Canon EOS Rebel T1i

>> Laurie Grunin: Hi I'm Laurie Grunin Senior Editor with CNET and this is the Canon ES Rebel T1I. The T1I enters Canon's digital SLR line right above entry level. For that market you pretty much get a basic feature set with maybe 1 or 2 standout features. In this case it's the fact that the T1I includes video capture. Now while they claim it does full HD 1920X1080 that's at 20 frames per second. For 30 frames per second which is really where I suggest you stop its 1280x720. That's still better than competitors like the Nikon D5000 or even the Olympus E620 which doesn't do video at all. On the other hand those models have an articulated LCD. This one has a nice 3 inch LCD but it's fixed. This camera has a lot going for it; including very nice image quality and pretty fast performance. The AF system was pretty good at keeping up with kids and pets and you know the things that most people shoot with these. But there's few things about it that really, really kind of annoy me. The biggest one is the view finder. It's really not that good although it has the same 95% coverage as competing models. It has less magnification and it has these tiny little auto focus points which simply blink. You don't know if you're in focus. This model has the creative auto mode which trickles down from models where it really didn't belong like the Canon 50D. It's sort of a dumb down program mode that would be pretty nice for advanced beginners who are looking to experiment. Canon did change its interface a bit. Now you can change settings based off the LCD you know in the information display mode like you can on other models like Sony and Olympus. In most ways the body is identical to the XSI and is fairly solidly built for something that's made out of plastic. It doesn't have things that competitors like Sony and Pentax and Olympus have like in body image stabilization or built in wireless flash support. Canon does have the highest resolutions so far of models in this class; this one's 15 megapixels. So if resolution is important to you and speed and image quality then this is a nice buy despite this kind of lack of features. [Background music] I'm Laurie Grunin and this is the Canon ES Rebel T1I.
