Tropical anguillid eels account for two-thirds of the 19 species in Anguilla Schrank, 1798. However, information on the species diversity, geographical distribution, and life histories of the tropical eels is very limited. Recent studies suggested that morphological species identification of the tropical anguillid eels should be validated by molecular analysis for accurate identification. After surveying for three years, two anguillid eels were found in Brunei Darussalam, Borneo Island. They were firstly identified as Anguilla marmorata Quoy & Gaimard, 1824 using morphological analysis and further gene analysis of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) confirmed the species identification. This study is the first comprehensive description of A. marmorata in Brunei Darussalam, Borneo Island. Furthermore, it is also the first study to validate two anguillid eels collected from the tropical Bonin Islands of Japan as A. marmorata by means of morphological and COI analyses. The molecular p...

Life history traits of the Barred spiny eel Macrognathus pancalus (Hamilton, 1822) in a wetland ecosystemMacrognathus siangensis, new species, from the Siang River, Brahmaputra drainage, northeast India, is distinguished from all other congeners by the following combination of characters: lack of rostral tooth plates, dorsal-fin spines 15-19, dark spots like imperfect ocelli along the base of dorsal soft branched fin rays 7-11, dark blotches at the mid-lateral sides of body 22-27, dorsal fin rays with two rows of parallel greyish streaks, caudal fin rays with 4-6 striated greyish streaks and body width 59.0-67.4% of its depth. A key to Macrognathus species of northeast India including the newly described one is provided.

Biosystematics and distributional status of spiny eel fish species of the genus Macrognathus Lacepede, (Synbranchiformes: Mastacembelidae) from Northeastern region of India2018 •
Extensive surveys of entire northeastern India conducted during the last five years indicated the abundance and distributional status of four species of the genus Macrognathus. The evaluation of morphometric, meristic and osteological traits in 185specimens of different size groups resolved the taxonomic status of three distinct species Macrognathus aral, Macrognathus pancalus and Macrognathus aculeatus. However, identification of fourth species Macrognathus morehensis is based on only one specimen collected from Manipur. The abundance and distributional analysis revealed that M. aral is the most common species commercially important and uniformly distributed in all states except Manipur and Mizoram. Whereas, the other two species seem to be confined to fewer states as per the material examined (M. pancalus: Sikkim, Assam and Tripura; M. aculeatus: Meghalaya, Assam and Tripura).
