You don't need a time machine to go back to the late 1980s, a period when the United Socialist Soviet Republic, or U.S.S.R., existed prior to its eventual fall.

Simply head on over to University of Malaya's website and apply for a job. In the online job application form, under place of birth, you'll find Ukraine listed as Ukrainian SSR.

SSR stands for Soviet Socialist Republic.

Made out of 15 Soviet Socialist Republics; Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Ukraine, the U.S.S.R. fell on the Christmas day of 1991.

Since then, U.S.S.R. became known as Russia, and all of the republics separated and are today considered as independent nations.

21 years on, the narrative still remains the same albeit with a tiny but significant update: Russia invaded Ukraine.

Depending on who you ask, Ukraine is either under Russian influence or it's an independent nation fighting for its survival. University of Malaya, however, appears to be in the former camp.

Reddit user u/Luqmandollah, recently screenshotted the error made by the prestigious Malaysian university.

"Was applying for a job on the University of Malaya portal the other day and saw that they have the Ukrainian SSR as one of the countries of origin. For those who don't know, this was the name of Ukraine during the Soviet era. Either I time travelled or UM hasn't updated system since the 60's lol," the Reddit user posted.

That's not all. According to some comments in the thread, the university's website and syllabus require a huge upgrade.

"Looking at the design of the website, it looks like it hasn't been updated and maintained. Are you sure this is the right website? They might not even receive your application," one user commented, to which u/Luqmandollah confirmed the screenshot was from University of Malaya.

Was it a blatant error or an intentional decision made by the university? Your guess is as good as ours.
