The third book in Karin Slaughter’s acclaimed Grant County Series.
“[A] page-turner . . . Slaughter’s plot has more twists than a Slinky factory and the characters’ relationships are sharply drawn.”
—People, starred review
“Scary, shocking and perfectly suspenseful.”
—BookPage
Sara Linton, medical examiner in the small town of Heartsdale, GA, is called out to an apparent suicide on the local college campus. The mutilated body provides little in the way of clues―and the college authorities are eager to avoid a scandal―but for Sara and police chief Jeffrey Tolliver, things don’t add up.
Two more suspicious suicides follow, and a young woman is brutally attacked. For Sara, the violence strikes far too close to home. And as Jeffrey pursues the sadistic killer, he discovers that ex-police detective Lena Adams, now a security guard on campus, may be in possession of crucial information. But, bruised and angered by her expulsion from the force, Lena seems to be barely capable of protecting herself, let alone saving the next victim.

Review
“Simply one of the best thriller writers working today.” — Gillian Flynn, bestselling author of Gone Girl
“A fearless writer. One of the boldest thriller writers working today.” — Tess Gerritsen
“Her characters, plot, and pacing are unrivaled among thriller wrtiers.” — Michael Connelly
From the Back Cover
Gillian Flynn says, "Karin Slaughter is simply one of the best thriller writers working today."
An apparent student suicide has brought medical examiner Sara Linton to the local college campus, along with her ex-husband, police chief Jeffrey Tolliver. But a horribly mutilated corpse yields up few answers. And a suspicious rash of subsequent "suicides" suggests that a different kind of terror is stalking the youth of Heartsdale, Georgia—a nightmare that is coming to prey on Sara Linton's loved ones.
A small town is being transformed into a killing ground. And the key to a sadistic murderer's motive and identity may be held in the unsteady hands of a campus security guard—a former police detective driven from the force by the hellish memories that will never leave her. Lena Adams survived the unthinkable and has paid a devastating price. Now the survival of future victims may depend upon her ... when she can barely protect herself.

These stories contain what I feel are the most fully developed female characters for this type of police procedural or mystery story, at least in my personal experience. This also brings an extra layer of depth to the story since the characters have more complicated feelings and behaviors than usually found in novels, sympathetically portrayed but also pulling no punches in exposing their strengths and weaknesses. Lena Adams in particular is haunted by violence in her past, and can be self-destructive in her reactions to others in her life.
At the time of the story in this book 3 of the series, Lena Adams is not with the police force, having left under some pressure from Tolliver, and is making do as a campus security officer at the local college. When a series of deaths take place, all connected to the college and the first appearing to be a suicide but quickly followed by several others that seem to the police to surely be linked if only the connection can be found, Adams finds herself right in the middle of the violence but no longer a police officer and able to participate fully in the investigations. As a result and showing her frustration with her own personal situation, she not only does not cooperate with the police but then finds herself under consideration as one of the suspects. When Sara Linton's own sister is also attacked early in the story, the personal tensions for Sara and her parents become almost unbearable.
This is an enjoyable series that I have enjoyed very much, along with Karin Slaughter's other novels (the Will Trent series is equally excellent, along with her novel Cop Town which was the first of her novels that I read). The books in the Grant County series are:
- Blindsighted -- Grant County Thriller #1
- Kisscut -- Grant County Thriller #2
- A Faint Cold Fear -- Grant County Thriller #3
- Indelible -- Grant County Thriller #4
- Faithless -- Grant County Thriller #5
- Beyond Reach (also called Skin Privilege) -- Grant County Thriller #6
I have enjoyed reading all of these stories from Karin Slaughter and will continue to look forward to new releases from her.
MY REVIEW FOUR STARS****
This novel is the third installment in the author's GRANT COUNTY series, and unfortunately for me I am reading her books in reverse order. I have read the WILL TRENT series (with the exception of THE KEPT WOMAN), and thus have knowledge of the different character's arcs and how their various destinies intertwine and individual futures play out, etc.
