From the point of its aluminum tipped nose cone to the back of the motor mount, the Darkstar Jr oozes style. And it does so without sacrificing performance. Flying on 38mm motors (or 29mm with an adapter, not included) it is a rugged rocket that can be a utility craft to fly every launch or to go supersonic and well out of sight on special occasions.
We rank this particular kit as a Skill Level 4 rocket on the Apogee Components complexity scale.
The reason this is a Skill Level 4 rocket kit is that you have to make some modifications to the fiberglass parts to get them to fit properly. You will have to make your own templates and cut some of the fiberglass parts to get them assembled correctly. There are no printed instructions in this kit!
While only 2.24 inches in diameter, the Darkstar Jr. is built of extremely rugged materials that could cause substantial damage if launched carelessly. Even without the motor, this rocket is weighs around 3 pounds (1.4 kg) and thus, despite the fiberglass construction not making it any more difficult to assemble, extra safety precausions are required when it is flown. While this looks like a relatively small rocket when built, it is not. In flight it can posess a staggering amount of kinetic energy. This is absolutely a rocket for someone who understands the requirements of high-power construction and flight safety.
In addition, while it is very precisely machined, it will require some additional machining during assembly. Many holes need to be drilled and some amount of sanding or grinding may be required for final fitment of parts (for instance, in the corners of the fin slots). And, unlike a kit with a cardboard tube and wooden fins, this kit must be assembled with epoxy. Together the fiberglass and epoxy demand that health and safety precautions be followed to prevent potential complications due to fiberglass dust in the lungs or on the skin, or developing a sensitivity to epoxy resin. A dusk mask and protective gloves are the minimum precautions recommended for construction.
There are also some parts left out of this kit that are often included in a kit like this. There are no rail buttons, parachute, or shock cord. This has the downside of requiring a separate purchase of these parts but it has the distinct advantage of allowing the builder to choose these particular parts. Let's face it, if you're ready to tackle this kit, you probably already have preferences when it comes to the launch and recovery hardware that you use.
Despite some of the challenges that this kit presents, however, finishing it is a pure dream. The surface of the nose cone, fins, and body tubes are exceptionally smooth. Moreover, since they have been ground, they have a matte texture rather than an overly glossy one and, as such, they can be primed after no more prep than wiping off any surface dust.
Printed Instructions
There are no printed instructions provided by Wildman Hobbies that are specific for this kit. There are a lot of unanswered questions you probably will have. If you've never built a fiberglass high-power rocket before, you may have questions on what techniques, tools and adhesives to use.

Q. The motor tube in this rocket is only 10 inches long. What do you do when installing motors that are longer than the length of the motor tube?
A. You don't need to do anything extra. As with any high-power rocket kit, the Darkstar Jr. does NOT contain a motor block ring. Therefore the motor will project out the forward end of the tube and into the parachute compartment. There is enough room in the parachute compartment to allow for long motors. The shock cord for the rocket is out of the way, since it is anchored to the forward centering ring on the engine mount.
While it remains a pretty simple rocket to build, that doesn't mean that there aren't a whole bunch of really nice parts in the bag. Everything is nicely machined and it's a wonderful kit to build. Anyone who has experience in building high-power rockets can enjoy building the Darkstar Jr.
Not included (You'll need to buy these items separately):
- Cloth parachute protectors 9"X9" size
- Rail Buttons
- Parachutes: 36" Main and 18" Drogue
- Shock cord - such as tubular nylon or braided Kevlar
- Engine Retainer (optional). Click here for low-cost ways to retain rocket engines in rockets.
- Building Supplies (see list of required materials under the "Tools" section elsewhere on this page)
Quality Body Tubes - The kit comes with filament-wound fiberglass tubes. The advantage of filament-wound fiberglass tubes compared to traditional "wet-layup" using wraps of woven cloth, is that it is very uniform. There is no overlap seam that you'd see on homemade tubes. The wall thickness is consistent and there are no air bubbles trapped under the surface. You'll also find the surface to be very smooth, which makes finishing and painting the rocket quite easy.
The main body tube is pre-slotted at the factory. Tabs on the base of the fins are slipped through slots in the body tube and mount directly to the engine mount tube. This makes the fins extra strong.
Like the body tubes, the nose cone is also filament wound fiberglass. The nose cone is beautifully smooth, strong, and light weight and comes with a machined aluminum tip. Filament winding is done on a mandrel and since it's not generally possible to wind all the way to the tip, the finished nose cone ends up being trucated. The aluminum, however, is a beautiful and highly bump resistent addition that can be left in its original machined state, polished, or even painted (with a cleaning, sanding, self-etching primer process). The nose cone shoulder is also filament wound and the nosecone bulkhead is made of G10 fiberglass, for high strength-to-weight ratio.
G10 Fiberglass fins - The Darkstar Jr has a splitfin design, so there are six fins in total. If the fins were not precision machined, that would be a whole lot of sanding to guarantee they were the same shape and had a smooth surface finish. As it stands, however, none of that is necessary. The fins are exceptionally uniform and require only a small amount of cleanup on the edges where there might be small glass fibers sticking out.
Filament Wound Motor Mount Tube - Like all the tubes in the kit, the motor mount tube is filament wound and comes with a precision ground surface to ensure ease of fit and accurate alignment. This rocket is designed to handle 38mm high-power size engines. This is the standard size for most H size rocket motors. You can also fit longer motors into the mount, such as a 38mm diameter J-size motor. Alternatively, you can put in a motor adapter (such as this kit ) and fly the rocket with 29mm diameter motors.
G10 Fiberglass Centering Rings - Like the fins and the nose cone bulkhead, the motor mount centering rings are machined from G10 fiberglass sheet. The kit includes four rings that - in combination with the through-the-wall fins - will result in an extremely strong fin can.
Ebay - The Darkstar Jr kit also includes all the fiberglass parts to construct a sturdy ebay including a filament wound coupler, a switch ring tube, and G10 bulkheads. The tubes are the same precision machined tubes found in the rest of the Darkstar Jr kit, while the bulkheads are center drilled for eye bolts and threaded rods. The center drilling makes it easier to drill through accurately without requiring special tools. The bulkheads also have a step on the edges that allow the bulkheads to self-center in the ebay tube.
The kit comes with nice, welded eye bolts that are used as the anchor points for the shock cord. They are strong and won't deform by the force of the shock cord pulling on them.
The Quicklinks allow you to quickly detach the parchute and the shock cord from the rocket. This makes setting it up and tearing it down after launch easy.
Other assorted parts in the kit are a set of removable rivets and some sheer pins for use on high-altitude/high-speed flights.

