is given to slow shutter speeds of up to 2 seconds. Available flash modes include Suppressed Flash, Slow-Synchro and Red-eye Reduction + Slow-Synchro. To prevent camera shake, a tripod is recommended.
    • Programmed Auto: An automatic mode to specify the settings except for the shutter speed and aperture setting.
    • Shutter Priority Auto: An automatic mode to set the shutter speed--for freezing a moving subject (fast shutter) or convey the impression of movement (slow shutter).
    • Aperture Priority Auto: An automatic mode to set the aperture--to have the background out of focus (large aperture) or have both near and far objects in focus (small aperture).
    • Manual Mode: The Manual Mode lets you specify the shutter speed and aperture settings.
    • Movie Mode: You can make movies at a rate of 10 frames per second with monaural sound. The images are recorded at 320 x 240 pixels or 160 x 120 pixels. The maximum recording time is 60 seconds at 320 x 240, and 180 seconds at 160 x 120. During movie recording, the lens is fixed at the wide-angle zoom setting, and the zoom can be used up to 3.2x. Focal range is 2 feet to infinity.

Photometry (Metering): The Finepix E510 gives you two methods of metering:

    • Multi (Pattern): The camera assesses the scene through the lens (TTL), using 64 different zones within the frame, and chooses the optimum exposure; useful for everyday photography.
    • Spot: Light metering is optimized for the center of the image; useful for subjects with strongly contrasting light and dark areas where you want to achieve the correct exposure for a particular feature. Spot metering can be used in Programmed Auto, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and Manual shooting modes.

Focusing: The camera uses through the lens (TTL) focusing, offering both automatic and manual focusing methods. When autofocus is used, the camera automatically focuses on the subject within the AF frame when the shutter button is pressed halfway. If you wish to focus manually, you must first switch to manual mode in the menu, then move the focus closer or further using the "Tele" and "Wide" zoom buttons while holding down the "+/-" button. Manual focusing can be used in Programmed Auto, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and Manual shooting modes.

FinePix Color: You can select one of three settings:

    • Standard: The contrast and color saturation are set to standard.
    • Chrome: The contrast and color saturation are set to high, allowing you to take more vivid shots of scenery (blue sky, greenery) and flowers.
    • B&W: The setting converts the colors in the photographed image to black and white.

White Balance: White balance is used to preserve natural colors under different types of lighting. The White Balance is automatically set in the Auto or Scene Positions.  The White Balance can be set by the user when in the Programmed Auto, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, or Manual shooting modes only. You can select Auto, Outdoors, Shade, "Daylight" fluorescent lamps, "Warm White" fluorescent lamps, "Cool White" fluorescent lamps, and Incandescent light.

Exposure Compensation: You can alter the exposure from the value suggested by the camera, making pictures brighter or darker. You can adjust the exposure a total of 13 steps from -2.0 to +2.0 EV in 1/3 EV steps. Exposure compensation is available only in the Programmed Auto, Shutter Priority, and Aperture Priority shooting modes.

ISO Sensitivity: The ISO Sensitivity can be automatically or manually set. In addition to Auto, you can set the sensitivity to 80, 100, 200, or 400. When Auto is selected, the camera selects the best sensitivity setting for the subject's brightness. You can set the sensitivity to a higher setting to allow you to take pictures in darker locations.

Macro: For close-up photography, the FinePix E510 offers a Macro mode and a Super Macro mode. The Macro mode allows you to focus on subjects between 2.6 inches and 2.6 feet. The effective flash range in the Macro mode is 1 to 2.6 feet, and the maximum optical zoom range is 1.4x. The Super Macro mode allows you to focus on subjects between 1 inch and 5.9 inches. Flash and zoom are not available in Super Macro mode.

