Nikon's compact Coolpix P1 teams an 8-megapixel image sensor together with a precision 3.5X optical zoom lens for a powerful picture taking combination. You'll capture large, detailed images with plenty of room for cropping and making razor-sharp prints. The P1's big, bright 2-1/2" LCD screen makes framing and reviewing your shots easier. But what really sets this camera apart is its ability to transfer all those great pictures wirelessly.

The P1 has built-in Wi-Fi capability, a technology that enables you to shoot and transmit your photos to a compatible wireless computer network without the need for cables. Load Nikon's versatile photo software on your PC, and you can download all your pictures at once or transfer each image as you shoot, using your laptop or desktop computer for virtually unlimited photo storage. Take snapshots at parties or family gatherings and display them as a slide show — your new photos join the presentation automatically, as you shoot. You can even print pictures wirelessly on a photo printer connected to your network.

And this camera can do so much more. Tired of red-eye? The P1 can fix it before you even see it. This cam also take several shots of the same subject, and save only the best one — perfect for snapping photos of moving subjects. And Nikon's special Face Priority Mode makes it easy to shoot clear, in-focus portraits of your favorite people. Store your shots on optional Secure Digital® cards — but if you're ever caught without one, you can capture the moment on the camera's handy 32MB built-in memory.

Time Lapse Movie: You can record a flower opening or a butterfly emerging from a cocoon using the Time Lapse Movie option. The camera takes still images at a selected interval until 1800 frames has been recorded or the memory card is full. You can choose intervals of 30 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, or 60 minutes. The Time Lapse Movie is played back at 30 frames per second (without sound) with a frame size of 640 x 480.

Mode Dial: Using the top-mounted rotary mode dial, you can set the camera to suit your level and style of photography, plus change important camera settings. The mode choices include:

  • Auto Mode: The Auto Mode is a simple point-and-shoot mode in which the majority of camera settings are controlled by the camera. This mode is recommended for first-time users of digital cameras.
  • "P A" Modes:
    • Programmed Auto Mode:  The camera sets the shutter speed and aperture for optimal exposure. "Flexible program" can be used to select additional combinations of shutter speed and aperture that will produce the same exposure.
    • Aperture Priority Mode: You can choose the aperture setting (10 step control) and the camera sets the shutter speed for best results.
  • Scene Modes: The camera gives you the option of 16 Scene Modes. The camera settings are automatically adjusted to suit the selected scene. In the Advanced Shooting mode, you can select one of three effects (including "Normal") for 11 of the 16 scenes. The Scene Modes include:
    • Portrait (Face AF): Useful for photographing portraits of up to 3 people from the waist up. The camera recognizes human faces and focuses on the subject's face.
    • Portrait: Useful for general photographing of portraits. The main subject stands out clearly while the background details are softened.
    • Party/Indoor: Shots include details of the background behind the main subject, or to capture the effects of candlelight and other indoor background lighting
    • Night Portrait: For shots that provide natural balance between the main subject and the background when shooting portraits under low light.
    • Landscape: For vivid landscape shots that enhance outlines, colors, and contrast in such subjects as forests and skyscrapers.
    • Panorama Assist: Use to take a series of photographs that you will later join to form a single panoramic scene
    • Night Landscape: A slow shutter speed is used to produce stunning night landscapes.
    • Beach/Snow: Vividly captures the brightness of subjects such as snow fields, beaches or sunlit expanses of water
    • Sunset: Preserves deep hues seen in sunsets and sunrises
    • Dusk/Dawn: Preserves the colors seen in the weak natural light before sunrise and after sunset
    • Fireworks Show: Slow shutter speeds are used to capture the expanding burst of light from fireworks
    • Back Light: Use when light is coming from behind your subject or when your subject is in the shade but the background is brightly lit
    • Close Up: Used to capture vivid colors in close-up shots of flowers, insects and other small objects, with the background artistically blurred
    • Museum: Use indoors where flash photography is prohibited or in other settings in which you do not want to use flash
    • Copy: Provides clear pictures of text or drawings on a white board, business card or in other printed matter
    • Sports: A fast shutter speed freezes motion for dynamic sports shots.
  • Movie Mode: Make movies with sound. You can select TV Movie 640 (640 x 480) at 30 or 15 frames per second (fps), Small Size 320 (320 x 240) at 15 fps, or Smaller Size 160 (160 x 120) at 15 fps. You can also select Sepia Movie 320 (shoot Sepia-colored 320 x 240 frames @ 5 fps), B & W Movie 320 (shoot black & white 320 x 240 frames @ 15 fps), or Time Lapse Movie (see above).

