Holland native Marloes Horst was featured in the 2014 SI Swimsuit Issue. She had already been modeling for eight years by the time she stepped onto the beaches of Madagascar for her photoshoot alongside photographer Derek Kettela. Though she had many years of experience, the 34-year-old shared that she had never intended to be a model in the first place.

“I never planned on being a model,” she explained on the set of the African island. “My best friend... wanted to send some pictures out, so we did it together, and ages later, I’m here.”

But by the time she made it to the pages of the SI Swimsuit Issue, she was seasoned and excited for the opportunity. “I’ve been waiting for this moment for so long, and we’re doing it in such a beautiful place,” she said. “I’m so excited.”

The beautiful spot was well-worth the trip for both the rookie and photographer Kettela, whose snapshots really incorporated the scenic background—including both natural and man-made elements. For Horst, the best prop was the antique boat that she posed aboard in several of the snaps.

“It was this really old boat with beautiful sails and the colors looked amazing with all the suits that we had,” she remarked. “It’s always nice to work with a prop because you [are wearing] swimsuits and there’s not much to it.”

The Dutch model made her mark on the tropical beaches “surrounded by nature,” fulfilling her desire “to be one with nature,” in the final photos. Below are eight of the most naturally beautiful photos of Horst in Madagascar.
