1. Zippy menus: the 3000 had a very slow menu system that was very laggy, this has been fixed and this camera operates at modern speeds
2. Lens protector: The 3000 had no lens protection, so it was inevitably getting dirt, dust, sand and water on the lens which really messes up your pictures. This camera fixed that with a lens cover that shoots over the lens when you turn the camera off; it feels sturdy and keeps the grime out.
Overall this camera is awesome, I took it white water rafting and it held up great (i didn't submerge it but it definitely got wet and bumped around). It is a great camera for outdoor lovers who don't want to lug a huge camera around, are dissipointed with cellphone pic quality, and want to take pictures everywhere they go.
The first day I used this camera at the beach, sea water caused the lens cover shutter to fail.
As mentioned in another 1 star review:
Not Worth The Money, April 14, 2010 By Dennis Sirjuesingh
"Moving parts on any camera especially an underwater camera leave room for failure. This camera has a blade type shutter cover over the lens that slips behind the body on operation and is quite clunky. I can see this getting stuck eventually"
This is what happened to me. I put the camera in the ocean to see how a picture would look; upon taking the camera out of the water the camera was unresponsive and also the shutter failed to close completely. Additionally, the camera was making an unstoppable beeping noise.
I finally managed to turn the camera off. Then, once at home, I followed the directions to clean the camera lens and shutter. None of the manufacturers directions worked to bring this camera back to life.
Returned camera for a full refund after some slight issues with Amazon.
Based on this issue alone, ("blade type shutter cover over the lens that slips behind the body on operation . . . I can see this getting stuck eventually") I would recommend -
Do not purchase this camera !

I purchased this camera for a trip to the Caribbean. It took aceptable photos in the pool and on a couple of snorkling excursions. I've since used it on hiking trips when rain is expected and getting near waterfalls.
Videos on the other hand are pretty horrible compared my other point shoot Cannon SD780 IS. The videos are maybe acceptable to You Tube but certainly not for a larger screen. The video goes in and out of focus even in good daylight and keeping a constant distance from the objects being captured.
As for the UI, it leaves much to be desired. What can a I say, a point and shoot camera with a dedicated help [?] button says a lot. There are certainly a great number of options and modes to choose from. The auto mode never did a great job and selecting settings, but manually tuning things improves the outcome.
Pros:
Water proof enough for snorkling and pool activities
Zoom while capturing video
Close out pricing on a last years model
Cons:
Auto select mode is not nearly as good as other point and shoots
Videos quality is poor when compared to regular point and shoots
Requires camera to the battery
Clunky UI
Conclusion:
At list price there are better tough cameras or better deals to be found. At close out last year prices an adequate choice. As a point and shoot for normal conditions, look else where.
- 3 STARs if you are intending to use this in and around water, which is what I purchased the camera for
- 2 STARs if you are planning to use this a point and shoot under normal conditions