    • Auto Transfer: choose whether or not to set the Transfer Marking option to the picture taken
    • Reset All: reset camera settings to their default values
    • Firmware Version: displays the current firmware version
  • Image Size/Quality: Select the image size and image quality for the images.
  • ISO: Select the ISO sensitivity for the camera from Auto, 50, 100, 200, or 400.
  • White Balance: Set the White Balance to Auto, Direct Sunlight, Incandescent, Fluorescent (FL1/FL2), Cloudy, Shade, or Speedlight. You can also choose Preset White Balance and use a gray object as a reference to set the white balance.

AutoFocus: The Coolpix P1 features auto focusing with an AF Assist illuminator. If lighting is poor, the built-in AF assist illuminator will light when the shutter release is pressed halfway, allowing the camera to focus even when the subject is poorly lit. The lamp has a range of 1' 8" to 4' 7".

AF Area Mode: In the "Auto" mode, the camera automatically selects one of the nine focus areas containing the subject closest to the camera. In the "Manual" mode, the user selects an area from 99 focus areas manually using the multi-selector. In the "Center" mode, the area in the center of the frame is used. This mode can be combined with AF Lock to focus on off-center subjects.

Focus Range: The focus range is 1'-8" to infinity in normal mode and 1.6" to infinity in Macro close-up mode.

Exposure Compensation: You can alter the exposure from the value suggested by the camera, making pictures brighter or darker. You can adjust the exposure from -2.0 to +2.0 EV in 1/3 steps.

Continuous Shooting: You can choose one of the following continuous shooting modes:

  • Single: The camera records one picture each time the shutter release button is pressed.
  • Continuous H: The camera takes pictures continuously while the shutter release is held down. Up to 5 pictures can be recorded at up to 2.3 frames per second.
  • Continuous L: The camera takes pictures continuously while the shutter release is held down. Up to 19 pictures can be recorded at up to 2 frames per second.
  • Multi-Shot 16: Each time the shutter release button is pressed, the camera takes 16 consecutive "thumbnail" images at a rate of about 1.7 frames per second, and arranges them into 4 rows of 4 images in a single frame measuring 3264 x 2448 pixels.
  • Ultra HS: While the shutter-release button is pressed, the camera records up to 100 pictures at up to 30 frames per second. Images are automatically recorded at 640 x 480 in Normal compression.
  • 5-Shot Buffer: While the shutter-release button in pressed and held, images are recorded at a rate of about 1 frame per second. When the shutter button is released, continuous shooting will stop, and only the last five images recorded will be save to the memory or memory card.

Best Shot Selector: The BSS is recommended for situations in which inadvertent camera movement can produce blurred pictures, or when parts of the image are prone to under- or over-exposure. When BSS is on, the camera takes shots while the shutter-release button is pressed, to a maximum of ten. The images are compared and the sharpest picture is saved to the memory or memory card.

Flash Modes: The Coolpix P1 has a built-in Speedlite flash with a range of 1' 8" to 12' 6" (W) and 1' 8" to 6' 7"(T). You can choose from the following flash modes:

  • Auto: flash fires automatically when lighting is poor

  • Auto with Red-eye Reduction: pre-flash fires before main flash to reduce red-eye effect

  • Flash Cancel: flash will not fire, even when lighting is poor

  • Anytime Flash (fill flash): flash will fire whenever a picture is taken

  • Slow Sync: auto flash combined with slow shutter speeds

  • Rear Curtain Sync: shutter speed slows and flash fires just before the shutter closes

In-Camera Red-Eye Fix: If the camera detects red-eye after the pre-flash has fired, advanced red-eye reduction processing is used to further reduce red-eye, slightly increasing the time required before the next picture can be taken.

