A Cut Above

More Than a Foot of Rita Ora's Hair Just Suddenly Disappeared

Rita Ora let the intrusive thoughts win. If you've ever had long hair — like, very long hair — you know the temptation that sneaks up on you to just suddenly cut it all off even though you (perhaps from experience) know that you'll regret it. It seems Ora has given in to the impulse, but from the looks of her chic new bob, she has absolutely nothing to regret.

Ora has been wearing her hair super-long for quite some time now, showing up on red carpets for the last couple of years with mermaid-esque, waist-length waves. She stuck to the look so long for good reason: it's gorgeous. But “if it ain't broke, don't fix it” doesn't always ease the itch to make a big chop.

On Thursday, February 15, the British singer was spotted around New York City looking almost unrecognizable in a voluminous yet sleek new bob. In just a matter of hours, she was seen wearing it both flipped out — the flippy bob is the cut of the moment, after all — and with the ends a bit straighter. In both instances, the top has been stealthily teased for impressive height.

“Rita wanted a drastic change, so we decided to chop her long waves into an edgy, sophisticated, chin-length bob," says stylist Dimitris Giannetos, who tells Allure that he cut off 20 inches of Ora's hair to achieve what he's calling an Italian bob, inspired by both Sophia Loren and East London grunge. And to achieve that oomph on her straightened new style, he used Moroccanoil Dry Texture Spray.

But the cut isn't the only big transformation. Her hair color is now darker and richer — a perfect way to add dimension to the new shape. “We moved from the blonde era to a rich hazelnut brown,” Giannetos tells Allure, adding that he used L'Oréal Paris Le Color Gloss in Smoky Bronde.

It can be scary making a big chop like Ora's, but if you're hesitating, just remember the wise words she posted when she shared her new look on Instagram: “Sometimes you gotta cut out the things in life that don’t serve you.”
