Subaru has produced some of the finest rally cars ever and hot on the heels of unveiling his new WRX STI rally car for this year’s American Rally Association championship, Ken Block has had the opportunity to compare it against a 90s-era Subaru Impreza rally car.
To test out the duo, Block headed to the Dirt Fish rally school in Snoqualmie, Washington and this video is well worth watching in its entirety.

The classic Impreza featured is very similar to the WRC car that Colin McCrae famously raced, and even features the same 555 racing livery. However, this Impreza is a Group N model and isn’t quite as potent as the new WRX STI that was built for Block by Subaru America and Vermont Sports Car.
The classic Subaru has a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and is running a 32 mm air restrictor that caps power to roughly 200 horses and 200 lb-ft. This engine is mated to a five-speed dog box transmission powering all four wheels. By comparison, Block’s new rally car also features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder but has a 34 mm restrictor and currently delivers around 330 hp. It is all-wheel drive just like the old car but rather than a five-speed dog box, instead runs a six-speed sequential transmission from Sadev.
Obviously, the new car is much, much faster than the old one but that doesn’t mean the old one also isn’t heaps of fun to drive.