Metering: The Coolpix P1 offers four metering methods:

  • Matrix: a 256-segment matrix metering method, comparing measurements from multiple areas of the frame with a library of typical compositions to produce optimal exposure for the entire image.
  • Center-Weighted: Used for portraits, the center-weighted method adjusts the exposure according to the lighting at the center of the frame, but still preserves background details.
  • Spot: The camera measures light in an area shown by a circle in the center of the monitor to ensure the subject in the metering target is correctly exposed even when background is much brighter or darker.
  • Spot AF Area: Links spot metering to active focus area when auto or manual focus area selection is in effect.

Playback Menu: The playback menu contains the following options:

  • List By Date: All pictures taken on the same date are highlighted, allowing you to perform any of five functions to the pictures simultaneously. You can apply D-Lighting, Set all pictures for printing, Delete, Mark all pictures for transfer, or perform Small Pic to all images.
  • D-Lighting: D-Lighting can be used to brighten dark or backlit subjects. While playing back an image, you can select the D-Lighting function, apply it, and save the corrected image without harming the properly exposed areas of the image.
  • Print Set: Select pictures for printing on a DPOF-compatible devices, specify number of copies and information to be included on each print.
  • Slide Show: View pictures in the internal memory or on the memory card in an automatic slide show with about three seconds between pictures. Maximum slide show duration is 30 minutes.
  • Delete: Delete all or selected pictures
  • Protect: Protect selected pictures from accidental deletion
  • Transfer Marking: Mark all or selected pictures for transferring to a computer.
  • Hide Image: You can hide selected pictures when creating a slide show or showing pictures to an audience.
  • Small Pic: Create a small copy of a picture. You can choose the size of the new picture.
  • Copy: Transfer images from internal memory to memory card or vice versa

Thumbnail Playback: During playback, you can view multiple thumbnail images (4, 9, or 16) at a time. While these "contact sheets" are displayed, you can use the multi-selector to highlight individual pictures. Highlighted pictures can be deleted, if desired.

Playback Zoom: During playback, you can press the "T" (telephoto) button once to get a Quick Playback Zoom of 3x normal size. From there you can zoom between 1.2x and 6x in 0.2x increments, and from 6x to 10x in 1.0x increments. Once the image is zoomed, you can use the multi-selector to scroll around to non-visible portions of the image. You can record a new picture of the cropped image by pressing the shutter button.

Voice Memos: Using the camera's microphone, you can record a voice memo during full-screen playback. Voice memos are recorded as long as the shutter release is held down, to a maximum length of 20 seconds.

Printing Pictures: You can print pictures stored in the internal memory or on the memory card by using the Print Set option in the playback menu. Using DPOF (Digital Print Order Form), you can designate which images to print, and how many copies to print. Pictures can be printed as followed:

  • Printer or Photo Lab: insert the memory card into a printer, or take the memory card to a digital photo lab. Note: images stored in the internal memory need to be transferred to a memory card prior to printing
  • PictBridge-compatible Printer: connect the camera to a PictBridge-compatible printer via USB cable or wireless transfer
  • Transferring to Computer: transfer the images to a computer before printing them via USB or wireless transfer

Power Requirements: The Coolpix P1 is powered by the supplied EN-EL8 battery (3.7 volts/7300 mAh). For extended operation and wireless transfer, it is recommended that you power the camera with the optional EH-62C AC adapter.

Auto Off: When the camera is operated on battery power, the Auto Off mode will automatically turn off the monitor to reduce the drain on the batteries if no operations are performed for the length of time specified in the Auto Off menu. The time limit for the Auto Off mode can be set to 30 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes or 30 minutes. When powered by an optional AC adapter, the camera will enter standby mode if no operations are performed for 30 minutes.
