    From the Manufacturer

Panasonic has expanded its Lumix family of digital still cameras with the introduction of the Lumix DMC-FZ18, an 8.1-megapixel compact camera with an impressive 18x optical zoom. In addition to a premium 28mm wide-angle Leica D C lens, the DMC-FX18 is one of the first Panasonic digital cameras to offer the revolutionary Intelligent Auto Mode, which includes Face De tection, Intelligent Scene Selector, and Continuous Autofocus functions, allowing users t o easily capture clear, professional-quality images in any situation or setting.

When this powerful camera--which features image-stabilized optical zoom up to 18 x--is put into Intelligent Auto Mode, the multifaceted functions engage automatically, so there is no need to adjust s ettings every time conditions change. The DMC-FZ18's intuitive Intelligent Auto Mode comprises :

    • Intelligent Scene Selector, which automatically selects the appropriate scene mode from the most frequently-used modes such as Portrait, Scenery, Macro, Night Scen ery, and Night Portrait;
    • Face Detection System, which helps the camera to focus, set autoexposure, an d detects up to 15 human faces, capturing them clearly and brightly; and
    • Continuous Autofocus, which allows the camera to keep focus on the subject w ithout having to press the shutter button halfway and allowing for the best results out of a shutter chance by minimizing the autofocus time. Similar to the entire 2007 line of Lumix digital still cameras, the camera sport s advanced countermeasures against blurring--the Intelligent Image Stabilization system tha t combines MEGA Optical Image Stabilization (O.I.S.) to compensate for hand-shake and Intel ligent ISO Control to detect and adjust for motion blur caused by subject movement.

The Lumix DMC-FZ18 also is equipped with a 2.5-inch large, high-resolution LCD w ith 207,000 pixels, a 0.44-inch electric viewfinder with 188,000 pixels and f2.8 brightness, and is powered by the high-quality, high-performance Venus Engine III, which boasts shooting at IS O 1600 in normal recording mode.

The DMC-FZ18 has been redesigned to make the camera more stylish and easier to u se. The autofocus, autoexposure lock, and Macro buttons are now independent, to allow qu ick and direct operation. A metal-finished mode dial adds design strength, and an enhanc ed rubber grip makes the camera easier to hold. The redesigned body also incorporates the joyst ick made popular by the DMC-FZ8 model, which enables a host of settings, such as manual f ocusing and exposure, to be done quickly and easily.

Other advanced features of the Lumix DMC-FZ18 include:

      • Custom Setting Mode that memorizes your frequent setting patterns for in stance use applied by simply selecting this function on the mode dial.
      • 1920 x 1080 pixel photos ideal for full-screen viewing on a wide-screen HDTV .
      • Six autofocusing methods including face detection, multi, three-point high-s peed, one-point high speed, one-point normal speed, and spot. With the one-point autofocus or spot autofocus method, the autofocusing area can be chosen from as many as 11 points with the joystick or cursor button.
      • Advanced Scene Modes provide users more control over some frequently used sc ene modes, such as indoor and outdoor modes, when selecting portrait or sports mode and nature or architecture settings when selecting portrait mode.
      • Bundled SILKYPIX Developer Studio 2.0SE software application for editing and developing images in the RAW file format.
      • 27MB of built-in memory--perfect for backing up SDHC/SD memory card recordin g.
      • Extra Optical Zoom feature extends zoom power to 28.7x at 3 megapixels.
      • Compatibility with large-capacity SDHC memory cards.
      • Title Edit Function allows inputting of text and additional picture informat ion.
      • Picture Playback by category sorts images into categories such as portraits, landscapes, nightscapes, events, and motion pictures. Also, allows slideshow pla yback of images in the same category.

    In a Pinch, a Saviour!
A staff photographer with 24 years on one newspaper should know something about cameras, and I swear by the Lumix FZ and TZ line cameras. I now own the FZ18, after having worked with the FZ20, FZ30, TZ1 and TZ3. The FZ20 had too poor a video image, and I ruined the FZ30 while covering a deluge one morning, and they wanted video. Since my large HVX200 (valued at $6,000) didn't have a protective cover, I had to sacrifice the FZ30, but the dead body will be added to my collection of my cameras (Minolta SRT101, Sears 500MX, and Nikon/Kodak NC2000e digital) I have had pride working with to develop my career. This TZ18 has two negatives: one is the lack of zooming when shooting video. I rather would have a choice to zoom and then shoot than zooming after the recording starts, which makes my video more stable and professional. Yesterday, I recently came up with a way to capture footage and not concern myself over the audio, a big problem for me since the microphone is worse than most, and the cameras have never had mic inputs. But thinking whether I should delete a star, realize that this camera isn't designed to do everything superbly, but it does everything so well that the audio and zoom issues for my needs are easy work-arounds.As for being a saviour? Covering Pope Benedict's arrival in Maryland, President GW Bush walked with the Pope inside the building beyond the press riser. Yanking my SD cards from my Nikon D2HS and D2XS cameras, I prepared to knock all the gear down to transmit all the images and work on video when the pair surprisingly returned. The window to shoot was very brief between the building and where the other risers blocked the view so I turned on the FZ18 and fired off several frames. Remember: working in a press pool, there are hundreds of eyes and hundreds of collective years of talent, all trying to get everything we can to tell a complete story. I want to get everything in my position so I don't feel like I've wasted my spot. Well, let's say that the FZ18 worked well, and I will provide the shot here, as well as one of the plane, since the Lumix was the only wide camera I had. That way you can see the range this baby works.Just make sure to respect its limits. The FZ18 isn't a very good available light camera with moving objects. I like keeping it on ISO 100, its lowest setting. So, images taken in window light may require shutter speeds as low as 1/4 second or even lower!