I wish I had read the GRANT COUNTY books first, but hindsight is 20/20 and whine, whine, whine. Having said that, I have been pondering whether my enjoyment (and critique) of the GRANT COUNTY books is being adversely effected by the fact that the WILL TRENT series simply "knocked my socks off". Before I digress, and start writing a novella on how much I love Slaughter's work in general and Will Trent (and the fictional characters in his universe) in particular, I need to (at least try) to focus on the task at hand.
First of all, in my opinion A FAINT COLD FEAR was not exactly "gripping" right out of the gate,
and when one considers the shocking brutal attack on Sara's sister Tess during the opening pages that is saying a lot. It never occurred to me until just recently that the author created strong female leads in both of her book series that were the very antithesis of one another---Sara and Lena in the case of the GRANT COUNTY BOOKS. I enjoyed Slaughter's debut novel BLINDSIGHTED quite a bit, at least in part because of my medical background and the intriguing originality of the killer's exploitation of the drug belladonna. In KISSCUT, it was Lena's character that came across for me as the most compelling.
Ironically, then, it is again Lena that holds the reins as this reader gallops into the storyline of A FAINT COLD FEAR. The emphasis feels solidly on the character of Lena Adams for nearly the first quarter of the book. More specifically the novel implores the reader to remember the horror that Lena was forced to endure at the sadistic hands and fiendish imagination of our devious sexual predator in BLINDSIGHTED. The author forces us to see Lena's plight through the eyes of the other main characters to "bring it home" to us just how devastating this ordeal truly was for Lena.
Following the discovery of the staged suicide of our first victim and the surprising murder attempt on Sara's sister Tess, I found myself staring at a huge blank canvas with mostly just huge bloody question marks. The story fleshes out the damaged psyche of ex-Detective Adams while the plot trudges forward with a rising body count of seemingly unrelated victims. Jeffrey appears to be singing a Bob Dylan song ("Blowing In The Wind") while the cops just scratch their heads trying to make sense out of the victims, possible motives, and potential suspects. We start to feel a lot of emotions----about the tragedy of spousal abuse, the often fatal outcomes associated with battered wife syndrome, the sheer senselessness of hate crimes, intolerance toward minorities, the pervasive drug culture in our institutions of learning---well, pretty dark and abysmal stuff. But then, that is Slaughter's wheelhouse.
The violent crimes that Jeffrey and his small force are attempting to solve take a back seat to relationships in this installment of the GRANT COUNTY series.
I found the interactions between Sara and Jeffrey increasingly intriguing in this book, particularly after the couple attempting to close the distance in the novel preceding this one (KISSCUT). The realism was hard-hitting and felt genuine. Slaughter is an absolute master of the game when it comes to creating fictional characters who seem real enough to walk straight out of the pages of her narration. The other relationship is the toxic mix of Lena and Ethan, a "perfect storm". I reflected that the reiteration and explicit recall of Lena's life-altering trauma was perhaps a bridge to carry the reader to a complete comprehension of her vulnerability and falling prey to a violent racist and control freak like Ethan.
This was an intricately plotted thriller from Slaughter and I was particularly impressed with the author's skill in handling "the big reveal", and also in tying up "loose ends". The manner in which the end of the novel was deftly handled was quite satisfying for me and although I will acknowledge that this installment was perhaps the least suspenseful of the three in this series I have read thus far, I would still recommend the book without hesitation. Karin Slaughter is quite simply one of the best story tellers who is writing today.
Also, the character eventually revealed as the killer was totally improbable. I'd figured it out early, since there seemed to be no other reason for that character to be in the book, but it just didn't add up. His backstory came out all out once and was as credible as trump's saying Covid-19 was a hoax.
If you've enjoyed the first two Grant County novels, as I have, and want to continue reading the series in order, I can tell you that they do get better (I read this book out of sequence). Simply read some of the other reviews here, the ones that come off as book reports and basically rehash the entire story, and you'll know the outcome; then you can move on to The Good Daughter, which is a much better novel. Also, if you haven't read Cop Town, also by Slaughter, I highly recommend that book. It's outstanding (and not part of the Grant County series). This one, not so much.
