DCI Vera Stanhope is about to solve her final mystery.
The British crime drama Vera, which airs across the pond on ITV (and streams Stateside via BritBox and Roku Channel), will come to an end with its upcoming 14th season, ITV announced Monday.
Season 14 will consist of only two episodes, but they will each span two hours.
“Working on Vera has been a joy from beginning to end and I’m sad to be saying Cheerio. But I am so proud of our achievements over the last 14 years,” said series star Brenda Blethyn, who has played the show’s title character since its inception. “I’ll be forever grateful to the wonderful Ann Cleeves who created Vera, and to Elaine Collins who saw fit to cast me in the role. The producers, dream cast and crew have been fabulous and I’m going to miss them, but I won’t forget their huge talent, the camaraderie, laughter or kindness we shared nor the friendship of the people of the North East and our fans worldwide. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
Added executive producer Kate Bartlett: “It is the end of an era and has been an extraordinary journey over 14 amazing series of Vera. So many wonderful and talented people have been involved in the making of Vera across all the series, but none of us would be here without two incredible women: Firstly, the absolutely extraordinary talent of the inimitable Brenda Blethyn. She is brilliant as DCI Vera Stanhope, a truly iconic character of our times. And — of course — the amazing Ann Cleeves, author of the original novels and creator of DCI Vera Stanhope. We will all be very sad to say goodbye to Brenda and everyone involved in making the show.”
Based on Cleeves’ series of Vera Stanhope novels, Vera premiered on ITV in May 2011 and has starred Blethyn as the titular detective chief inspector as she and her team face a series of murder mysteries. Over the years, Vera alumni have included Wunmi Mosaku (Loki), Cush Jumbo (The Good Fight) and Kingsley Ben-Adir (Secret Invasion).
Production on Vera‘s final season will get underway this summer. Will you miss the show?
Will definitely miss her!
I will miss it forever. I loved all the characters I couldn’t wait for every single moment but I understand that everything does come to an end. Good luck to everybody in your endeavors. Take care.
Really enjoyed the show, going to miss Kenny….
I will miss Kenny too, he is my favorite after Vera herself.
Every now & then, a TV show comes along and you eagerly await the next episode … the next series. Brenda brought Vera to life consummately.
I hope the show ends on a positive note – Vera deserves it and so do her fans!
I’ve enjoyed this show so much. Darker then Midsomer, but always entertaining.
I will definitely miss this amazing series. Brenda Blethyn is absolutely fantastic as DCI Vera Stanhope. The cast is stellar and the writing is well done. I’m hoping they will give closure to Vera and the other characters.
Oh I’ll definitely miss it here in the UK.
I really love this series and will miss it. All good things must come to an end so I respect their decision.
Ooh I will miss it so much pet. I will have to rewatch from the beginning love
I know right. I always find myself calling people pet or luv after watching a series.😃
I LOVE THIS SHOW! I am actually sad to hear this news but, it’s understandable as Brenda is 78. I really hope Joe is back for the last two episodes, as I love their chemistry together. Shows like this are few and far between.
Yes, I will miss Vera. What a great show!
I figured this was coming but still hate to see it happen. I haven’t missed an episode of Vera and I wish Brenda Blethyn the very best. She and the rest of the cast have provided me with so much pleasure. I thank David Leon for returning as we wouldn’t have had this previous series or the upcoming final
series. One of the best series I’ve encountered and I’ll enjoy it for years to come. Thank you sincerely to everyone involved, as well as Ann Cleeves who created the character in her books. Vera will be truly missed.
I will miss Vera a lot. Wish it could go on forever. I consider it the best show on American & English tv!
I have been finding myself watching almost as many European shows as American shows in the last few years, many of them better than our shows in the US and some direct ripoffs (Ghosts). Vera is one of these shows. This is a very entertaining show with many season’s under it’s belt. While I will miss it, I guess it’s time, nobody want’s to work forever. Many thanks to the crew, producers, and especially to Brenda Blethyn for the years of great entertainment. May your next project be as great as this one was!
I’ll take a UK, Aussie, Kiwi or Canadian show any day over MOST American shows with a few exceptions that are on specialty channels. There’s a reason why it takes 5 weeks to film an episode of Vera whereas most US network episodes can be done in 8 days.
Listen pet, while I know all things must come to and end, I will really miss Vera. Ann Cleeves books are stellar, and Brenda Blethyn has brought Vera to life is such an amazing way.
Gosh yes! I’ll miss it, it’s a brilliant show. But what a wonderful run!
I’ll definitely miss Vera. We will always have the books but they are so different than the show but at least that’s something. Best of luck to the cast!
So sorry that this show is coming to an end. I will miss the wonderful Brenda Blethyn and her quirky, clever, character. I’ll miss the writing, and so many actors who have contributed their talents.
Darn.
Im gonna miss it, its one of my favs, with shetland
Intelligent interesting addictive TV, Vera was the best.
Blyth was exceptional, and had comic timing.
Too bad there isn’t a followup series with other main characters.
Sorry it has to end. Have so looked forward to each episode. It will be missed, you dont often get great actors, great acting and great writing together.
I guess all good things do, sometimes come to an end. This certainly is one of them, I’m in the U.S, and love British T.V. The shows are so much better across the pond. Britbox and Acorn, can’t do without them. Long live Vera.
Vera is one of our most favorite series. We here on Arizona will miss her. Thank you, Pet!
Missed this announcement last week! Such a wonderful show. I usually don’t care for “dark” murder mysteries, but Brenda Blethyn’s talent for adding humorous asides lightens the intensity. She is an extraordinary actor and I will miss this show very much.
Oh no !!!! All the truly good shows are ending for lotal fans!!!!😢😢