I spent a lot of time looking for a new digital camera. Somehow I decided on this camera and it's the best decision I could have made. I have no complaints about the camera. It's easy to use, has a good solid feel, but light enough to carry around all day. The zoom is amazing. The pictures I've taken are framable. The stabalization feature makes all the difference when I'm taking pictures of the grandkids as I only have seconds to capture a shot. If you decide to buy this camera, you won't be disappointed. I had also considered a digital SLR, but didn't want to go that complicated, or that cumbersome. Great camera, good value!!

This camera actually exceeded my expections, which were quite high. The image quality is excellent. The lens is fast. The image stabilization is exceptional--I took some photos bumping along on a horse-drawn tonga on a rough road in India recently--at sunset--and they mostly came out quite clear (it was such a bumpy ride that the composition left a lot to be desired, but that's another story.) I find the controls pretty convenient and easy to use. The dioptric viewfinder and screen are both excellent. I especially appreciate the viewfinder because it lets me use the camera without my glasses. The autofocus is fast an exceptionally accurate. For someone who wants considerably more than a basic camera, but doesn't want to lug around heavy lenses, this is a superb camera. For all the focal length it packs, it is very lightweight and easy to handle. Highly recommended.

This is a great camera. It takes: great day time shots, very good shots with the flash, very nice videos, and even does well in dark situations with accent lighting (got some great shots at Mammoth Cave). It has plenty of options to let you pick what you want to be a priority during a shot. All of that, a great macro feature (man can you get in close and get wide too!), an excellent zoom with stabilization, and it's light weight too! Even my non-technical wife really likes this camera.

I've had this camera for a month, and purchased it after my Lumix FZ20 died in the cold. The FZ20 was a very good camera with a 12X zoom, so when I saw the FZ18 with 18X zoom, I purchased it. The camera is very light compared to my old one, and the using the Swiss Army camera bag I have I simple strap it to my belt for my motorcycle and bicycle rides. It's so light I don't even notice it. The zoom is what really makes this camera fun. I've reduced the image size to 5 mega pixel to increase the zoom to 23X. Doing that I'm able to shoot images of birds and other wildlife from quite a long distance away. On a recent hike I was able to shoot several images of some Red Fox pups at play from quite a long distance. I would have never been able to get close to them, so the 23X zoom is what enabled me to get the shots. I haven't played with the many different settings in the menu yet and have just been using the intelligent auto mode which works great. For the price this is a good bang for the buck. I highly recommend it.

My wife and I have used this camera for a few months. The instructions are complex, but the photos taken with the automatic point and shoot setting are excellent, so that it's a question of how sophisticated one wants to get with the settings. The 18X power is terrific. The camera comes with plenty of excellent free software. I would get a spare battery to keep charged up at all times. A 4GB card is also helpful, though we have been having trouble with the card readers and have had to use the provided USB cable to download directly from the SD card still loaded in the camera. A great camera for the price.

This is my 4th Lumix Camera. Each year a few more goodies are added. I Photograph mainly nature, birds and animals etc. This new model has not only wide angle and macro capabilities but grabs a wopping 18X with image stabilization. The Leica Lens is excellent. My previous models have been passed onto my two Daughters.Within 2 weeks my oldest Daughter had her first picture, a beautiful sunset printed in a newspaper. The wide selection of Scene choices give plenty of opportunities for experimentation.yet the camera can be used as point and shoot by a beginner. The Movie mode has been improved from previous models but still zoom is set at moment of movie start Don,t be wary of this camera because the price is lower than the highly advertised models. It is a good beginner and moderate experience camera. The reason I use this smaller size camera instead of the larger models. I Don,t like to have to carry a big bag of accessories. Amazon and its partners are an excellent site to work with.Vann,s were promt with delivery

I am having a hard time getting the colors of lanscapes to turn out nicely with this camera. Even with all the settings to switch between I cant find one to use regularly to take pictures of my backyard, they are either too dark or too bright. Either way it doesnt seem to catch the details as much as I would like. I am going to go for a Nikon next, my mom has a Nikon 4800 and it takes some great pictures.

5.0 out of 5 stars FZ18 le bon compromis entre un compact et un reflex
Reviewed in France on June 17, 2008
    Bonnes photos

I have never bought a camera for more that £120 as to be honest we could never afford to spend more. The problem with buying a cheaper camera was everytime you go to take a picture you would press the button and by the time the picture was taken the subject would have moved.
Now I love photography, I am not an expert but want to improve my skills.
Well the panasonic DMC-FZ18 is brilliant, the recovery time is so much quicker than any camera I have ever had, and the burst mode is a great feature. I still have to learn how to use this camera properly but I have taken some really amazing photos and have only had it a day.
A FANTASTIC CAMERA, I thoroughly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Handlich, leicht und vielseitig.
Reviewed in Germany on October 11, 2016