This file can be opened with the FREE demo version of RockSim. Both Windows and Macintosh versions are available.
What is a RockSim Design file?
The RockSim software gives you a lot of information about the flight characteristics of this rocket: how high, how fast, where it will land, how will it react to wind, etc. The "design file" is intended to save you time. All the parameters (size, shape, weight, fin design, etc.) of this rocket have already been entered into the RockSim program, and saved as an electronic database file. You can just open it up in your copy of RockSim and start loading different rocket motors to run launch simulations. It's fun and educational to see the rocket zoom skyward, even before you built it. For more information about RockSim and to download a FREE 30-day demo version, click here.

Parachute. This rocket kit does not contain a parachute, and you'll have to add one before flying. The manufacturer recommends a 36-inch diameter parachute.
- Recovery Wadding - Reusable
- Rocket Motors - See the motor selection tab.
Launch Pad & Controller - See FAQs tab for recommended choices.
- Aluminum angle for drawing lines on the body tube, or the Estes Ultimate Tube Marking Guide
- Dual-Deployment Altimeter and mounting hardware
- Safety Glasses
- Small Jeweler's files
Rotary Tool (like a Dremel) - with sanding drum to speed the scuffing of the parts prior to epoxying them together.
We created a newsletter article that explains the process. And in reality, you can make these work for any size tube. See our newsletter #519 for instructions on sizing/selection, and on how to adapt a retainer to any manufacturer's body tube.
At the top of this page, where the kit dimensions are, you'll find the location of the CP. This is the important number you should be looking at for stability. You want the CG location to be in front of the CP by about one tube-diameter. A greater distance between the CG and CP is OK. For more information on rocket stability, please click here.
We do not recommend using the same kit for both Level-1 and Level-2 certification flights. If a J-motor was just the same as a H-motor, then the NAR and Tripoli wouldn't even bother to have a Level-2 safety certification. But they realize that it is a LOT more powerful, and has potential to do significant damage if things go wrong. You are better served by building a different rocket for Level 2 than using the same one that you used for Level 1. We know that this will be more expensive, but safety is the utmost importance here.
You don't need to do anything extra, except to leave out the thrust block in the engine tube. The motor will project out the forward end of the tube and into the parachute compartment. This is OK. It works just fine. Just verify that there is room for the wadding and the parachute to be stowed in front of the rocket motor.
We offer three different controllers that can be used for mid and high-power size rockets. The Aerotech Interlock, the North Coast Rocketry LaunchMaster™, and the Pratt Hobbies GO-BOX Controller.
Since this is a big rocket that uses the rail guiding system, you'll need the Gun Turret launch pad. With its all-steel construction and tilting head, this pad was developed specifically for people that want something that makes it easy to load and launch those large rockets.
We recommend you use the RockSim software for this task. It has a easy-to-use feature called the ejection charge calculator. You tell it which tube will be pressurized, and then you define the length by adjusting the ends. It will automatically determine the amount of black powder (BP) as you make the adjustments. It will also account for the use of shear pins in the tube holding parts together. There is a FREE 30-day trial of RockSim that you can use right now to see how this is done.