Flash Modes: The FinePix E510 has a built-in pop-up flash with an effective range of 2' to 13.5' (Wide) and 2' to 6.6' (Tele). You can choose from the following flash modes:

    • Auto: flash fires automatically as required by the shooting conditions

    • Red-eye reduction: flash fires a pre-flash just before the picture is taken and fires again to take the actual picture.

    • Forced Flash: flash will fire whenever a picture is taken

    • Red-eye reduction + Slow Synchro: pre-flash for reducing red-eye effect, plus auto flash with slow shutter speeds

    • Slow Synchro: auto flash combined with slow shutter speeds (tripod recommended) for taking pictures at night when you want to show a nighttime backdrop.

    • Suppressed Flash: Pressing the flash down turns off the flash so it will not fire, even when lighting is poor. Auto White balance operates so natural colors are captured.

Voice Memos: Voice memos of up to 30 seconds can be added to still images. When recorded voice memos are being played back, you can pause/resume, stop, or fast forward/rewind.

Viewing Images: Images can be manually played back one-at-a-time, or multi-frame (9 "thumbnail" images). With Auto Play, the images are played one-by-one at a selectable interval with different types of image transitions to choose from.

Playback Zoom: You can enlarge a still image according to the image quality (size). Images shot in 5M (2592 x 1944) images can be enlarged a maximum of 16.2x, 3M (2048 x 1536) enlarged to 12.8x, 2M (1600 x 1200) enlarged to 8x, and 0.3M (640 x 480) enlarged to 4x. This function is useful for checking the focus of shots you have taken.

Trimming: You can save a cropped image as a new file. After selecting an image, you can zoom in or out and pan left or right to frame the new image. The new file can be saved as a 3M, 2M, or 0.3M image.

Erase/Protect: In the camera's playback menu, you can choose to erase images or protect images from accidental erasure. If you wish to erase unwanted images, you can choose to erase them one at a time or erase all unprotected images. To prevent images from being accidentally erased, you can choose to protect a single image, protect all images, or reset all images to remove protection from all of the files.

Optional PictureCradle: Using the supplied adapter, you can dock the camera to an optional CP-FXA10 PictureCradle. The cradle has connections for USB, AC power and Video. Once docked to the PictureCradle, you can download images to your computer, charge the batteries (if using rechargeable batteries), or playback images on a connected TV. Note: The PictureCradle comes with a rechargeable Ni-MH battery pack and an AC-3V AC power adapter.

PictBridge Compatible: The FinePix E510 allows you to print directly to a PictBridge-compatible printer of any brand via USB cable. You do not have to download pictures to a computer before printing.

Printing Pictures: Using DPOF (Digital Print Order Form), you can designate which images to print, and whether to print them with or without date. Pictures can be printed as followed:

    • Printer or Photo Lab: insert the memory card into a compatible printer, or take the memory card to a digital photo lab.
    • Direct Print: connect a PictBridge-compatible printer via USB cable and print images directly.
    • Transferring to Computer: transfer the images to a computer before printing them

Power Requirements: The FinePix E510 is equipped with 2 "AA" alkaline batteries. The supplied batteries provide power for recording approximately 100 frames to an xD-Picture Card with the LCD monitor on. Optional Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) rechargeable batteries are available from the manufacturer. The NH-10 rechargeable battery can provide power for up to 220 frames.  Other "AA" sized Ni-MH batteries (2300 mAh) can provide power for up to 290 frames. Note: Rechargeable nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) and manganese batteries are not recommended because heat generated from the batteries could damage the camera or cause malfunctions.

AC Adapter: The optional AC-3V AC power adapter allows you to operate the camera on household current.

Power Save Function: When the camera is operated on battery power, the Power Save function will cause the camera to enter a "sleep" mode if it is not used for approximately 60 seconds. While in the sleep mode, the camera can be quickly brought back to full operational power by pressing the shutter button halfway. Once in the sleep mode, if the camera is left unused for a further 2 minutes or 5 minutes (as set in the menu), the camera is automatically turned off.
