Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ1

The LZ1 is not a bad buy, though speed and flash performance could be better.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ1 Zoomed

We like the LZ1's 6X optical zoom, which is above average among compact digital cameras. The f/2.8 to f/5.6, 6.1- to 36.6-mm (37- to 222-mm, 35-mm equivalent) lens may limit you at the telephoto end, especially in low-light situations.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ1 Front

The 4-megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ1 offers some interesting features in a lightweight, relatively compact body.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ1 Back

In addition to a live histogram, the LZ1 offers a display mode that shows a nine-rectangle grid illustrating the "rule of thirds," which will help you balance your compositions and keep your horizons level.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ1 Left

DC in and mini USB ports are located on the left side, underneath a sturdy panel.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ1 Right

We also like the 14MB of on-board memory, which might give you space for a few extra pictures when you fill up your SD memory card, which is located on the right of the camera, behind a (not-spring-loaded) door.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ1 Top

You'll find the shooting mode-selector wheel, shutter button, zoom control, on/off switch, and a button controlling the optical image stabilization feature on the top of the LZ1.
